The reliable way to secure an Apache site on Debian is to install Certbot with its Apache integration, obtain a certificate for every public hostname, let Certbot update the HTTPS virtual host, and schedule renewal before the certificate expires. The standard HTTP-01 validation requires that the hostname resolve to this server and that inbound TCP port 80 reach Apache, even when all normal visitors are redirected to HTTPS.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This guide covers preparation, issuance, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects, renewal, DNS-01 fallback, and the failure modes that most often stop validation.

Certbot runs on the Debian server and normally needs administrative privileges. Prepare these items before requesting a certificate:
- A supported Debian server with Apache installed and running.
- Administrative access, either as
rootor through an account that can usesudo. - A registered domain whose public DNS records point to this server. Check every hostname you intend to secure, including both the apex name and
wwwif you will use them. - Firewall and network rules that permit the selected ACME challenge. HTTP-01 requires inbound TCP port 80; HTTPS service normally also requires TCP port 443.
- An Apache virtual host with the correct
ServerNameandServerAliasvalues.
Check both A records (IPv4) and AAAA records (IPv6). If an AAAA record exists but IPv6 traffic does not reach this Apache server, the certificate authority can connect to the wrong place or time out even though IPv4 appears correct. Correct or remove an unusable record before starting Certbot.

Install Certbot and the Apache plugin
Refresh Debian’s package metadata and install Certbot together with the package that integrates it with Apache:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install certbot python3-certbot-apache
The python3-certbot-apache package supplies the Apache authenticator and installer. Exact package versions, enabled Apache modules, and the scheduler supplied by the operating system differ between Debian releases, so check the installed system rather than assuming a particular version.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Before requesting a certificate, make sure Apache’s existing configuration is valid. A syntax error or an inactive site can prevent the plugin from identifying the right virtual host. Resolve configuration errors first, then confirm that the intended site answers on port 80 for each requested name.
Request and install the certificate with Apache integration
For a site served at both the bare domain and its www name, run:
sudo certbot --apache -d example.com -d www.example.com
Replace the names with the real hostnames. Include every name that users will visit; a certificate for example.com does not automatically cover www.example.com, and a certificate for one subdomain does not cover its siblings.
What the Apache plugin does
Certbot’s --apache plugin performs the ACME authorization and can edit Apache’s configuration to enable the certificate. It discovers matching virtual hosts, obtains the certificate, and proposes HTTPS configuration. Review the hostnames and the proposed virtual host before accepting changes. If Apache contains several sites, selecting the wrong host can leave the intended domain unsecured or attach the certificate to another site.

Choose the redirect behavior
During the interactive run, Certbot offers to redirect HTTP requests to HTTPS. Select that option for a normal public website, or use the documented redirect behavior when invoking Certbot non-interactively. The resulting port-80 virtual host sends ordinary requests to the corresponding HTTPS URL while still allowing the ACME challenge path to be served.
After Certbot changes Apache, verify the configuration and reload Apache if your package workflow requires it. Test both hostnames in a browser or with an HTTP client: an HTTP URL should return a redirect to the same path on HTTPS, and the HTTPS response should present a certificate whose names include the requested host.
Why port 80 must remain reachable
HTTP-01 validation places a token under /.well-known/acme-challenge/ and asks the certificate authority to retrieve it over plain HTTP. The HTTP-01 challenge can only be completed on port 80. A redirect from port 80 to HTTPS is compatible with validation, but blocking port 80 or forwarding it to an unrelated service is not.
For general web servers, Let’s Encrypt recommends offering both HTTP on port 80 and HTTPS on port 443. Keeping port 80 available also gives users who type an old HTTP link a predictable upgrade path instead of a connection failure. Ensure that cloud security groups, host firewalls, NAT rules, reverse proxies, and container port mappings all permit the request to reach the Apache instance that serves the challenge.

