Capture a webpage at a custom viewport size
Use Page.setViewportSize(width, height) to set the page’s viewport in pixels. Set it before navigation so the site can render its responsive layout at the intended dimensions.

}Replace the URL and dimensions with your target. The Playwright Java API describes width and height as integer pixel values. Its documentation warns that some sites do not expect phones to change size, so set the viewport before navigating. See the Java Page API.
Choose the right viewport scope
Set dimensions for one page
Call page.setViewportSize(width, height) when one page needs a particular size. This is useful when a test or capture needs a page-specific responsive layout.

Set a shared viewport for a browser context
To use consistent dimensions for pages created in the same context, set the viewport when creating that context:

Viewport is not the same as a mobile device
Changing viewport dimensions controls the visible layout area, but dimensions alone do not reproduce every device behavior. Playwright context emulation options also cover properties such as device scale factor, mobile behavior, user agent, touch, and screen size. Use those options when you need device-like behavior rather than a resized desktop viewport. The Java emulation guide describes the broader set of device settings.

The Page API notes that setViewportSize also resets screen size. If you need independent control of screen size and viewport, configure both through context options.

Choose image output and stabilization options
Save to a file or keep the bytes
Set setPath(Paths.get("screenshot.png")) to write the image to disk. If you omit the path, the screenshot call returns a byte[], which you can pass to other code for processing or storage.

The Page API supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output, and offers CSS-pixel and device-pixel scaling. Device-pixel output can be larger at high device scale factors. JPEG quality is configurable; PNG does not use the quality setting. Check the Page API for the options available in your installed Playwright version.

Reduce animation or page-specific variation
Screenshot options include disabling animations and applying a stylesheet. These can help make captures repeatable, but they do not replace site-specific readiness checks: decide what must load or settle on the page before capturing it.
Common problems and fixes
- The layout still looks like the wrong breakpoint: set the viewport before
navigate(). If it is a device emulation test, configure the relevant context properties as well as width and height. - The image shows only the visible portion: that is the default. Add
.setFullPage(true)when you need the scrollable document. - The element is missing or cut off: capture it with
page.locator(selector).screenshot(...)rather than a page screenshot; the locator screenshot scrolls the matched element into view. - The output dimensions or file size are unexpected: check the screenshot scale and the context’s device scale factor. Device-pixel scale can produce a larger image.
- Captures vary between runs: use an explicit viewport rather than relying on the host window, and configure animation handling or page-specific readiness as appropriate.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Full-page captures can produce substantially taller images than viewport captures, so choose them only when the entire document is needed. For repeatable output, explicitly set the viewport and avoid relying on host-window dimensions. Playwright’s documentation does not establish a universal capture-time or file-size figure; results depend on the page, its resources, and the chosen output settings.
