For HLS or DASH, that means protecting not only the manifest but also its segments and alternate renditions. A signed URL is a bearer credential: whoever has it can use it within its scope and validity period.
What a signed URL does—and does not do
A signed URL is a URL accompanied by a provider-generated signature and usually an expiry or access policy. The receiving CDN or video service validates it before serving the requested resource. It lets an application grant time-limited access without making the media publicly accessible.

It does not independently authenticate the person using it. If an authorized viewer copies a valid link, another person may be able to use it until it expires, subject to any configured restrictions. Signing controls access to fetching the stream; it is not DRM and does not stop an authorized viewer from recording or redistributing decoded playback.

Authorization should happen before signing: your application checks login, purchase, subscription, or another entitlement, and only then asks a trusted backend or managed service to issue playback credentials.

Choose an authorization pattern for the playback requests
HLS and DASH players usually fetch a manifest and then make additional HTTP requests for segments, renditions, and sometimes retries or ranges. Choose a method that covers the full set of resources your player needs.

Before choosing, map how many resources a session requests, whether supported players handle cookies and redirects, whether URL rewriting is needed, how credentials refresh for retries, how the origin is locked down, how keys rotate, and whether IP or geographic restrictions are available. No one pattern suits every player and delivery setup.

Secure playback step by step
- Put media behind an enforcing service. Use a CDN or hosted video service configured to require authorization. If object storage is the origin, block direct public access where feasible so viewers cannot bypass the CDN.
- Authenticate and authorize in your application. Confirm the viewer’s identity and entitlement for the specific video before issuing playback access.
- Sign on a trusted backend. Create a token with only the required resource scope and an expiry. Keep private signing keys and API credentials out of browser and mobile application code.
- Deliver credentials securely. Return the URL or set the cookie over HTTPS. For hosted video, configure the asset to require signed playback before using the service’s token endpoint or signing key.
- Cover the entire playback graph. Confirm that the manifest, segments, alternate renditions, and requests made during retries all receive valid authorization—not just the first manifest request.
- Set a practical expiry and refresh path. Balance link-sharing risk against playback duration, buffering, clock differences, reconnects, and later range or segment requests. Refresh credentials when a legitimate session may outlast them.
- Test both allowed and denied cases. Try permitted playback, missing credentials, expired and modified credentials, direct-origin requests, and the browser and native players you support.
Provider-specific implementation details
Amazon CloudFront
AWS describes an application deciding whether a viewer is entitled, creating a signed URL, and CloudFront validating its signature and policy. CloudFront supports canned and custom policies; custom policies can set a not-before time and an IP range as well as expiry. AWS lists RSA 2048 and ECDSA 256 keys for signed URLs and cookies. AWS recommends signed cookies when granting access to multiple restricted files, explicitly including HLS video files; signed URLs fit individual files or clients that do not support cookies. Consider origin access control for S3 so a viewer cannot fetch the object directly instead of going through CloudFront. CloudFront checks expiry on each HTTP request, so a later range request made after expiry can fail even if an earlier request began before expiry. Include required query parameters before signing: AWS warns that adding parameters after signing can result in a 403 response. See CloudFront private content overview.

Cloudflare Stream
Cloudflare says Stream videos are viewable by anyone with only a video ID by default. Enabling requireSignedURLs prevents public-ID playback and requires a signed token. The token can be used in HLS and DASH manifest URLs. Cloudflare’s documentation says a token-endpoint request without a body returns a token that expires in one hour, with no other restrictions or download access; custom claims can change expiry and access restrictions, and downloadable can enable MP4 or audio download URLs. These are Cloudflare-specific behaviors, not general signed-URL defaults; check the current Cloudflare Stream security documentation before implementation. The page displayed a last-updated date of May 7, 2026.
Google Cloud CDN and Media CDN
Google Cloud CDN signed URLs are time-limited and usable by anyone who possesses them. A URLPrefix can cover multiple URLs. Google describes signed cookies for HLS and DASH because signing every segment and rendition URL individually can burden the application and increase origin load; cookies can cover a URL prefix and expiry without rewriting every manifest URL. Google recommends HTTPS for signed URLs and secure transport when distributing them. Anyone with a signing key can create accepted signed URLs or cookies until that key is deleted. Media CDN advises accounting for clock synchronization and network retries when setting timestamps. Its documentation says to set timestamps no less than one minute into the future or no less than the length of the video stream, whichever is greater. Confirm the current syntax and behavior for the service you deploy; see Media CDN signed requests.

- The manifest is protected but segments are exposed or fail. A manifest signature alone may not authorize the segment and rendition requests that follow. Use a mechanism covering every required object and test the player’s requests.
- Users can bypass the CDN. A publicly reachable storage bucket or server origin can defeat CDN authorization. Restrict origin access and test direct-origin requests.
- A signing key is present in client code. Users can extract a shipped private key and forge credentials. Move signing to a trusted backend or provider-managed signing service, and rotate exposed keys.
- A copied link keeps working. A bearer URL can be shared until it expires or is revoked. Use an expiry appropriate to playback, avoid exposing tokens unnecessarily, and use provider-supported scope, IP, or geographic restrictions when they fit your audience and player.
- Playback breaks partway through. Later segment, range, retry, or reconnect requests may arrive after expiry. Provide a credential-refresh path and test buffering and reconnect behavior.
- A correctly issued URL returns an error. The path or query may have changed after signing, or a required parameter may have been omitted. Sign the exact resource and parameters required by the provider; for CloudFront, do not append query parameters after signing.
- A viewer can still record playback. Signed access decides who can fetch content; it does not prevent recording or copying after authorized playback is decoded. Do not treat URL signing as copy protection.
