1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf an NFL team’s backup quarterback is injured, medical attention comes first. A designated emergency third quarterback may enter only if the team’s first two quarterbacks on its game-day Active List cannot play because of injury or disqualification. The coach cannot use that emergency option simply to replace a healthy quarterback who is playing poorly or has been removed for conduct.
What happens immediately after the injury?
An official can call an injury timeout so the player can receive medical attention. NFL ATC spotters also monitor games and can prompt an intervention in specified circumstances. The injury stoppage itself does not activate the emergency quarterback; the team’s quarterback availability and pregame designation determine whether that player can enter.

For a suspected concussion, NFL guidance requires removal for assessment when signs or symptoms are present or an authorized person initiates the protocol. A player diagnosed with a concussion must complete the league’s return-to-participation process and obtain the prescribed clearances before returning to practice or a game. This is a concussion-specific process, not a rule to apply to every injury. See the NFL’s concussion and return-to-participation guidance.

When can the emergency third quarterback play?
NFL.com’s 2023 report reproduces the bylaw: a club may designate one emergency third quarterback from its 53-player Active/Inactive List, excluding elevated players. The emergency quarterback can be activated during the game only if the first two quarterbacks on the game-day Active List cannot participate because of injury or disqualification. The report also says clubs set their game-day Active List 90 minutes before kickoff; that is the deadline stated in the 2023 report, not a newly issued 2026 rule.

The same report says a team carrying three quarterbacks on its game-day Active List is excluded from this emergency designation. The third quarterback is therefore a conditional contingency, not simply another player a coach can call on whenever desired. Read the bylaw details in NFL.com’s 2023 report.
How the two main situations differ
| Situation | Can the emergency quarterback enter? | What governs it? |
|---|---|---|
| The team designated an emergency third quarterback, and both of its first two game-day quarterbacks cannot participate because of injury or disqualification. | Yes, under the bylaw described in the 2023 NFL.com report. | The emergency player must have been designated from the 53-player Active/Inactive List; elevated players are excluded. |
| The team did not designate an eligible emergency quarterback, including because it carries three quarterbacks on the game-day Active List. | The cited bylaw does not provide this emergency-third-quarterback option. | The bylaw describes when a designated emergency quarterback may be used; it does not establish an automatic forfeiture if a team loses its first two quarterbacks. |
What if one of the first two quarterbacks can return?
If either of the first two quarterbacks is medically cleared to return, the emergency quarterback must leave the game. He cannot remain in to play quarterback or switch to another position. The bylaw described in NFL.com’s 2023 report allows him to re-enter at quarterback if another emergency-third-quarterback situation occurs.

What the current-season materials establish
The NFL Football Operations site presents a 2026 NFL Rulebook page. Its listed current-season rule changes concern kickoff adjustments and consultation on potential disqualifications; it does not list an emergency-third-quarterback change. That list is useful context, but it is not a newly published version of the bylaw passage reproduced in the 2023 NFL.com report. The exact emergency-quarterback details above are attributed to that 2023 report rather than presented as newly verified 2026 bylaw text.
