Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProtecting a website from automated scanning and exploitation takes more than blocking bots at the edge. Map the endpoints attackers may target, reduce exploitable weaknesses, apply endpoint-specific limits, layer edge and application defenses, and monitor what happens after requests reach your systems. No WAF or bot detector makes an application invulnerable.
Map exposed routes and the threats they face
Start with an inventory of public routes and sensitive flows: authentication, account creation, search, checkout, file uploads, and APIs. For each, consider whether the concern is vulnerability probing, credential attacks, scraping, or abuse of a legitimate feature. These threats are not interchangeable: a login endpoint needs controls different from those for search or checkout.

OWASP uses OAT-014 Vulnerability Scanning for automated probing for weaknesses. Its automated-threat taxonomy also covers unwanted automation that misuses valid application functions, not just attacks that exploit a software flaw. That distinction matters: patching vulnerabilities does not by itself prevent scraping or business-logic abuse.

Find and fix weaknesses, then retest
Use authorized security scans to identify potential weaknesses, review dependencies, prioritize findings by risk, and fix vulnerable code or configuration. Then retest the affected routes. A scanner reports findings; it does not remediate them.
#1 Best Overall
OWASP’s Secure My App guidance recommends automated scans with ZAP, dependency review, implementing fixes, and ongoing monitoring in CI/CD. Treat scans as one part of a continuing development and maintenance process, not as proof that a site is secure.
Rate-limit the endpoints automation is targeting
Apply limits to meaningful dimensions such as source IP, session, authenticated identity, and endpoint. A limit based only on IP is easy to evade when requests come from distributed sources; a global limit can also penalize unrelated users while failing to protect a sensitive route.
Rank #2
For login protection, OWASP’s Bot Management and Anti-Automation Cheat Sheet describes separate buckets for username and source IP. A username bucket can constrain attempts against one account across many sources, while an IP bucket can constrain a source attempting many accounts. Tune thresholds to the endpoint and watch for false positives and harm to legitimate users.

Prefer token-bucket or sliding-window approaches over a fixed window that can allow bursts around window boundaries. Rate limits should be tested against expected legitimate traffic as well as abuse patterns.
Layer edge, application, and backend defenses
A CDN, WAF, or anti-bot service can add edge signals such as IP or ASN reputation and basic request limits. Application-level controls can account for sessions and authenticated identities, use behavioral signals or honeypots, and introduce a challenge when confidence warrants it. Backend monitoring can reveal unusual account or transaction velocity that a request-level rule may not recognize.
OWASP’s cheat sheet warns that “A single control is brittle.” Combine controls rather than relying on one vendor or detection method; make each layer fit the endpoint and its legitimate use.
Rank #4
WAF implementation options
OWASP lists ModSecurity and Coraza as WAF engines, alongside the OWASP Core Rule Set, which supplies generic attack-detection rules for compatible engines. These are implementation options, not guarantees of universal protection. Choose based on deployment fit, integrations, rule maintenance and tuning, false-positive handling, and who will operate the system. The OWASP source does not establish a comparative effectiveness ranking.
Monitor signals and respond proportionately
Log signals that help explain what happened and whether a request succeeded. Establish a baseline, then review unusual authentication attempts, validation failures, authorization patterns, and request rates. For suspicious activity, throttling or a step-up challenge may be more appropriate than an immediate hard block; use the response that fits the confidence and potential harm.
Best Value
Do not block all automated traffic indiscriminately. Search crawlers, monitoring agents, and accessibility tools may be legitimate. Preserve a route for legitimate bots and accessible use, and account for false positives when tuning defenses. Minimize retained fingerprinting data, keep retention short, and document how third-party anti-bot services process it.
Check whether external scanning is available
CISA’s Cyber Hygiene Services describe vulnerability scanning and web application scanning for eligible U.S.-based government and critical-infrastructure organizations. CISA describes monthly reporting for web application scanning and on-demand reports. Confirm current eligibility and service details directly with CISA before relying on the service.
