Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The stream key authenticates your feed; the backup is a different ingest destination. In OBS, choose YouTube’s backup RTMPS server for an RTMPS stream. If you use HLS, copy YouTube’s HLS Backup server URL instead—the key is already included in that URL.
What you need to configure
A backup encoder sends the same event to YouTube through an alternate ingest path. The stream key and server URL have different jobs: the key identifies and authenticates the feed, while the URL tells the encoder where to send it. Use an endpoint that matches the stream protocol selected in YouTube Live Control Room; an HLS backup URL is not an RTMPS server address.

This setup is for a second encoder or backup encoder. Configuring a backup endpoint does not mean OBS will automatically switch to it if the computer, encoder, or network fails. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and checking whether the player rolls over to the backup encoder.
Set up an RTMPS backup in OBS
- Get the stream key in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab. Create or select the stream and locate its stream key. You can create a custom key if you need to reuse the same key. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Configure the primary encoder. In OBS, choose the YouTube service and enter the stream key in the key field. YouTube’s general encoder setup instructions describe entering the server URL and key in the encoder.
- Select the backup ingest server. OBS Studio’s YouTube service definition lists the primary RTMPS endpoint as
rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2and the backup asrtmps://b.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2?backup=1. In OBS, select the YouTube backup server option for the backup encoder. Exact labels and available choices can vary by OBS version, so follow the options in your installed version rather than assuming the list will never change. The current endpoint details are in the OBS Project YouTube service definition. - Use the same event credentials on the backup encoder. Enter the stream key associated with the YouTube event and configure the backup encoder to send to the backup endpoint. Keep the primary encoder on its primary endpoint. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview before the event to confirm that the feed is arriving.
If your stream uses HLS
HLS uses a different setup from the RTMPS server choice in OBS. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream key configured for HLS, then copy the displayed Backup server URL into the HLS-capable encoder. YouTube says the stream key is already part of that URL, so do not paste it again as though it were a separate RTMPS key. Follow YouTube’s HLS ingest instructions for the selected encoder.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- HLS segments must be 1–4 seconds long.
- The rolling playlist must have no more than five outstanding segments.
- Use HTTPS POST/PUT; YouTube specifies no encryption besides HTTPS.
- HLS has higher latency than RTMP and disables the ultra-low-latency option.
These are HLS-specific requirements. Do not use the HLS Backup server URL in an RTMPS configuration or the OBS RTMPS backup endpoint for an HLS stream.
Test failover before going live
- Plan ahead. YouTube recommends preparing the stream at least two hours before the event and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before it begins.
- Check the preview and signals. Confirm that the Live Control Room preview receives video, then monitor both audio and video from the encoder feeds.
- Simulate a primary failure. Stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, as YouTube recommends. Confirm that the live player rolls over to the backup encoder. Restore the primary only after you have confirmed the backup path works.
- Check upload capacity. YouTube recommends upload capacity for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate, with another 20% headroom. For example, if the two encoders together send 10 Mb/s, plan for at least 12 Mb/s of available upload capacity. That is a capacity calculation, not a guarantee of stability; allow for other traffic and variation on the connection.
See YouTube’s guidance on live encoder settings and network requirements when planning the event. YouTube’s recommendation to test the backup matters because choosing an alternate endpoint alone does not establish that the backup encoder, key, protocol, and connection work together.

Fix common setup problems
- The backup encoder will not connect: Confirm that the endpoint matches the protocol. For RTMPS, select the YouTube backup server in OBS; for HLS, use the HLS Backup server URL displayed in Live Control Room. Check that the stream key belongs to the intended event.
- YouTube receives a feed, but the player does not roll over: Verify that the second encoder is running and sending to the backup ingest destination, then repeat the failure simulation and monitor the Live Control Room preview. Do not assume endpoint configuration alone creates an automatic switch.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Live Control Room, then replace the old key in OBS and any backup encoder using it. YouTube treats stream keys as credentials.
- The feed is unstable when both encoders run: Check available upload capacity against the combined primary and backup bitrates, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Also check for other devices or applications consuming upload bandwidth.
- An HLS feed is delayed or rejected: Check the HLS-specific segment length, rolling playlist limit, HTTPS method, and encryption requirements. HLS also has higher latency than RTMP, so it is not the path to choose when ultra-low latency is required.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded content live on YouTube around the clock rather than maintain a DIY backup-encoder setup, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is not a camera-live service.
