Authenticate an authorized browser session, open the page, wait for the iframe’s actual content to appear, then use the browser automation library’s screenshot API. In Playwright, capture the page with page.screenshot(); use a frame locator only if you need to locate or interact with something inside the iframe. A screenshot captures rendered pixels, so you do not need to read or copy the iframe’s DOM to capture what is visible.
What changes when the private content is in an iframe?
An iframe is a separate document inside the page. If it comes from another origin, browser same-origin protections prevent ordinary page JavaScript from reading its document directly. That does not, by itself, prevent a browser screenshot from capturing the rendered page. Playwright provides frame-targeting APIs for selecting content inside a frame, and separate screenshot APIs for capturing the page or an element. Authentication is the first requirement: the browser context used for capture must have access to the private page. A top-level site login may not sign you into an embedded service. The iframe might rely on its own identity provider, cookies, or embedding rules, so check what the frame itself displays if the parent page appears signed in but the embedded content does not.
Capture the page with Playwright
This JavaScript example illustrates the API shape. Replace the URL, iframe selector, and readiness condition with ones appropriate to your authorized site. It is not a tested script; the correct login flow and selectors depend on the application.

Choose a stable selector and a condition that reflects the content you need. If the page has multiple matching frames or headings, make the locator more specific.
Sign in before capturing
Sign in through the site’s normal flow in the browser context that will take the screenshot, or load saved authentication state that you are authorized to use. Playwright documents reusing authentication state at its authentication guide. Treat saved state as a credential: keep it out of source control and restrict access. Sessions can expire; SSO, MFA, account policy, or site-specific bot controls may require a fresh interactive login.

Wait for the iframe’s content
A parent page reaching its load event does not guarantee that a client-rendered iframe has finished loading or reached its final state. Identify the frame using a stable selector or URL, then wait for a meaningful element or state inside it. The appropriate readiness condition is application-specific.

Choose the screenshot scope
- Viewport: Use a page screenshot without
fullPagewhen only the currently visible browser area matters. - Full page: Set
fullPage: truewhen you need content below the fold. Check the resulting image to confirm the embedded content appears as expected. - One element: Use a locator screenshot when a visible region is sufficient, for example

When to use a frame locator
Use page.frameLocator(...) when you need to select, wait for, or interact with an element inside an iframe. If all you need is an image of the rendered page, you can generally take a page screenshot without extracting the iframe’s DOM. For nested frames, target each level as needed and verify the actual output.
Browser screenshots are not the Screen Capture API
Playwright’s page and locator screenshot methods are browser automation features. They are distinct from the web platform’s Screen Capture API, which asks the browser to capture a display surface. If using that API from an iframe, the display-capture permission can be governed by the Permissions Policy header or the iframe’s allow attribute. See the Screen Capture API documentation. For an ordinary automated screenshot of a rendered page, start with the browser automation screenshot API instead.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect captures
- The screenshot shows a login page: Confirm that the session is valid in the same browser context used for capture and that redirects have completed. Check whether the embedded service requires separate authentication.
- The frame locator times out: Verify the iframe selector and URL, wait for the frame to attach, and wait for a specific in-frame element instead of assuming the parent page’s load event means the frame is ready.
- The screenshot omits the intended content: Check whether it is in a nested frame, below the viewport, or still loading. Try full-page capture for below-the-fold content, and inspect the output for a loading state or blocked-frame message.
- The in-page Screen Capture API is denied: If you are using that API inside an iframe, check the
display-capturepolicy permission and the iframe’sallowconfiguration. - The embedded site will not load: The host page or embedded service may restrict framing through mechanisms such as
frame-ancestorsorX-Frame-Options, or may apply cookie or origin restrictions. Check the service’s documentation or ask its administrator; the result depends on that site’s policy.

Can I screenshot a cross-origin iframe without reading its DOM?
Yes. A browser automation screenshot captures rendered pixels; cross-origin restrictions concern direct access to the iframe’s document, not the general need to extract its DOM for a visual capture.

Does logging into the parent page always sign me into its iframe?
No. An embedded service may require its own authentication or be subject to separate cookie and embedding policies.
