Private spaceflight prices range from a reported $750,000 base price per seat for a Virgin Galactic suborbital reservation tranche to more than $65 million per customer for Axiom Space’s Ax-4 trip to the International Space Station (ISS). Those are different kinds of missions, not comparable ticket options: one offers a brief suborbital experience; the other involves orbital transport and a stay aboard the station.
What does a private spaceflight cost?
There is no single private-spaceflight fare or established industry-wide average. The best-documented recent figures in the available sources are tied to specific companies, dates and mission types:

| Example | Reported price | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Virgin Galactic, 2025 | $750,000 per seat | Base price for a recently reopened tranche of reservations, as reported in the company’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K. It is not an itemized all-in contract or a guarantee that every seat is available at that price. Virgin Galactic’s 2025 Form 10-K |
| Axiom Space Ax-4, 2025 | More than $65 million per customer | Associated Press reporting on the Ax-4 customer ticket price. This is a reported price for that mission, not a public rate card for all Axiom missions. Associated Press report on Ax-4 |
Virgin Galactic’s 2025 filing also records earlier base prices of $450,000 per seat in 2021 and $600,000 per seat in 2023. They are historical figures, not current prices; reservation tranche and date matter. Virgin Galactic’s 2025 Form 10-K
Why the two prices are not like-for-like
Suborbital flight: a short experience
Virgin Galactic describes its passenger flight as a suborbital journey: passengers experience several minutes of weightlessness and views of Earth before returning, rather than traveling to an orbiting destination. The company’s filing describes about 90 minutes from passenger boarding through disembarkation, alongside a multi-day preparation and training program. Virgin Galactic’s 2025 Form 10-K

Orbital ISS mission: transport and a station stay
An ISS mission involves reaching the station and supporting a stay measured in days. NASA says private astronaut missions are normally less than 30 days, although the length varies by mission. Ax-4 spent 18 days at the ISS; Axiom Space said Ax-5 was targeted for no earlier than January 2027, with up to 14 days docked. Those are mission-specific facts, not a guarantee of future schedules or durations. NASA’s private astronaut mission history Axiom Space’s Ax-5 announcement
NASA defines a private astronaut mission as a privately funded commercial flight to the ISS on which approved commercial activities are conducted by private astronauts. The difference in destination, time in space, training, transportation and station logistics explains why a suborbital seat price and an ISS customer price cannot be treated as two versions of the same fare. What does the quoted price include?
Virgin Galactic reservation
Virgin Galactic says its passenger journey includes a comprehensive spaceflight training and preparation program, the flight experience, and access to its astronaut community. The cited filing does not itemize all costs or establish that personal expenses such as travel to New Mexico, lodging, taxes or insurance are included. Confirm those details in the written booking terms rather than assuming the base reservation price covers them. Virgin Galactic’s 2025 Form 10-K
Private ISS mission
An ISS mission price relates to a package of transport and mission-specific services, not simply a launch ride. NASA lists support that can include:

NASA says total service costs vary by mission, the provider funds the private astronaut mission, and the value of individual services depends on the mission’s goals and requirements. The list describes possible station support; it does not mean every service is sold directly to an individual or bundled identically into every customer’s ticket. NASA’s commercial-space FAQ
NASA’s Ax-2 announcement illustrates how mission components can be arranged: Axiom contracted SpaceX for transport to and from the ISS, while NASA support included crew supplies, cargo delivery, storage and other in-orbit resources. Training and facilities were arranged through reimbursable agreements; plans also addressed contingency time and cargo and sample returns. Those Ax-2 arrangements illustrate operational logistics, not a current itemized price breakdown for Ax-4, Ax-5 or future missions. NASA’s Ax-2 mission order announcement

What to check before comparing a quote
A headline price is only useful if you know what kind of mission it buys and what the customer is responsible for. Ask the provider to confirm these points in writing:
