Devices connected through that router can use the VPN without each needing its own app. The right choice depends on your exact router model and firmware, your VPN provider’s supported setup, device-routing controls, and your home’s Wi-Fi needs.
What “whole house VPN” means
A whole-home VPN setup usually means the router connects as a client to a remote server operated by a commercial VPN provider. Devices that use the router’s network then send their internet traffic through that connection. TP-Link describes this setup as connecting the router and its network devices to a remote VPN server, while ASUS says its router VPN feature can provide VPN access to devices on a home network. TP-Link’s VPN setup guide and ASUS’s setup guide explain their respective configurations.

VPN client versus VPN server
These terms describe opposite directions of connection. A VPN client on the router connects outward to a provider’s remote VPN server, which is the setup most people mean when they want household traffic routed through a commercial VPN. A VPN server on the router lets a person away from home connect back to the home network. NETGEAR’s Orbi manual makes the distinction explicit: its described OpenVPN feature does not make the router a client to an external VPN provider and does not encrypt traffic between the home network and the internet. Router options: what the available evidence establishes
The options below are different ways to approach a router-based VPN. The available sources do not establish comparable VPN throughput, current prices, retailer availability, or kill-switch behavior, so those are not ranked here.
#1 Best Overall

| Option | What it does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Use a router you already own | Can route household traffic through a provider if the exact router model and firmware support VPN client mode. | Check the product manual and the provider’s required protocol and configuration. “VPN support” may refer only to server mode. |
| Buy a router with VPN client support | Provides a router-based client connection without installing VPN software on each device. | Confirm the exact model and hardware revision, provider compatibility, supported device routing, Wi-Fi coverage, and performance under VPN load. |
| Use a preconfigured router option | May reduce manual setup if it is configured for the chosen VPN provider. | Confirm the configuration, supported protocol, credentials, model, firmware, and current availability before relying on it. |
A specific model to investigate: GL.iNet Flint 3
RTINGS’ comparison, updated September 28, 2026, lists the GL.iNet Flint 3 (GL-BE9300) as supporting WireGuard and OpenVPN in both VPN client and server modes. That makes it a concrete candidate to investigate, not a universal recommendation. The comparison does not establish a comparable VPN-speed measurement for this model. Check the exact hardware revision, current firmware, your provider’s configuration requirements, your household’s speed needs, and whether its wireless coverage suits your home. Check compatibility before you buy or configure
Router VPN support varies by model and firmware. Confirm the details with both the router maker and your VPN provider before making a purchase or changing settings.

- 【AC1200 Dual-band Wireless Router】Simultaneous dual-band with wireless speed up to 300 Mbps (2.4GHz) + 867 Mbps (5GHz). 2.4GHz band can handles some simple tasks like emails or web browsing while bandwidth intensive tasks such as gaming or 4K video streaming can be handled by the 5GHz band.*Speed tests are conducted on a local network. Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
- 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
- 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.
- 【Full Gigabit Ports】Gigabit Wireless Internet Router with 2 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 Gigabit WAN ports, ideal for lots of internet plan and allow you to connect your wired devices directly.
- 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
- Exact router model and revision: Use the product manual for the specific hardware, not just a brand’s general VPN page.
- VPN client mode: Verify that the feature connects to a remote provider. Server mode alone is for remote access back to your home network.
- Protocol and configuration: Ask the VPN provider which protocols and setup details it supports for routers. ASUS specifically advises confirming the VPN connection type with the provider. ASUS router VPN setup
- Firmware: Check whether the needed client feature is supported in the firmware version for your exact model, and keep the router updated.
- Device routing: Determine whether the router sends all connected devices through the VPN or lets you select which ones use it.
- Coverage and capacity: Assess Wi-Fi coverage and household internet-speed requirements separately from VPN compatibility. A VPN connection does not extend wireless coverage.
Choose between routing every device and selected devices
Some routers apply the VPN client connection to all devices; some models also offer device-by-device routing. ASUS describes VPN Fusion as a way to assign selected devices to the VPN while others remain on the normal WAN connection, but notes that the feature is available only on certain models. When it is unavailable, routing behavior may be different, so check the exact model’s documentation before setup. ASUS router VPN setup
Selective routing can be useful when some devices should use the VPN and others should connect normally. If you want the whole network to use one VPN connection, verify that the router’s default behavior matches that goal and understand what happens if the tunnel disconnects. The sources here do not establish comparable kill-switch performance across routers.

Set up the router with your provider’s details
The exact menus and steps vary by manufacturer and model. TP-Link separates VPN server features from client connections and directs users to the manual for the specific product; ASUS likewise advises confirming the connection type with the provider. NordVPN’s router guidance describes using provider configuration files and credentials where required. TP-Link setup guidance · ASUS setup guidance · NordVPN router guidance
- Check the router manual. Confirm that the exact model and firmware support a VPN client connection, not only a VPN server.
- Confirm the provider setup. Get the supported protocol and any required configuration file, server details, or credentials from the provider.
- Configure the client using the router’s documented interface. Follow the steps for your model; do not assume menu labels or capabilities are the same across router families.
- Choose device routing. If the model supports selective routing, assign the devices that should use the VPN. Otherwise, confirm which devices use the client connection by default.
- Verify the connection and recovery behavior. Check that the router reports a connection and test the intended devices. Learn how to disable or reconnect the client if the tunnel fails.
Keep Wi-Fi coverage and router security in scope
A router can send traffic through a VPN and still fail to provide adequate wireless coverage in every room. Compare the router’s coverage with your home layout and decide whether separate mesh access points are needed. The Orbi manual’s mesh coverage context does not change the distinction between remote-access server mode and a commercial VPN client connection. NETGEAR Orbi manuals
