A Minecraft bundle is crafted with one String placed directly above one Leather in a crafting grid. It compresses different item types into one inventory slot, with room equivalent to one normal stack—usually 64 items in total. In Java Edition, left-click adds an item, right-click removes the selected item type, and the mouse wheel changes which visible type is selected. Holding a filled bundle and right-clicking empties its contents onto the ground.

Bedrock Edition supports the same general storage idea, but the documented selection controls vary by input: mouse wheel, a controller’s right stick, or tapping on a touch device. The practical differences matter when you are switching editions, playing on a console or phone, or troubleshooting why an interaction is not behaving like a Java tutorial.

What a Minecraft bundle does
A bundle is a portable container for combining unlike items in one inventory slot. Instead of carrying several partially filled slots containing seeds, flowers, drops, blocks and other small piles, you can place those item types together in the bundle. Mojang describes it as an item that “can pack different items together into the same stack.”
The important distinction is that a bundle saves inventory slots; it does not create extra item capacity. Its contents still occupy the space of one ordinary stack overall. A bundle filled with several item types is therefore useful for tidying scattered leftovers, but it cannot replace a chest, shulker-style storage or a large collection of full stacks.

When a bundle is most useful
- Early exploration: caves, villages and surface trips often produce many small piles that would otherwise consume separate slots.
- Building-material cleanup: spare flowers, dyes, seeds, buttons and other low-quantity materials can travel together while you keep your main slots free.
- Loot collection: a bundle lets you pick up miscellaneous drops without immediately returning to storage.
- Inventory preparation: grouping several partial stacks before a mining or crafting trip makes the remaining slots easier to read.
A bundle is not a second inventory. Treat it as a way to consolidate a mixed collection that would be awkward to carry separately.
How to craft a bundle
The current Java recipe is deliberately simple:

In a 3×3 crafting table, place one String in any column and put one Leather in the square immediately beneath it. The same vertical arrangement works in the 2×2 personal crafting grid. The recipe is therefore one String above one Leather, not a horizontal pair and not four ingredients.

- Open your inventory’s 2×2 crafting grid, or use a crafting table for its 3×3 grid.
- Put one String in a square.
- Put one Leather directly below that String.
- Take the bundle from the result slot.
The ingredients can be moved to another column if the vertical relationship is preserved. If the result does not appear, check that you used String rather than another wool-related item and that the Leather is immediately underneath it.
Why older tutorials show rabbit hide
Early bundle prototypes used rabbit hide in the recipe. Mojang’s snapshot notes explain that the recipe was changed so the item would be easier to obtain early in a world. Current instructions for the Java recipe use Leather; a tutorial based on the prototype is describing an earlier snapshot, not the present recipe described in the Java Edition 1.21.2 release notes.
Capacity: one stack shared by many item types
A bundle fits one stack in total, usually 64 items. “One stack” refers to the bundle’s combined capacity, not 64 of every item inside it. The 64 positions can be distributed among different item types, allowing one slot to contain a mixture that could not normally occupy a single stack.
How mixed packing helps
Imagine an exploration trip leaves you with a few seeds, several flowers, a small number of mob drops and some spare building blocks. Normally, each item type would claim its own inventory slot. Putting those partial piles into a bundle consolidates them into the bundle slot while preserving their identities. When you later remove an item, it comes out as its own type rather than being turned into a generic pile.
This is most valuable when your inventory contains many incomplete stacks. It has less value for a row of full stacks of the same block, because those stacks already use inventory space efficiently.
What the capacity does not mean
- The bundle does not increase the total number of items you can carry by an unlimited amount.
- It does not turn one inventory slot into a chest-sized container.
- Its mixed contents still count toward the bundle’s single-stack limit.
- Items remain separate types inside the bundle, so you must select and remove the type you want.
Use bundles to consolidate variety, not to store a large quantity of one material. For a long mining run, ordinary full stacks and larger storage options remain more appropriate.
Using a bundle in Java Edition
Java Edition exposes the bundle’s interactions through the mouse and the item tooltip. The exact action depends on whether the bundle is in your inventory or already in your hand.

Putting items in
With the bundle available in your inventory, use left-click to place an item into it. Continue adding different types until the shared capacity is reached. Because the capacity is shared, a nearly full bundle may accept only a small amount—or none—of another item.

