To run French-language talk radio on YouTube around the clock, send the programme audio through an encoder connected to YouTube Live Control Room, then plan for monitoring, network or encoder failures, and music rights. YouTube does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: a successful launch is only the start of the operating job.
What you need for a continuous radio-style YouTube stream
An encoder is the appropriate route for a radio-style production using external audio equipment or a more complex setup. YouTube supports both software and hardware encoders; it does not prescribe one for this use. Your audio chain feeds the encoder, and the encoder sends the stream to YouTube using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream.
- A microphone and, if needed, a mixer or audio interface to combine the presenter and playback sources.
- Headphones or another monitoring method so someone can hear the programme feed.
- An encoder-capable computer or hardware encoder, plus a reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity.
- A plan for monitoring and recovery, and the necessary rights for everything broadcast.
YouTube lists microphones, headphones, mixers and encoders as examples of equipment for professional streams; the right mixer or interface depends on the number and type of microphone inputs, playback routing, computer connection and monitoring outputs you need. A USB audio mixer is one option, not a requirement.
Check that the channel can livestream
Before assembling the show, verify the channel and enable live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the planned launch. YouTube also sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guide and its page on avoiding live-stream restrictions.

Build and test the audio chain
- Connect the microphone and playback sources. Route the presenter microphone and any music, recorded segments or remote contributions through a mixer or audio interface suited to your inputs. Avoid routing multiple versions of the same signal back into one another, which can create echo or feedback.
- Send the programme mix to the encoder. Select the intended mixer or interface input as the encoder’s audio source. For a talk-radio stream, check that speech is intelligible and that playback sources are audible without masking the presenter.
- Monitor the same feed viewers will hear. Listen through headphones or another monitoring output, and check the YouTube preview before going public. A meter moving in the encoder is not enough: it does not prove that the correct programme feed is reaching the public stream.
- Test changes before relying on them. Check microphone levels, transitions between speech and playback, silence, and any scheduled handovers. If a second presenter or remote guest joins, test that routing separately.
YouTube’s encoder guide describes connecting external equipment and setting up the encoder, but does not require one particular mixer layout or brand. Choose equipment for the inputs, routing and monitoring your station actually needs rather than assuming a particular product is necessary.
Create the YouTube stream and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or configure the live stream for the programme.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream.
- Choose the encoder’s audio input and any video input or stream presentation you plan to use. For audio-only radio, decide how the stream will be presented visually; do not assume the encoder can send audio without a compatible stream setup.
- Start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview. Confirm it is receiving the intended audio and that the levels, speech and playback sound right.
- Start the public broadcast only after the preview and the channel’s watch page show the correct programme. Check the result on a phone as well as the production setup.

Choose an encoder and backup approach

The choice is operational, not just technical: consider the cost of equipment, available connections, unattended restart behavior and who is responsible when the stream stops. YouTube recommends planning capacity for both primary and backup stream bitrates and testing encoder failover. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Protect a 24/7 stream from ordinary failures
Allow upload headroom
Measure outbound upload capacity rather than judging the connection by download speed. YouTube recommends upload capacity for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate, with 20% additional headroom. Treat that as YouTube’s operational guidance, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. Leave room for normal variation and other activity sharing the connection.

Test recovery before depending on it
- Run the primary encoder and confirm the public watch page receives the programme.
- Test the backup path by stopping the primary encoder and checking that the viewer-side stream recovers as intended.
- Check the channel’s public watch page on a phone or separate device, not only the encoder preview.
- Restore the primary setup and record who is responsible for restarting each component.
YouTube’s guidance recommends reliable network capacity, preview checks, failover testing and continued audio/video monitoring. For an unattended operation, turn those checks into a real routine: watch for lost encoder input, silence, network dropouts or playback that has stopped advancing, and decide who or what will restart the service. Then verify that recovery has returned an intelligible programme to the public watch page. This is an operating plan, not a YouTube promise of uninterrupted service.
Set a monitoring and escalation routine
Assign responsibility for checking the public feed and responding to alerts or listener reports. Define what counts as a failure—such as silence, a frozen programme, an encoder disconnect or a stream that no longer appears on the watch page—and the steps for restoring service. A computer that can encode a stream is not by itself a dependable unattended broadcast system.

Clear music and broadcast rights for the territory
Before going live, confirm that you have rights to all live content, including music. YouTube’s livestream terms put that responsibility on the provider, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers and other royalty participants, and require compliance with applicable regulatory requirements in the territory where the stream operates.
