Use a structured simulator curriculum with qualified feedback, study platform-specific material when available, and progress to supervised training through your institution.
What can you practice without the robot?
Separate two learning goals: performing endovascular procedures and controlling a particular robotic platform. A general endovascular simulator can help you rehearse procedural tasks and interpret simulated imaging. It should not be treated as a replica of robotic-console controls unless the simulator and your training program confirm that it reproduces those controls.

Transferable endovascular tasks
Depending on the simulator and curriculum, practice may include guidewire and catheter manipulation, diagnostic arteriography, fluoroscopy, digital subtraction angiography, roadmapping, contrast use, and device positioning or deployment. The ANGIO Mentor vendor curriculum also describes simulated EVAR and TEVAR steps, embolization, and troubleshooting scenarios such as endoleaks. These are examples of curriculum content, not a personal clinical protocol; choose objectives with a qualified supervisor and only practice tasks the available system supports.
Robotic-console skills
Console operation is platform-specific. Siemens Healthineers offers on-demand learning material associated with CorPath GRX, but its page says the material is for training only and does not replace the Operator Manual. Siemens also warns that the material may not reflect current hardware or software and may not be available in every country. Use it only as preparatory orientation for that platform, and follow current official instructions and local training requirements.

Which training resource fits your goal?
| Resource | What it offers | Best-supported use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| CorPath GRX on-demand material (Siemens Healthineers) | Online material associated with the CorPath GRX platform. | Platform-specific orientation or preparation, where available. | Training material only; it does not replace the Operator Manual and may not reflect current hardware or software or be available in every country. |
| ANGIO Mentor curriculum (Simbionix, 2012) | A vendor-authored virtual-reality curriculum covering peripheral and aortic endovascular tasks, including wire and catheter handling, imaging, EVAR, TEVAR, and embolization. | Structuring general endovascular simulator practice. | The curriculum does not establish that the simulator reproduces CorPath controls or transfers skill to robotic-console operation. |
| CathTrain (manufacturer product description) | A described physical and virtual patient-specific simulator using actual or modeled wires, catheters, balloons, coils, and stents. | Potential physical or virtual procedural practice, subject to local access and evaluation. | Its features and validity claims are manufacturer-described; verify independent performance evidence and availability. |
| BEST simulator (2018 peer-reviewed study) | The study assessed face, content, and construct validity for specified basic endovascular tasks. | Understanding evidence for the tasks and simulator studied. | Those findings do not establish competence in robotic endovascular surgery or clinical transfer for robotic cases. |
How to build a staged practice plan
- Set a defined learning objective. Identify the specialty, intended procedure, learner level, and target robotic platform with a training director or qualified supervisor. Ask whether the immediate goal is procedural knowledge, catheter-navigation practice, imaging interpretation, or platform-specific console operation.
- Review the procedure before simulator time. Prepare the relevant vascular anatomy and procedural steps. The ANGIO Mentor curriculum assumes prior knowledge and starts modules with an experienced operator demonstrating a case; use that as a model for preparation, not as a substitute for local instruction.
- Practice supported tasks deliberately. Select tasks available on your simulator, such as wire and catheter navigation, angiographic imaging, device positioning, or simulated complication management. Work toward explicit objectives and review errors rather than repeating cases without feedback.
- Combine supervised and independent practice. Vall d’Hebron’s endovascular residency program describes online theory, supervised high-fidelity simulator practice, autonomous practice, and a combined theory-and-practical assessment. Its program page specifies a minimum of 20 hours of autonomous practice throughout each module; that is a program detail, not a universal training requirement. A Simbionix vendor curriculum from 2012 suggests weekly faculty-mentored sessions over six months and review of performance reports. These are examples of structured approaches, not prescriptions validated for every learner or robotic platform.
- Arrange platform-specific instruction and progression. Ask your institution, training director, or the platform manufacturer about approved training access, the relevant hardware and software version, availability in your country, supervision, and the assessment required before clinical exposure. Move from simulation to patient-facing work only through the clinical pathway set by your institution and jurisdiction.
Can simulation replace clinical robotic training?
No. Simulation can support preparation and repeated practice, but the cited evidence does not establish that generic endovascular simulation reproduces robotic-console control or qualifies someone to perform a clinical robotic procedure independently.
In a 2018 BEST simulator study, 21 medical students, 26 residents, and 14 expert surgeons participated in an assessment of face, content, and construct validity for basic tasks on that simulator. The findings apply to the named simulator and tested tasks; they are not proof of competence or clinical transfer for robotic endovascular surgery.

An IMRA/SRS Delphi consensus published in 2024 treated simulation as part of a broader robotic-surgery training continuum. Only 17% agreed with the proposition that simulation models alone could provide sufficient experience without clinical experience; that figure is the share agreeing with a consensus statement, not a measured training success rate. Separately, a 2026 UK Delphi paper reported consensus above 80% for basic system control, camera control, clutching, dissection, energy use, and retraction as simulator prerequisites before clinical console training. That consensus concerns multispecialty robotic surgery, not an endovascular-specific certification standard.

What to ask a supervisor or training center
- Which robotic platform, procedure, and learner level does the training cover?
- Does the simulator reproduce that platform’s controls, or only general catheter navigation and imaging?
- Which tasks can I practice, and what performance measures or feedback are available?
- Who supervises practice, and what assessment is required before progressing to clinical training?
- Is approved online or simulator training available for the current hardware and software version in my location?
- What are the local eligibility requirements, schedule, and cost?
Availability, eligibility, cost, and clinical progression depend on the institution, platform, specialty, learner, and jurisdiction. No cited source establishes a home-built or low-cost setup as a safe, validated substitute for a clinical endovascular robotic system.
