For an open-air Roman site, choose Carnuntum near Vienna or Aguntum in East Tyrol; for an easier city-center visit, choose Vienna’s Roman Museum. These are different experiences, with separate access arrangements: Carnuntum combines a paid ticketed area with free outdoor monuments, Aguntum is seasonal, and the Vienna museum has its own visitor information. The details below reflect official listings for 2026; verify schedules and access before travelling.
Choose the kind of Roman visit you want
| Site | Experience | Access model | Location and transport notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carnuntum | Reconstructed Roman buildings and outdoor remains, including the Roman Quarter, plus Museum Carnuntinum. | One day ticket covers the Roman Quarter and Museum Carnuntinum; the civilian amphitheater and Heathen’s Gate are free. | Lower Austria, 45 km east of Vienna and 25 km west of Bratislava. Multiple stops require transport planning. |
| Aguntum | An archaeological park and museum focused on excavated remains; most structures show foundation walls rather than full reconstruction. The thermal bath is a notable preserved complex. | Seasonal admission to the museum and park. | East Tyrol, near Dölsach. The railway station is about 2 km away; the Debant Aguntstraße bus stop is about 450 m away. |
| Roman Museum, Vienna | An urban museum visit featuring Roman-era remains, including tribunal-house ruins, and archaeological finds. | Separate museum visitor arrangements; check current ticket and access details. | At Hoher Markt in Vienna, making it a city-based alternative to the open-air parks. |

Know what the ticket covers
For the 2026 season, Carnuntum lists adult admission at €15, concession admission at €14, admission for ages 6–18 at €8, and free entry for children under six. The day ticket is valid on the visit date for the Roman Quarter and Museum Carnuntinum. It does not cover every nearby monument: the civilian amphitheater and Heathen’s Gate are free to access. Check the official ticket, price and opening-hours page before setting out; the operator says hours and prices may change.

The 2026 schedule lists July 4–September 6, daily from 09:00 to 18:00, followed by September 6–November 15, daily from 09:00 to 17:00. The date September 6 appears at the boundary of both listed periods, so confirm the hours for that day directly with the operator.

Plan between the separate stops
The Roman Quarter, Museum Carnuntinum and free monuments are not a single stop. Carnuntum’s visitor page describes train and car access, free parking and a seasonal shuttle linking the Roman Quarter, Museum Carnuntinum and Petronell station on weekends and public holidays. Shuttle operation and timetable depend on the intended date; check the official arrival and mobility information and confirm live transport connections.
Check access needs in advance
Carnuntum links to dedicated accessibility information from its visitor page. Review that information for the specific areas you intend to visit and contact the operator if you need details that are not clear; do not assume every stop or route has the same access conditions.

Plan an Aguntum visit
Match your date to the season
Aguntum’s 2026 listing gives the season as May 1–October 25, Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00–16:00; it is closed Mondays. Listed admission is €7 for adults, €6 reduced, and €4 for children, young people and students; children under six enter free. Confirm current details on the official opening hours and prices page.

Set expectations for the archaeological park
Aguntum is an excavation-focused site, not a park of fully rebuilt Roman streets. The operator explains that most excavated structures are visible as foundation walls; the thermal bath is a particularly preserved complex. The museum helps interpret the remains, so allow time for both indoor and outdoor parts of the visit.

Arrange transport and assess the route
The museum is at Römerstraße 1, 9991 Dölsach. According to Aguntum, Dölsach railway station is about 2 km away and the Debant Aguntstraße bus stop about 450 m away. The site can also be reached by car or bicycle and lies on the Drauradweg cycle route. Check live transit connections and the walking route for your date; see the operator’s arrival information.
Factor in outdoor accessibility
Aguntum states that the outdoor archaeological area is only partly traversable by wheelchair. Because conditions can vary by route and individual needs, contact the operator before visiting if you need specific access information; the visitor information page provides the operator’s published caveat.

Visit Roman remains in Vienna
The Roman Museum at Hoher Markt offers an indoor, urban alternative to Carnuntum and Aguntum. The Vienna Tourist Board describes Roman-era remains there, including tribunal-house ruins, alongside archaeological discoveries. Check the museum’s current visitor information for hours, tickets and access arrangements before going; the available information here does not establish specific current opening hours or prices.

Check these details before you leave
- Confirm the date-specific schedule. The figures above are published for 2026 and do not establish schedules beyond that season.
- Verify each ticket’s coverage. At Carnuntum, distinguish the paid Roman Quarter and Museum Carnuntinum from the free amphitheater and Heathen’s Gate.
- Check connections and shuttle operation. Transit timetables, walking routes and Carnuntum’s seasonal shuttle can affect how practical a multi-stop visit is.
- Ask about access for your needs. Aguntum publishes an explicit wheelchair caveat for the outdoor area; for Carnuntum and Vienna, consult the operator’s current information rather than assuming blanket access.
