For most screenshots, press Windows + Shift + S, select the part of the screen you want, then open the notification to edit or save the image. To save the entire screen directly as a file, press Windows + PrtSc and look in PicturesScreenshots.
Choose the screenshot method that fits
| What you want to capture | Shortcut | Where the image goes |
|---|---|---|
| A selected part of the screen | Windows + Shift + S | Copied to the clipboard; open the notification to edit or save it in Snipping Tool. |
| The entire screen, saved as a file | Windows + PrtSc | PicturesScreenshots. |
| The active window | Alt + Print Screen | Copied to the clipboard; paste it into another app. |
These instructions apply to the Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance covered by Microsoft. The exact behavior of PrtSc can vary with keyboard hardware and Windows settings.

Capture part of the screen with Windows + Shift + S
- Arrange the screen so the information you need is visible.
- Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen-snipping overlay opens.
- Select a capture mode if the overlay offers the choices, then select the area you want. Snipping Tool’s still-image modes include rectangular, window, full-screen, and freeform capture.
- Select the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool. You can annotate, crop, copy, save, or share the image there.
Microsoft describes Windows + Shift + S as a way to select a screen region and copy the screenshot to the clipboard. A clipboard copy is temporary—it is not automatically a file in a folder. In Snipping Tool, use Save as to create a file you can find and open later. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide.
Save the whole screen directly
Press Windows + PrtSc. Windows saves the full-screen image in the Screenshots folder inside Pictures. Open File Explorer and go to Pictures, then Screenshots, to find it. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts reference lists Fn + Windows + Space Bar as an alternative on some devices without a PrtSc key; the available combination depends on the hardware.

Capture just the active window
Click the window you want so it is active, then press Alt + Print Screen. This copies the active window’s image to the clipboard rather than saving a file. Open a document, email, or image app and press Ctrl + V to paste it. Microsoft documents this shortcut in its Office screenshot instructions.
Edit or save a screenshot in Snipping Tool
After a snip, selecting its notification opens the image in Snipping Tool. Use the app’s controls to mark up or crop the capture, copy it, save it, or share it. If you do not see or select the notification, search for Snipping Tool from Start to open the built-in app. Microsoft’s guide to Snipping Tool covers its capture and editing options.

When PrtSc does something unexpected
You have not necessarily pressed the wrong key: PrtSc does not behave identically on every Windows setup. Microsoft’s current keyboard-shortcut reference describes PrtSc as opening screen snipping and says that action can be configured in Settings; Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance also describes PrtSc as copying a full-screen image. The key’s behavior can therefore depend on settings, hardware, and Windows updates.
- For a selected region, use Windows + Shift + S.
- To open the built-in capture app directly, search for Snipping Tool from Start.
- If your keyboard has no PrtSc key, check its function-key layout; Microsoft lists Fn + Windows + Space Bar for some devices.
Use a screen recording instead of a still
In supported versions of Snipping Tool, Windows + Shift + R starts a video snip. This records screen activity; it is not a still screenshot.