Match every requested name
The names supplied with -d must correspond to Apache’s ServerName or ServerAlias. If a domain is handled by a different virtual host, Certbot may modify the wrong site or the challenge may be answered by the wrong document root. Add the intended aliases, enable the correct site, and rerun Certbot with all required -d arguments.
Keep the challenge location accessible
Do not add authentication, IP allow-lists, application rewrites, or a blanket deny rule that blocks /.well-known/acme-challenge/. A front-end proxy or content-delivery layer must pass that path through to the server, or serve the exact token generated by Certbot. If your application rewrites every request to a login page, create an exception for the challenge directory.

Renewal is part of the installation
Let’s Encrypt certificates currently have a default lifetime of 90 days. Issuing one certificate is therefore not a one-time task. Certbot is designed to retain the original certificate lineage and options, then renew only certificates that are close enough to expiry.
Use the recurring renewal command
The standard command is:
sudo certbot renew
Run it from the scheduler configured by your Debian installation, commonly a systemd timer or cron entry. The exact scheduler and timer name vary by release, so inspect the target host’s scheduled units or cron configuration rather than assuming one implementation. A successful run may report that no certificate was due; that is normal and means Certbot checked the lineage without issuing a replacement.
Test renewal safely
Use a dry run during an approved maintenance window:
sudo certbot renew --dry-run
A dry run exercises the renewal workflow against the ACME test service instead of replacing the production certificate. It is the quickest way to detect an expired DNS record, a blocked challenge path, a removed virtual host, or a scheduler and hook problem before the real expiry date. Review Certbot’s log if the dry run fails, then correct the underlying routing or Apache configuration and repeat the dry run.
Reload Apache after renewal when necessary
Certbot normally preserves the lineage’s original options and can invoke configured hooks. If your deployment uses a proxy, a container, or another process that must reload the new files, configure an appropriate Certbot renewal hook rather than editing files under /etc/letsencrypt manually. Verify that the service presenting TLS actually reloads the renewed certificate.
HTTP-01 versus webroot and DNS-01
Choose the validation method according to who controls Apache, the availability of port 80, and whether a wildcard certificate is required.

