Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo reduce the risk of a botnet taking over your home router, turn off WAN remote administration unless you have a specific, protected need for it; disable network services you do not use; and keep the router’s firmware up to date. These steps reduce exposure but cannot guarantee that a router will not be compromised. Menu names and available options vary by model, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact router.
1. Sign in through the router’s documented local method
Use the manufacturer’s instructions to open the router’s administration page from your home network. Do not assume a universal address, menu label, or setup procedure: these differ across models. If you cannot identify the right steps, consult the manual or support page for the exact model before changing settings.

2. Disable remote administration over the internet
Find the setting for remote administration or remote management and turn off access through the wide area network (WAN), unless you have a specific operational need and a deliberate way to protect it. Remote administration can expose the router’s configuration interface to connections from outside your home network. CISA’s Home Network Security guidance recommends disabling it to help prevent intruders from reaching that interface through the WAN.

The goal is to remove internet-facing access, not necessarily to prevent you from managing the router while connected to your home network. Check the manufacturer’s documentation to confirm what a setting controls.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
3. Turn off services and features the household does not need
Review the router’s service and feature settings. Disable options you do not use, but check whether a device or application in your home depends on them before making a change. CISA’s 2011 guidance specifically discusses these features:
- UPnP: Disable it if your household does not need it. CISA warns that malware already on a network could use UPnP to open a path through the router’s firewall.
- Remote upgrade: Turn it off if it is unnecessary. Follow the router maker’s instructions for updating firmware instead.
- DMZ: Disable it if you do not have a specific need for it. A DMZ setting can expose a device to traffic that would otherwise be restricted by the router.
These recommendations are configuration principles, not a claim that every home has the same requirements. Feature names and effects can vary by router, so verify them in the documentation for your model. CISA’s PDF dates to 2011; use it alongside current, model-specific manufacturer guidance.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
4. Check firmware and install available security updates
Find the installed firmware version in the router’s administration interface, then check the manufacturer’s instructions and support information for your exact model. Apply current firmware updates using the vendor’s documented process. CISA recommends keeping router firmware current because updates address security vulnerabilities.
If the router offers automatic firmware updates, enable them only as a supported option for that model and follow the vendor’s guidance. Availability and update procedures are model-specific.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
5. Consider replacement if security updates have ended
If the manufacturer no longer provides security updates for your router, consider replacing it with a model whose ongoing security support and update delivery you can verify. Check the support details for the exact model rather than relying on a product category or general claim. NIST’s IR 8425A, Recommended Cybersecurity Requirements for Consumer-Grade Router Products, published September 10, 2024, describes cybersecurity outcomes and requirements for consumer routers; it is not a ranking or endorsement of retail models.

For networks and devices that support it, Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) can add another layer of protection. A device manufacturer can specify the communications a device needs, and a MUD-capable network can allow that traffic while blocking other communications. NIST says this can improve resilience and reduce IoT devices’ vulnerability to botnets and other network-based threats. See NIST SP 1800-15, published May 26, 2021.