Keep an eye on the bundle’s tooltip as you work. If an item will not go in, the bundle may be full, or the game may be waiting for the correct inventory interaction rather than a world-use action.
Taking items out
Right-click removes the first or top item type selected by the bundle interface. This is different from opening a chest: there is no conventional row of slots to click. If the type you need is not the one selected, keep the tooltip visible and scroll the mouse wheel until that type is selected, then right-click.
The selected item is visually indicated by poking out of the bundle icon. That cue is useful when several types are packed together and prevents you from repeatedly removing the wrong material.
Reading the tooltip
When fewer than 12 item types are inside, the tooltip displays all of them. At 12 or more types, the tooltip shows the top three rows and hides additional entries below. Scrolling changes the selected visible type; it does not make the hidden entries appear as a complete list. If you cannot find a particular item in the visible portion, remove or reorganize some contents until it becomes accessible.

Emptying a bundle onto the ground
When you are holding the bundle in your hand, right-clicking—or holding right-click—dumps its items into the world. This is a fast way to clear the container, but it is also the easiest way to drop valuable materials accidentally. Before using the dump action, stand where dropped items cannot fall into lava, fire, a cactus or an inaccessible cave opening. If you only need one type, use the inventory interaction and remove it selectively instead.
Bedrock Edition: controls and availability
Bedrock has the same core concept of a mixed-content bundle, but the documented selection method depends on the device. Bedrock 1.21.40 release notes list three ways to change the selected item:

Once a type is selected, use the on-screen or device-specific bundle interaction shown by your inventory controls to remove it. Touch and controller layouts can differ from a Java keyboard-and-mouse tutorial, so do not assume that Java’s left-click and right-click labels map directly to your device.

The table separates confirmed input differences from assumptions. The cited Bedrock notes establish how to select a visible item, while the exact add and remove button labels can depend on the platform’s current control layout.

A reliable workflow for collecting and sorting
1. Craft before you leave
Make the bundle before an exploration trip, place it in an easy-to-reach inventory slot and leave enough normal inventory space for tools, food and a way home. A bundle is most useful when it is available before miscellaneous drops begin filling your slots.
2. Add small, unrelated piles
As you collect items, use the bundle interaction to add partial piles that would otherwise occupy separate slots. Avoid treating the bundle as a destination for every item automatically; keep frequently used blocks or tools in ordinary slots where they can be reached immediately.
3. Check the tooltip before adding more
The tooltip tells you whether the bundle is becoming crowded and, in Java, which type is currently selected. If you are approaching the shared limit, decide which low-priority items are worth keeping before the bundle becomes completely full.
4. Select deliberately when retrieving
When you return to a base, show the tooltip, scroll to the required visible type and remove it. Take out one category at a time so that flowers, drops and building materials do not become mixed with the items you intend to craft immediately.
5. Empty only in a safe location
If you want everything out at once, hold the bundle and use the drop interaction while standing on a flat, safe surface. Pick up the resulting items before moving away, and never use the dump action beside hazards or while inventory space is critically low.

The crafting result is missing
- Confirm the arrangement is vertical: String in the upper square and Leather directly below it.
- Check that you used Leather, not rabbit hide from an old tutorial.
- Verify that your game version includes the bundle recipe described by the Java 1.21.2 release notes or the corresponding Bedrock implementation.
- Try both the 2×2 personal grid and a crafting table to rule out a placement mistake.
An item will not fit
The shared stack may be full. Remove some contents first, then try again. Remember that many different item types can occupy the bundle, but their combined amount cannot exceed the single-stack capacity.
Right-click removes the wrong item
In Java, right-click acts on the selected top item type. Keep the tooltip visible, scroll to another visible type and watch for that item to poke out of the icon before right-clicking again.
You cannot see everything in the tooltip
That is expected once the bundle contains 12 or more item types. The interface shows only the top three rows in that case. Use the visible selection controls and remove some contents to expose items that are lower in the list.
The controls in a Bedrock tutorial do not match
Check whether the tutorial is for mouse, controller or touch. Bedrock 1.21.40 documents mouse-wheel, right-stick and tap methods for selection respectively. A Java guide that says “right-click” may not describe the button shown on your Bedrock device.
Items disappeared after using the bundle
Holding a bundle and right-clicking in Java can empty items onto the ground instead of removing one selected type through the inventory. Search the nearby ground immediately, especially around slopes, water and transparent blocks, and use selective removal when you need to preserve the rest.
For Bedrock creators and pack authors
Microsoft Learn documents a minecraft:bundle_interaction component for Bedrock creators. That component requires minecraft:storage_item. In Bedrock 1.21.110, the documentation lists the component as available without enabling an experimental toggle.
This note applies to custom content and creator workflows, not to a player’s ordinary crafting steps. If a behavior pack or custom item is being built, check both component requirements and the target Bedrock version before distributing it; a pack that depends on the component should not assume older versions expose the same interface.
Choosing between a bundle and ordinary storage

The bundle’s strength is organization under pressure: it turns a collection of awkward partial piles into one manageable slot. Its weakness is retrieval friction and the fixed shared capacity, so anything needed constantly or in large quantities belongs outside it.
