Recommended Free Tools
Open your browser’s Developer Tools before reproducing the bug, keep the relevant Console message visible, then capture the page and error at a readable size. If the page and Console do not fit legibly in one image, attach separate screenshots and, when relevant, a Network log or sanitized HAR. Include the page URL, exact steps, expected and actual behavior, and your browser and operating system so someone else can reproduce the problem.
Capture the error while reproducing the bug
- Open the affected page and Developer Tools. Open DevTools before you reproduce the problem so the messages generated by the failure are available. In Edge, the Console is the default place for JavaScript and connectivity errors. Microsoft Edge Developer documentation describes its role. Firefox’s Web Console can show network requests, JavaScript, CSS, security messages, and messages logged by page scripts. See Mozilla Firefox Source Docs.
- Reproduce the issue using the steps you will report. Locate the relevant error or warning and keep it visible. Note the text and, if shown, the time or associated request; do not assume every Console message is the cause of the visible defect.
- Preserve network activity if a reload or navigation matters. In Edge, enable Preserve log in the Network tool before reloading or navigating so requests remain available across page loads. The control is documented in the Edge Network reference.
- Capture evidence at a readable size. Try a browser-window screenshot that includes both the broken page and the relevant Console message. If either becomes too small to read, take one screenshot of the page and another of the Console. Add a saved Network log or HAR only when it helps explain a request or navigation failure.
Choose the right screenshot and supporting evidence
| Evidence | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport screenshot | The visible failure and nearby controls are what need explanation. | Does not show content below the current viewport. |
| Full-page screenshot | The defect depends on layout or content elsewhere on the page. | May make small details, including text, harder to inspect. |
| Element screenshot | A particular component is the defect and surrounding page context is not essential. | Can omit the surrounding layout that helps explain the problem. |
| Console screenshot or saved log | A browser-reported error or warning is relevant to the bug. | Does not by itself show the page’s visible state. |
| Network log or HAR | A request, response, or page reload appears relevant. | May contain sensitive request details and needs review before sharing. |
Use the smallest set of attachments that makes the failure clear. A screenshot records visible state; the Console and Network tools expose different browser events. Do not shrink the page and Console into one unreadable image just to reduce attachment count.

Review privacy before sharing
Inspect every screenshot, log, and HAR before attaching it. An Edge HAR export can be sanitized by default to omit sensitive headers such as Cookie, Set-Cookie, and Authorization, but that does not make the entire file automatically safe. Check URLs, request data, visible account details, and other private information yourself. Remove or redact information you do not want to disclose while preserving enough detail to diagnose the issue.

Troubleshooting common capture problems
The error disappears after reloading
Open DevTools first and enable Preserve log in the Network tool if navigation or reload is part of the reproduction. Capture the page and Console after following the same steps that trigger the issue.
The page and Console are too small in one screenshot
Do not force both into a single image. Capture the visible failure and Console separately, and label or describe which error corresponds to the reproduction.

A full-page screenshot is unnecessary or hard to read
Use a viewport capture when the defect is visible in the current view, or capture the specific element in Firefox with Inspector’s “Screenshot Node.” Reserve full-page capture for bugs where wider page layout matters.
The HAR contains information you should not share
Review the exported file even if Edge sanitized it. Check request URLs and data as well as visible screenshots, and redact private details before attaching the files.
