Choose the laptop that matches the school’s device policy and the software the student must use. A Windows 11 laptop is generally the safer choice for a required application that needs Windows or a supported desktop installation. A Chromebook can work well when coursework fits ChromeOS and web apps and the school supports it. Before comparing features, check the exact device model and its remaining support life.
Start with school requirements, not the operating-system label
Ask the school or instructor which devices are allowed and identify the software the student must use. Include exam or lockdown tools, required peripherals, and any applications that need a desktop installation. A tool that works in a browser may not offer the same features as its desktop version, so verify the specific workflow rather than relying on an app’s name alone.

For Windows software, check the publisher’s supported operating systems and hardware requirements; Microsoft specifically advises checking with the software publisher for app-specific needs. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements describe the operating system baseline, not a guarantee that every course application will work well.

When Windows 11 is the better fit
Lean toward Windows 11 if a required course program needs Windows, a desktop installation, or hardware that the school has confirmed is supported. Confirm that the particular laptop can run Windows 11 and meets the software publisher’s requirements before buying.

When a Chromebook is the better fit
Lean toward a Chromebook if the school permits or manages ChromeOS devices and the student’s coursework can be completed with the required browser-based or ChromeOS-compatible tools. If the school provides a device policy or support list, use it to verify the exact model or configuration.
Use minimum specifications as a compatibility floor
Microsoft’s current Windows 11 requirements include a supported 1 GHz or faster processor with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of storage, alongside other requirements. Those are minimum operating-system requirements, not a performance recommendation. A laptop that meets them may still be a poor fit for demanding course software or extensive multitasking. Check the apps’ own requirements and consider how many browser tabs, documents, and other programs the student is likely to use at once.

Check how long the exact device will receive support
Chromebooks: look up the model’s AUE date
Google identifies a Chromebook’s Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date as the most reliable way to gauge how long it will receive official updates. Look up the exact model in Google’s Chromebook update guidance before purchase. Google says Chromebook models released in 2021 or later receive ten years of updates; eligible older models may receive extended updates to a total of ten years. Google also notes that Android app developers may stop supporting apps over time, so the update horizon does not guarantee every app will remain compatible for the same period. Details on eligibility are in Google’s extended-updates guidance.

Windows: verify the edition and its support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. A used or discounted laptop still running Windows 10 should not be treated as a current long-term choice without separately confirming its support situation and upgrade eligibility.
Also check whether a Windows device comes with Windows 11 SE rather than a full Windows edition. Microsoft says support for Windows 11 SE—including software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes—ends in October 2026. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 SE overview. Microsoft’s education page also discusses Windows 10 support ending and education devices; edition and purchasing context matter: Microsoft Education.

A practical buying sequence
- Get the school’s policy. Confirm permitted operating systems, any device-management requirements, and whether the school recommends or supports particular models.
- List required software and accessories. Check each application’s supported operating system and hardware requirements with its publisher, and include exam tools, printers, adapters, or other peripherals the student needs.
- Rule out incompatible options. If a required tool needs Windows and has no supported ChromeOS or web version, prioritize a Windows laptop that meets the publisher’s requirements. If the school confirms ChromeOS works for the student’s workflow, a Chromebook remains a valid option.
- Check the exact model’s support horizon. For a Chromebook, find its AUE date. For Windows, identify the installed edition and confirm that it is supported for the intended period.
- Compare complete configurations and costs. Review RAM, storage, processor, display, keyboard, ports, weight, battery evidence, warranty, repair options, and the total price for the models actually available.
Make the decision by the student’s actual workload
Choose Windows 11 when verified school requirements or course software call for Windows desktop compatibility. Choose a Chromebook when the school supports ChromeOS, required work runs properly there, and the exact model has an acceptable update horizon. If both pass those checks, decide by comparing the specific devices’ configuration, total cost, portability, warranty, and support life—not by assuming that one category is universally better.
