Secure Solr in production by keeping it behind a firewall, binding it only to required network interfaces, enabling authentication and authorization, encrypting connections with TLS, and protecting ZooKeeper in SolrCloud deployments. Treat these as layers: a login prompt does not make an internet-facing Solr instance safe, and network restrictions do not replace permissions or encryption.
Solr documentation returned for this topic spans Solr 9.1, 9.3, Solr 9 upgrade notes, current guide pages, and Solr Operator 0.4. Check the documentation and upgrade notes for your exact release and deployment type before applying version-sensitive settings.

1. Keep Solr off untrusted networks
Apache’s Solr Reference Guide warns: “No Solr API, including the Admin UI, is designed to be exposed to non-trusted parties.” Put Solr behind a firewall and allow connections only from the applications, operators, and infrastructure that need them. Apache recommends firewall protection even when other security measures are enabled.

Bind only to interfaces that need to serve requests
Solr binds to 127.0.0.1 by default in the cited production guidance. That limits access to the local host, but networked deployments may need a deliberate listener configuration. Set SOLR_JETTY_HOST to the required interface rather than choosing a broad bind without considering who can reach it. Check the matching release’s startup and deployment guide for how that setting is applied in your installation.

Use host allow and deny rules as an additional control
The security guide documents SOLR_IP_ALLOWLIST and SOLR_IP_DENYLIST for restricting hosts. These rules can narrow which source addresses may connect, but they are not a substitute for a firewall or for authentication and authorization. Confirm the supported syntax and behavior in your Solr version’s guide before deployment.
2. Choose authentication and authorization deliberately
Authentication establishes who is making a request; authorization decides which resources and operations that identity may use. Solr supports authentication plugins including Basic, JWT, certificate, Kerberos, and Hadoop options, as well as rule-based authorization. The right choice depends on your identity system, clients, and required permission granularity; plugin availability and configuration details vary by version and deployment.
Place security.json where your deployment expects it
Solr’s security plugins are configured in security.json, which must be available before startup so the plugins can initialize. Its location differs by deployment shape:

| Deployment | security.json location |
Operational consideration |
|---|---|---|
| SolrCloud | The ZooKeeper chroot, or the ZooKeeper root if no chroot is configured. | Protect ZooKeeper access because it contains the security configuration. |
| Standalone | Under $SOLR_HOME. |
Make the configuration available before Solr starts. |
| User-managed cluster | Present on each node. | Keep the security configuration consistent across nodes. |
Use the exact configuration schema documented for your Solr release; do not assume a plugin example from another major version will behave identically.
Pair identity checks with permissions
Basic authentication identifies a user but does not, by itself, restrict that user’s access. Configure an authorization plugin when users or services need different access to APIs, operations, or collections. Rule-based authorization can reserve security APIs for administrators and limit collection access by role.
The Basic Authentication Plugin documentation says credentials are sent in plain text by default and recommends SSL when Basic authentication is enabled. Do not treat Basic authentication as a secure transport mechanism; enable TLS as described below.

Restrict who can change security policy
Access to write security.json is highly privileged: Apache notes that a user who can write it can modify all permissions and user-role assignments. Limit that capability to trusted administrators and protect the file or its ZooKeeper location with appropriate access controls.

3. Encrypt client and cluster traffic with TLS
TLS can encrypt connections between clients and Solr, and in SolrCloud it can also protect node-to-node traffic. Apache’s SSL guide describes configuring keystore and truststore properties through SOLR_SSL_* settings. Use the instructions for the deployed Solr release to configure certificates, trust, and the relevant listener behavior.
Prepare SolrCloud’s URL scheme before starting SSL-enabled nodes
For SolrCloud, set the cluster-wide urlScheme property to https in ZooKeeper before starting nodes that should communicate over SSL. Configure and verify the certificates and trust relationships for the endpoints that will communicate; do not disable certificate or peer-name checks merely to suppress errors without understanding the security impact.

Use client certificates only with verified certificate contents
Solr’s certificate authentication plugin can derive a user principal from a client certificate. The servlet container checks the certificate chain and peer hostname or IP before the request reaches the authentication plugin. If certificate fields will determine authorization, verify the contents of the CA-issued certificates and ensure the identity information is trustworthy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.4. Protect ZooKeeper in SolrCloud
ZooKeeper is part of the SolrCloud security boundary, not just a coordination dependency: it stores security.json. Configure ZooKeeper access controls, including ACLs, to prevent unauthorized reads and writes. Apply the ACL procedure that matches both your Solr and ZooKeeper versions; the exact steps are version- and deployment-dependent.
5. Run Solr as a production service safely
For supported Linux distributions, Apache’s production deployment guide describes a service installation script. It recommends separating live Solr data and logs from distribution files so upgrades are easier to manage, and does not recommend running the service as root in production. Confirm the current production guide for your Solr release and operating system before following its service-script instructions.
Account for version-specific behavior
Solr 9 upgrade notes describe security-related changes, including a change to the blockUnknown default for BasicAuthPlugin and JWTAuthPlugin. Defaults and plugin behavior can change across releases, so review the upgrade notes when installing or upgrading rather than assuming an existing configuration retains the same behavior.
Quick Recap
6. Validate the deployment before opening access
- Set the network boundary: configure the intended listener interface, firewall rules, and any applicable IP allow/deny rules. Confirm that only required clients and administrators can reach Solr.
- Install the security configuration: put
security.jsonin the location required by standalone, user-managed, or SolrCloud deployment, and make it available before startup. - Test authorization with distinct identities: verify that permitted users can perform their assigned tasks and that users without the relevant role cannot access restricted APIs, operations, or collections.
- Enable and verify TLS: check client-to-Solr encryption and, for SolrCloud, node-to-node HTTPS communication and certificate validation.
- Lock down ZooKeeper and operations: apply appropriate ZooKeeper ACLs, limit who can alter
security.json, and run the service under a non-root account. - Review release-specific settings: compare the final configuration with the documentation and upgrade notes for the exact Solr version and deployment architecture.
