You can monetize video on demand (VOD) through advertising, subscriptions or memberships, rentals and purchases, fan payments, product sales, or a hosted OTT service. The right mix depends on your audience, content rights, payment friction, platform control, and operating costs. YouTube offers several native options, but eligibility does not guarantee that every video will earn money.
Choose a revenue model that fits your video
VOD means viewers choose when to watch a recorded video. You can earn from that viewing in several ways, and more than one may fit the same catalog. Before committing, weigh audience size and willingness to pay, how predictable the income needs to be, payment friction, platform dependence, geographic eligibility, rights, workload, and fees. The economics and terms vary by provider; do not assume one platform’s rules apply to another.

| Model | How it works | Best questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising (AVOD) | Ads run around or within eligible videos. YouTube documents Watch Page and Shorts Feed ads. | Can you attract enough eligible viewing? Is the content advertiser-suitable, and how much control do you have over ad placement? |
| Subscription or membership (SVOD) | Viewers pay repeatedly for access to a catalog, channel, or creator-defined perks. YouTube channel memberships are monthly. | Can you deliver value worth renewing for? What platform fees and cancellation or churn patterns apply? |
| Rental or purchase (TVOD) | A viewer pays once to rent or buy a title. | Does the video have a clear event, instructional, or premium value? Check storefront reach, transaction costs, rights windows, and provider terms. |
| Fan payments | Viewers contribute voluntarily or in connection with a live event. YouTube documents Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. | Do you have an engaged community? Are the feature and format available in your region? |
| Commerce | Promote your own products or, where eligible, products from other brands. | Is there a natural fit with the video? Make availability, disclosures, and any affiliate terms clear. |
| Creator-owned or hosted OTT | Offer video through a dedicated service. Vimeo describes Vimeo OTT as a video content monetization platform. | Verify current prices, fees, payment and tax handling, customer relationship, apps and device support, analytics, rights controls, and data portability directly with the provider. |
Understand YouTube monetization eligibility
YouTube’s official Help pages, checked October 3, 2026, distinguish the standard threshold for ad revenue from an earlier-access path to some features. These are different eligibility tiers; meeting a threshold does not guarantee channel approval or earnings. Check YouTube Help for current country eligibility and feature-specific requirements because the rules can change.
Standard ad revenue
The YouTube Partner Program overview lists 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours from long-form videos in the previous 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days for ad revenue. Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form watch-hour threshold.

Earlier access to some features
YouTube’s expanded YPP eligibility page describes earlier access in eligible countries at 500 subscribers, three public uploads in 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours or 3 million qualified Shorts views. This path gives access to some features; it is not the standard ad-revenue threshold. Confirm which specific feature is available to your channel and region.
Approval and video-level review
YouTube reviews channels after application and says it continues checking channels for compliance. It may show ads on videos before a creator qualifies to receive a revenue share. Even after acceptance, enabling ads does not guarantee an ad will run: a video is subject to automated or human review and advertiser-friendly guidelines. Policy violations, invalid traffic, copyright claims, or unsuitable content can reduce revenue or lead to enforcement action.

Protect your rights before monetizing
Only monetize material for which you have the necessary rights. YouTube says that enabling ads confirms you have all necessary rights to the video’s visual and audio elements. That includes music, footage, images, and other material you did not create yourself; permission to upload something is not automatically permission to monetize it. Keep records of licenses and permissions, and review applicable platform rules before publishing or enabling monetization.

- Check whether music or footage has restrictions, attribution requirements, or an expiration date.
- Do not assume that a video is eligible simply because it remains available to viewers.
Build a practical revenue mix
Start with the audience and the offer
For broad-reach videos, ads may be a natural starting point if the channel qualifies and the content is suitable. A focused catalog or a loyal audience may support recurring memberships, a one-time rental or purchase, or direct fan support. Product promotion makes sense when the product genuinely relates to the content. These are planning choices, not guaranteed income outcomes; no typical earnings figure follows from a platform eligibility threshold.

Stack options only when each adds value
YouTube lists Watch Page and Shorts Feed advertising, YouTube Premium viewing, Shopping, channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. Availability and requirements vary by feature and may include regional, age, legal, or channel-specific conditions. Make the offer clear to viewers and check the eligibility of each feature separately rather than assuming one approval unlocks everything.
Check the full economics
Before choosing a storefront or hosted service, compare what you will pay and what control you retain. Ask about transaction and payment-processing costs, customer access, recurring billing, geographic reach, rights handling, cancellation, and exporting your catalog or customer data. The available provider information does not establish a complete cross-provider cost or revenue-share comparison, so verify current terms directly before building a business around them.

When a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream fits
A continuously looping stream is one possible way to present prerecorded material on YouTube, but it is not a separate shortcut to monetization. You still need to meet the applicable YouTube requirements, follow its policies, and hold the necessary rights to the video and audio. A live presentation can suit material designed for continuous viewing; for an ordinary on-demand catalog, viewers may be better served by individual videos, playlists, memberships, or transactional access.

StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos or a playlist: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you upload at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo runs prerecorded video to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. A running stream does not by itself qualify a channel for monetization or make content rights-safe. Start the free day on StreamNeo.

Evaluate a hosted OTT service carefully
A hosted OTT platform is a separate route for offering a branded or creator-focused video service rather than relying only on a social platform’s built-in features. Vimeo presents Vimeo OTT as a video content monetization platform. That description alone does not establish its current pricing, revenue share, payment-processing costs, customer ownership, distribution reach, cancellation terms, or export options. Verify those details in current service documentation and the agreement before choosing a provider.
Quick Recap
Common monetization mistakes to avoid
- Confusing access thresholds: the expanded YPP path for some features is not the standard ad-revenue threshold.
- Treating eligibility as income: a channel can qualify without every upload receiving ads or earning revenue.
- Assuming a platform clears your rights: you remain responsible for having the necessary rights to visual and audio material.
- Choosing on headline revenue alone: fees, payment friction, geography, customer access, and exit terms can change the practical value of an option.
- Expecting one feature to be available everywhere: check current country and channel requirements for each monetization feature.
