Your recovery phrase is the master backup for a self-custody cryptocurrency wallet: anyone who gets it may be able to restore the wallet and control its funds. Keep it private and offline, make a backup you can recover, and treat any request to share it as a scam. A hardware wallet can reduce exposure to online threats, but it cannot protect a phrase that has already been copied or disclosed.
What a recovery phrase does—and why it must stay private
A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase or mnemonic, can restore access to a wallet. It is not a support code or ordinary account-recovery detail. If another person obtains it, they may be able to access the assets associated with that wallet, even if your phone or hardware device remains in your possession. Bitcoin.org defines a recovery phrase in its glossary.

Keep the phrase off websites, messages, photos, screenshots, and cloud storage. Do not type it into a form or give it to someone claiming to be wallet support. Ethereum.org’s security guidance says, “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!”
How to back up your wallet safely
Record it when the wallet creates it
Follow the wallet’s official backup procedure when setting it up. Write the phrase down carefully and check the transcription using the wallet’s own process. Wallets differ, so there is no single verification procedure that applies to every product. Keep the phrase away from cameras, computers, websites, and other people while backing it up.

Keep the backup offline and recoverable
Store the written backup somewhere private and secure. Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance recommends secure locations, durable storage media, and more than one physical location. Separate copies can help if a single location is damaged or inaccessible, but each extra copy is another opportunity for theft or discovery; restrict access accordingly.
Durable physical media may be worth considering for long-term storage, but the guidance does not establish that any particular material, plate, or product is fireproof or suitable for every situation. Whatever the medium, make sure you can still access and read the backup when needed.

Plan for loss, damage, and succession
Consider how a trusted successor could find the instructions or backup if you die or become unable to act. Bitcoin Core’s inheritance guidance identifies inheritance planning as a consideration for self-custody. The plan should preserve access for the intended person without exposing the phrase during your ordinary day-to-day life.
Choose a wallet arrangement that fits how you use funds
Wallet types differ in convenience, exposure, recovery, and who controls the keys. These are general tradeoffs, not product rankings; the cited guidance does not provide controlled comparisons or current product specifications.

| Wallet arrangement | Who controls the keys? | Main consideration | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile or desktop self-custody wallet | You | Online access is convenient but exposes you to compromised devices and phishing; protecting the phrase backup is essential. | Suitable for active use, but you are responsible for backups and device security. |
| Hardware wallet | You; keys are held on a dedicated device | Offline key storage can reduce exposure to a connected computer. Phrase theft, counterfeit devices, and unsafe approvals remain risks. | Requires additional setup and careful handling. |
| Offline signing or cold storage | You; the signing device stays offline | Bitcoin.org describes signing transactions offline and broadcasting them from a separate online computer. | More operational complexity; generally better suited to savings than frequent transactions. |
| Custodial exchange account | The exchange or custodian | The provider controls custody. Account recovery may be available, but you depend on its security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. | Familiar account recovery comes with counterparty dependence. |
What a hardware wallet protects—and what it does not
A hardware wallet keeps keys on a dedicated device and can limit the impact of a compromised connected computer. It does not make the recovery phrase safe if you photograph, copy, upload, or disclose it. Before approving a transaction, check the information shown on the device itself. Buy from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, and generate the recovery phrase yourself rather than accepting one supplied by another party.
Bitcoin.org describes cold storage as offering the highest security for savings and calls hardware wallets a balance between security and ease of use in its wallet-security guidance. Those are general descriptions, not a guarantee against loss or a product-specific endorsement.

Reduce everyday wallet and account risks
- Keep spending funds separate from savings. Bitcoin.org compares a hot wallet to a physical wallet: keep only an amount appropriate for everyday use in an online computer or mobile wallet, and consider a separate offline arrangement for savings.
- Use trusted, current software. Download wallet software only from trusted sources and keep it updated. For a browser wallet, bookmark the genuine website so you are less likely to follow a phishing link. Remove extensions you do not use and be selective with those that can read or change website data.
- Protect wallet passwords. Use a strong, unique password. Bitcoin.org suggests one generated by a password manager or a long passphrase made from randomly chosen words. That password advice is not a recommendation to store the recovery phrase in an online password manager.
- Harden exchange accounts. If you use a custodial exchange, enable strong multi-factor authentication where available. Ethereum.org warns that SMS-based two-factor authentication is susceptible to SIM-jacking and recommends authenticator apps or security keys as stronger methods.
- Check destination addresses. Before sending funds, verify the entire destination address. Bitcoin.org warns that address poisoning can put a lookalike address into transaction history, where it may be mistaken for a legitimate recipient.
Spot support and recovery scams
Scammers may impersonate support staff and ask for a recovery phrase, private key, or remote access to your device. Others exploit recovery anxiety by demanding an advance fee to restore access. A legitimate support team does not need your recovery phrase. Bitcoin.org’s scam-prevention guidance states: “No legitimate person, business, or support team will ever ask you for your seed phrase or private key.”

- Do not install remote-access software or follow recovery instructions from an unsolicited caller, message, or social account.
- Use the wallet provider’s official support channel, reached independently rather than through a link in the suspicious message.
- Be wary of anyone promising to recover funds for an advance payment.
What to do if your recovery phrase is exposed
Assume a phrase that has been disclosed or copied is compromised. If you can still access the funds, create a new wallet with a newly generated phrase using trusted wallet software or a properly sourced hardware device. Secure the new backup offline, then move the assets to the new wallet. Do not reuse the exposed phrase. Take care that the new phrase is not entered into the same compromised device, site, or support interaction that exposed the old one.
If you have lost a self-custody recovery phrase and no longer have access through a functioning wallet, the provider generally cannot reset it; recovery may be impossible. Ethereum.org explains this in its wallet guidance and FAQ. This differs from a custodial exchange account, where the provider may offer account recovery because it controls custody.
Self-custody or exchange custody: know who is responsible
With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for preserving the phrase or private key. Losing them can mean losing access with no provider able to restore it. With a custodial exchange, the exchange controls custody and may provide account recovery, but access depends on the provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal rules. Ethereum.org discusses the distinction in its wallet guidance. Choose with these responsibilities in mind rather than assuming the two arrangements have the same recovery options.
