To secure a YouTube channel, protect every Google Account linked to it, enable two-step verification, and give collaborators channel permissions instead of sharing passwords. If you suspect a takeover, recover the associated Google Account first, then remove unauthorized changes and review everyone’s access.
Why YouTube channel security starts with Google Accounts
A YouTube channel is tied to at least one Google Account. YouTube says a hacked channel means at least one associated Google Account has been compromised, so protecting only the channel’s videos or settings is not enough. Secure the owner’s account and the accounts of every authorized user. YouTube’s hacked-channel recovery guidance explains the connection.

How do I prevent my YouTube channel from being hacked?
Use strong sign-in protection
Use a unique, strong password for the Google Account and turn on two-step verification. YouTube identifies passkeys as its strongest option against phishing: they verify access with a device’s fingerprint, face scan, or screen lock. A physical security key is another strong phishing-protection option. Other listed methods include Google prompts, Google Authenticator, phone verification codes, and backup codes; YouTube describes text or phone codes and backup codes as less secure alternatives. Choose a method each account holder can use and keep recovery options current. See YouTube’s channel security guidance.

Recognize phishing before it becomes account access
Phishing can arrive by email, text, phone call, or a web page that impersonates a trusted institution, client, or colleague. Creator-targeted lures may be framed as sponsorships, marketing help, free cryptocurrency, encrypted files, thumbnail templates, or premium editing software. Verify a business request through a public company contact or someone you already know, and do not share sign-in details.
YouTube says it will not ask for account information by email, message, or phone call. Do not enter your Google password anywhere outside myaccount.google.com. Treat unexpected files and links with suspicion, even when the sender appears familiar. YouTube’s creator safety tips cover phishing and malware risks.

Reduce malware risk
Malicious downloads can give an attacker access to an account or device. Avoid unknown apps, software sources, and attachments you were not expecting. YouTube recommends antivirus software and Chrome Enhanced Safe Browsing, particularly because encrypted files may evade antivirus scans. Review connected apps in your Google Account and remove those you no longer need. These safeguards reduce exposure; they do not replace two-step verification or careful handling of sign-in requests. See YouTube’s channel security tips.

Do not give an editor, agency, sponsor, or manager the owner’s Google password. YouTube channel permissions let people work on the channel without granting them access to the owner’s Google Account. Assign each person the least powerful role that covers their work, and check YouTube’s current role capabilities before granting access: permissions and labels can change. The roles described in YouTube’s creator safety guidance include Manager, Editor, Editor (limited), Viewer, and Viewer (limited); capabilities differ, including whether a person can change channel details or see revenue information.

Review the channel’s access list periodically. Remove former collaborators and any account you do not recognize. YouTube also recommends using a different email address for the channel than for other accounts, which can limit the impact of exposure elsewhere.
A Brand Account is a separate access route: YouTube says its roles can grant access to both the Google Account and the channel. Owner and manager roles can upload videos and make changes, so review who holds those roles and whether they still need them. Details are in YouTube’s creator safety guidance.

How can I tell if my YouTube channel was hacked?
Look for changes or activity you did not make, including:
- A changed profile picture, channel description, or other channel details.
- Altered email settings or an unexpected AdSense association.
- Messages sent from your account that you did not write.
- Videos uploaded without your permission.
- Existing videos whose privacy settings have been changed so they are hidden.
Any of these signs calls for an immediate review of the linked Google Account and channel permissions. They are warning signs, not proof of one particular entry route. YouTube’s recovery guidance and channel cleanup tool instructions describe what to check.
What should I do if my YouTube channel was hacked?
- Recover and secure the linked Google Account. If you can sign in, change the password and secure the account. If you cannot, use Google’s account recovery process and answer the ownership questions as accurately as you can. Ask other channel owners and managers to secure their own accounts too.
- Reverse unauthorized channel changes promptly. Review channel details and settings, and remove unauthorized uploads when appropriate. YouTube advises reverting changes quickly to help avoid potential policy consequences; consult its hacked-channel recovery steps.
- Audit activity and access. YouTube Studio’s cleanup tool is available to channel owners and managers. It lists unusual activity, can suggest corrections, and helps review permissions. Also check uploads, users, branding, video privacy, comments, playlists, thumbnails, subscriptions, and AdSense or Content Manager settings where applicable. Follow YouTube’s cleanup instructions.
- Close other access paths. Enable two-step verification, update recovery options, remove unknown users and unnecessary connected apps, and make sure collaborators do not share credentials. Secure all associated users’ accounts, not only the channel owner’s.
- Contact Creator Support if eligible. YouTube says creators who have recovered their Google Account may contact Creator Support if they qualify. Its help page limits support for potential hacking incidents to those from the past nine months because of data-retention limits. Check the current eligibility guidance before relying on this route.
Account recovery alone does not establish that every unauthorized access path has been removed. Continue reviewing the account, channel activity, and permissions after regaining access.
