The best Wowza alternative depends on what you use Wowza to do. For live video built into an app, evaluate Mux; for a managed business video platform, investigate Dacast; for configurable cloud encoding, consider AWS MediaLive; and for AWS-native low-latency or interactive applications, consider Amazon IVS. These products are not interchangeable: compare the workflow, operational work and total cost—not just the name on the service.
First, identify what you need to replace
“Wowza alternative” can mean replacing a managed video experience, a live-video API, an encoding service, or a larger streaming setup assembled from cloud components. Write down which parts of your current workflow Wowza handles before shortlisting vendors.

- Managed publishing: You want a hosted platform for publishing live and on-demand video, with player, content controls or monetization features.
- Application integration: Your team needs APIs and playback components to add live video to its own product.
- Encoding infrastructure: You need to process a live feed and are prepared to configure delivery and supporting services.
- Low-latency interaction: Audience response time matters—for example, for interactive events, auctions or gaming.
Also distinguish live camera or encoder feeds from continuous playback of uploaded recordings. A service for one workflow may not replace the other.

1. StreamNeo: continuous prerecorded YouTube streams
If your specific need is keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock by looping uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is the first option to consider for that use case. It is not a like-for-like replacement for Wowza’s broader live-video workflows: StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed, and it does not stream to other platforms.

2. Mux Video: API-led live video in an application
Mux is the clearest fit among these options when developers want to build live video into their own product. Its documented workflow supports RTMP ingest from common broadcast software and hardware, API-created live streams, playback, and stream input-health metrics. Mux also offers a low-latency option aimed at interactive use cases.
Mux pricing separates live input, storage and delivery. Its pricing documentation describes live on Plus and Premium quality, up to 1080p, and 100,000 delivery minutes per month before delivery charges. The documentation accessed on 2026-10-03 showed a starting live-input rate of $0.025 per minute for Plus quality at up to 720p. That is an input rate, not the total cost of a stream: storage and delivery may add charges, and rates vary by quality, resolution and volume. Mux describes pay-as-you-go and credit-based plans; check its current rate card and selected plan before estimating a workload.
3. Dacast: managed business video platform candidate
Dacast is worth investigating if you want a managed platform for live and on-demand business video rather than an encoding component alone. A comparison published by Wowza describes Dacast features including white-label controls, monetization, content management, developer tools, embedded HTML5 playback, analytics, recording and 24/7 support. That comparison also flags areas to verify, including low latency, DRM, protocols, WebRTC, audience caps and social simulcasting.

Because those feature descriptions come from a competitor’s comparison, treat them as a shortlist of questions—not confirmation of Dacast’s current plans or limits. Check Dacast’s own current product and pricing information before choosing it. The available evidence does not establish current Dacast plan prices.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. AWS Elemental MediaLive: configurable cloud encoding
AWS Elemental MediaLive is a cloud service for real-time video encoding. It supports configurable inputs and outputs, and AWS documents Elemental Link HD and UHD devices as ways to send video into MediaLive. A separate hardware encoder is therefore one possible input path, not a universal requirement for every setup.
MediaLive is an encoding component, not automatically a complete hosted portal. AWS documents an end-to-end architecture that combines MediaLive with MediaPackage for packaging and CloudFront for delivery. That architecture can package adaptive-bitrate output as HLS, DASH and CMAF and includes documented options for redundant inputs and DRM integrations. Choose this route if your team can configure and operate the surrounding cloud services.

AWS bills MediaLive based on running inputs, outputs and add-ons. Input pricing depends on codec, bitrate and resolution; output pricing also depends on codec, bitrate, resolution and frame rate. A running channel can accrue charges even while it is not receiving content or producing outputs, so account for idle time. AWS advertises savings of up to 75% on certain on-demand rates with 12-month reservations; that is an AWS-published maximum subject to reservation terms, not an independent cost comparison.
5. Amazon IVS: AWS-native low-latency and real-time workflows
Amazon IVS is another option for application workflows that need AWS-native low-latency or real-time streaming. Its billing separates video input and viewer output; real-time use can also involve participant-hour charges. Output rates vary by resolution and billing region, so a viewer estimate must use the regions where your audience watches.