| Approach | Best fit | Challenge reachability | Wildcard support | Apache changes | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
certbot --apache with HTTP-01 |
Standard single-host Apache site | Public TCP port 80 must reach the correct Apache virtual host | No | Certbot can authenticate and install the certificate automatically | Simplest workflow, but dependent on direct HTTP reachability and correct virtual-host discovery |
certbot certonly --webroot |
Apache must stay running while configuration changes are managed manually | Certbot writes a token into an existing webroot that must be publicly served on port 80 | No | Does not install the certificate into Apache | Separates issuance from deployment, so you must configure and reload Apache yourself |
| DNS-01 | Wildcard certificates or environments where port 80 cannot be exposed | Certbot creates a DNS TXT record; the DNS provider must allow reliable automation | Yes | Certificate installation remains a separate Apache task unless another integration handles it | More DNS automation and stronger control of the DNS account are required |
For most ordinary Debian Apache sites, HTTP-01 with --apache is the shortest path. Use webroot when another system owns Apache’s configuration but you can dedicate a document root for the token. Use DNS-01 when port 80 is impossible to expose or when the certificate must cover a wildcard such as *.example.com.
When port 80 is unavailable: DNS-01
DNS-01 proves control by publishing a time-limited TXT record under the domain’s ACME location. It does not depend on an inbound web connection and supports wildcard names. The operational cost is higher: Certbot needs an API integration or a carefully managed process that can create and remove TXT records, and DNS propagation must complete before validation.
Limit the DNS API credentials to the zone and actions they need. Store them with permissions that prevent ordinary users from reading them, and account for propagation delays when troubleshooting. Once DNS-01 has issued the certificate, configure Apache to use the resulting files and ensure the renewal process can repeat the TXT-record operation automatically.
Troubleshooting common failures
Authorization failure or timeout
- Confirm that each A and AAAA record resolves publicly to the server that should answer the challenge.
- Check cloud firewalls, host firewalls, NAT, reverse proxies, and security groups for inbound TCP port 80.
- Request
http://your-host/.well-known/acme-challenge/testfrom an external network and verify that the request reaches the expected virtual host rather than an application login page or another server. - Remove rewrite, authentication, or access-control rules that intercept the challenge directory.
A redirect is acceptable, but the redirect chain must ultimately leave the challenge token readable. A timeout generally indicates routing or firewall reachability; an authorization error often indicates the wrong virtual host, wrong document root, or a response that changed the token.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The certificate contains the wrong hostname
Inspect Apache’s ServerName and ServerAlias declarations and compare them with every -d option. If a hostname was omitted, rerun Certbot with the complete set. If DNS sends one name to a different server, fix DNS first; requesting the certificate again cannot correct a routing mistake.
Redirect loops
A loop usually means that more than one layer is enforcing HTTPS or that a proxy is not forwarding the original protocol in its headers. Decide whether the edge proxy or Apache owns the redirect, then disable the duplicate rule. Ensure the proxy communicates the client’s HTTPS state correctly so Apache does not redirect an already secure request back to the proxy.
Best Value
Renewal fails after a configuration change
Start with sudo certbot renew --dry-run and read the Certbot log for the failing lineage. Check that the original challenge path still exists, the DNS records still point to this host, the port-80 listener is present, and the scheduler still runs with sufficient privileges. A site migration, removed alias, new proxy rule, or expired DNS API credential can break renewal even when the first issuance succeeded.
Repeated attempts trigger a rate limit
Do not repeatedly place production orders while debugging. Use the ACME staging endpoint while iterating and switch to production only after DNS, routing, and virtual-host behavior are stable. Let’s Encrypt documents a limit of 50 certificates per registered domain in a seven-day period; renewals recognized through its Automatic Renewal Information mechanism are exempt from that limit. Failed authorizations and other limits also apply, so preserve successful configurations instead of deleting and recreating certificates unnecessarily.
Operational security after issuance
Protect the private key
Keep the private keys and account material under the permissions managed by Certbot. Do not copy private keys into a web-accessible directory, commit them to source control, or make them readable by untrusted service accounts. Use Apache’s site configuration and Certbot hooks for custom behavior instead of editing files inside /etc/letsencrypt directly; Certbot may replace managed files during renewal.
Enable HSTS only when every dependency is ready
Certbot’s --hsts option can add the Strict-Transport-Security response header. Enable HSTS only after HTTPS works for every hostname users will access and all required subresources, APIs, redirects, and administrative endpoints function over HTTPS. A browser that has accepted HSTS will refuse ordinary HTTP connections, so an incomplete migration can make recovery harder.
Watch expiry and deployment health
Automated renewal is necessary but not sufficient. Monitor the scheduler, alert on dry-run or hook failures, and check the certificate presented by the public endpoint after renewals. This catches cases where Certbot renewed the files successfully but a proxy, load balancer, or long-running Apache process continued serving the old certificate.
Quick Recap
A repeatable Debian workflow
- Verify Apache is running, the intended virtual host is enabled, and DNS A/AAAA records resolve to the server.
- Allow inbound TCP ports 80 and 443 through every firewall and forwarding layer that handles the site.
- Install
certbotandpython3-certbot-apachewithsudo apt update && sudo apt install certbot python3-certbot-apache. - Request all required names with
sudo certbot --apache -d example.com -d www.example.com, review the proposed host, and choose the HTTPS redirect. - Test an HTTP URL for a redirect and an HTTPS URL for a valid certificate and working application response.
- Confirm the Debian scheduler is present, then run
sudo certbot renew --dry-runbefore relying on unattended renewal. - Keep port 80 available for HTTP-01, or migrate deliberately to DNS-01 if the network design or wildcard requirement demands it.
