A YouTube playlist loop only repeats playback for someone watching; it does not keep an encoder-fed YouTube Live broadcast running. To cover a brief power cut, put the streaming computer and required network equipment on a suitably sized UPS. To recover after a longer outage, configure and test how your computer and encoder restart and reconnect—YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings do not restore power or relaunch an encoder.
First, identify what you mean by “playlist”
YouTube has two different things that can sound like a playlist. A playlist on a watch page is a viewer-side sequence of videos. YouTube’s loop control repeats that playback on the viewer’s device; it does not send a live broadcast or restart a failed stream. YouTube’s playlist-loop instructions concern playback, not creator-side power recovery.

If you mean a sequence of prerecorded videos being sent continuously to YouTube Live, an encoder must send the video to YouTube. The stream depends on that encoder and its internet connection continuing to work. If power fails and the computer or network equipment shuts down, the broadcast can stop even if a viewer has a playlist open.

What can keep the broadcast going through a brief outage?
Put the streaming setup on a UPS
A UPS can temporarily power the streaming computer and the network equipment it needs, such as the modem and router. Connect the equipment required for the stream—not just the computer—and size the UPS for their combined electrical load and the runtime you need. Runtime varies with the UPS, the connected equipment and its actual power draw, so check the manufacturer’s specifications and test your own setup rather than assuming a particular number of minutes.

A UPS only bridges a local power interruption while its battery lasts. It cannot keep the stream online indefinitely, and it does not solve an independent internet outage. If the internet connection drops, the feed can still be interrupted even while the equipment has power. The OBS forum discussion about UPS use and reboot recovery is anecdotal, not a specification for UPS runtime or a guarantee that an encoder will resume.
Test the whole chain
Test with the same computer, network devices and encoder configuration you intend to rely on. Confirm that the UPS powers the necessary equipment, that the stream remains available during a brief simulated interruption, and that you can still monitor the broadcast. A test of the UPS alone does not establish that the internet connection or YouTube stream will remain uninterrupted.

How to recover after a longer outage or shutdown
After a full shutdown, power returning is only the first step. The computer must start, the encoder must launch with the right configuration, and the broadcast must connect again. The exact steps depend on your operating system, encoder and stream setup; there is no universal YouTube procedure that guarantees a computer and encoder will reboot and resume automatically.

Set up the broadcast and configure the encoder to send to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. YouTube documents the encoder workflow in its guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Keep the stream key secure and available to the intended encoder. You may need it when configuring or restoring the encoder. Treat it as a credential; do not publish or share it casually. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers stream keys, URLs and broadcast controls.
- Check auto-start and auto-stop choices. These settings govern parts of the broadcast workflow. YouTube explains: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” They do not power on a failed computer or ensure that an encoder application launches after a reboot.
- Test the computer and encoder’s recovery behavior. Check how your particular system starts after power is restored and whether the encoder returns to the intended stream. If you configure startup automation, validate the complete sequence on your own system; exact OS and encoder steps cannot be assumed for every setup.
- Verify the live result. After a recovery test, check the public watch page and the stream’s health rather than assuming that a running computer means the broadcast is live. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing encoder failover in its live-streaming tips.
Add redundancy where the consequences justify it
A UPS, post-outage startup automation and a backup encoder address different failure points. A UPS helps with a brief local power cut; startup automation may help after power returns but must be tested on the specific computer and encoder; a backup encoder or internet route can add redundancy but needs its own validated failover design. None of these should be treated as proven simply because it has been configured.

YouTube recommends testing encoder failover. One documented test is to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then check whether the player switches to the backup encoder. Follow YouTube’s encoder testing and monitoring guidance and confirm the behavior in your own broadcast before relying on it.
Protect the recording, even if the stream stops
A recording can preserve content that would otherwise be lost, but it does not keep a broadcast live. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends a local backup: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” See YouTube’s archive guidance and the encoder setup guide.

For long broadcasts, plan a local recording workflow rather than relying on YouTube’s archive alone. Keep in mind that a local file is useful for recovery of content, not for restoring the interrupted live session.

Playlist looping repeats videos for a viewer, while DVR lets viewers pause and resume a live stream when that feature is available. Neither control restarts a powered-off encoder. YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; see Turn on DVR on live streams.