Compare the options against your actual workflow
| Option | Best-fit job | What you operate | Cost model to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Looping uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube stream | Upload or playlist, add YouTube stream key, start; cloud service handles looping and recovery | Flat price per slot by billing length; storage is 10 GB per slot, pooled across active slots |
| Mux | Live video integrated into an application | API-led stream creation, ingest, playback integration and product workflow | Live input, storage and delivery; rates depend on quality, resolution and volume |
| Dacast | Managed business live and on-demand publishing | Hosted publishing and whichever controls/features are confirmed for the selected plan | Verify current plan prices, feature availability and limits with Dacast |
| AWS MediaLive | Real-time encoding in a configurable cloud architecture | Inputs, outputs and—in an end-to-end design—packaging and delivery components | Running inputs, outputs and add-ons; idle channel time can still cost money |
| Amazon IVS | AWS-native low-latency or real-time application streaming | Application workflow and channel configuration within AWS | Video input and viewer output; participant hours may apply to real-time usage |
The table describes different product shapes, not equivalent feature sets or quotes. For a useful comparison, make one workload specification and apply it to each candidate:
- Product shape and control: Do you need a managed portal, an API component, or infrastructure your team assembles?
- Latency and interaction: Is ordinary one-way event delivery sufficient, or do viewers need to interact with near-real-time response?
- Ingest and playback: Verify that your encoder or source and the intended viewer player support the vendor’s current ingest and output requirements.
- Scale and resilience: Estimate concurrent channels and viewers, geographic delivery, redundancy needs and who will respond to failures.
- Security and monetization: Confirm requirements for DRM, signed playback, geographic restrictions, paywalls, advertising and access controls.
- VOD and event operations: Check recording, archives, replay, analytics, captions and scheduling if those are part of your workflow.
- Total cost: Include input or encoding hours, resolution and bitrate, storage duration, viewer minutes or bandwidth, regions, support and engineering time.
Billing units are not directly comparable: Mux uses video minutes for input, storage and delivery; MediaLive charges for running resources such as inputs and outputs; IVS separates input from viewer output and may bill participant hours for real-time use. Model your hours, resolutions, audience viewing and delivery regions before comparing totals.
Migration checks before you switch
- Inventory the existing setup. Record how video enters Wowza, which outputs and playback formats you use, whether you transcode, and which workflows rely on recording, security, analytics or monetization.
- Map each requirement to a product. A managed publishing need points toward a managed platform candidate; app integration points toward an API-led service; encoding in a cloud architecture points toward MediaLive; AWS-native low-latency or real-time use points toward IVS. Continuous prerecorded YouTube playback is a separate use case.
- Build a representative cost estimate. Use the same channel hours, input settings, stored hours, viewer minutes, audience regions and redundancy assumptions across provider estimates. Include idle runtime where relevant.
- Verify current limits and terms. Confirm plan-level features, supported formats, free-tier conditions, rate cards and reservation eligibility with the provider. Pricing and product availability can change.
- Test the complete path before cutover. Validate ingest, playback on target devices, expected latency, failure recovery and any recording or access-control requirements. No cross-vendor latency benchmark or migration outcome is established here, so use your own workload for acceptance testing.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a continuous prerecorded YouTube channel, StreamNeo avoids leaving a computer or home connection running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Your videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Wowza alternative have to include a hardware encoder?
No. AWS documents Elemental Link HD and UHD devices as inputs to MediaLive, which makes them one documented input option, not a universal requirement.
Can one vendor’s price per minute be compared directly with another’s?
No. The services bill different components and units, so estimate the same workload—including storage, delivery, regions and runtime—before comparing.
