How to Secure a Smart Home Before Adding Connected Devices

Start with the router, then inventory and update devices already connected. Use these practical checks before adding smart-home products, especially cameras and doorbells.

Secure your router first, then update and protect each connected device before you rely on it. A few settings—strong Wi-Fi encryption, changed default passwords, current software, and fewer unnecessary remote-access features—can reduce avoidable risks without requiring new purchases in most homes.

Secure the router before connecting devices

Your router is the first security boundary for most smart-home devices because they use it to reach the internet. The FTC recommends securing its settings before adding devices.

  1. Sign in to the router’s administrator interface. Use the instructions from your router manufacturer or internet service provider (ISP). The exact menu names vary by model.
  2. Replace default credentials and the network name. Change the administrator username and password, and give the Wi-Fi network a name that does not reveal personal details. Use unique passwords; the Wi-Fi password and administrator password serve different purposes and should not be reused. Anyone with administrator access can change network settings.
  3. Choose modern Wi-Fi encryption. Select WPA3 Personal if available, or WPA2 Personal if WPA3 is not supported. If the router offers only WPA or WEP, check for a software update and review the options again. The FTC describes WPA3 Personal as the newer, best available choice and WPA2 Personal as a functional option for scrambling information. If neither WPA2 nor WPA3 is available after updating, consider replacing the router; there is no need to replace it solely to get a particular brand or model.
  4. Update router software. Check the administrator interface or manufacturer instructions for updates, and turn on update notices where offered. Some ISP-provided routers are updated by the provider; contact the ISP if you cannot find an update control.
  5. Enable the firewall. Find the firewall setting in the router interface and turn it on if it is not already enabled.
  6. Turn off features you do not need. Disable remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) if you do not rely on them. These can make some tasks more convenient, but the FTC warns that they can weaken security.
  7. Consider a guest network. If your router supports one, set a separate password for guests rather than sharing the primary Wi-Fi password. This also gives guest devices a different point of connection from your main network.
  8. Sign out of the administrator account. Log out after changing settings, especially on a shared or public computer.

For a model-specific explanation of these settings, consult the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance and your router manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions.

Make an inventory of devices already on the network

Before adding anything, look at what is already connected. In the router interface, check a list labeled something like “connected devices,” “wireless clients,” or “DHCP clients.” Labels and details vary by router. Use the list as an inventory, then work through each device:
