Use Playwright’s page.screenshot() method and give the output a .jpg or .jpeg filename. To make the format explicit, set type: 'jpeg' as well. The examples below use Node.js.
Save a Playwright screenshot as a JPEG
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser if they are not already available in your project:

Choose the capture and output options
JPEG format and filename
Setting type: 'jpeg' explicitly selects JPEG. Playwright can also infer the format from the filename extension, so path: 'screenshot.jpg' or path: 'screenshot.jpeg' is sufficient to select JPEG. If neither the extension nor type determines a format, Playwright defaults to PNG.
Quality
JPEG quality accepts values from 0 to 100; higher values generally retain more image detail and create larger files. The documented default is 80. The example uses 85 only as an illustrative setting, not a required value. The quality option does not apply to PNG.

Viewport or full page
By default, Playwright captures the visible viewport. Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page. A full-page image can be much taller and larger than a viewport capture.

Write a file or use the image bytes
When you provide path, Playwright writes the screenshot to that file. Without path, the method returns a Buffer containing the image bytes, which you can pass to other code or save yourself:

Transparency and image dimensions
JPEG does not support transparency, so omitBackground does not provide transparent JPEG output. If transparency matters, choose an image format that supports it rather than JPEG. The screenshot scale option can capture at CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale; device-pixel output on a high-DPI device contains more pixels and may produce a larger file.

The example navigates to the page before taking the screenshot. For pages that continue rendering after navigation, wait for the specific content you need rather than assuming the initial load means every visual element is ready:

This does not guarantee that every animation, delayed image, or third-party widget has finished; a page-specific readiness condition may be necessary for a reliable capture.

- The file is PNG instead of JPEG: Use a
.jpgor.jpegpath, or settype: 'jpeg'. Setting both makes the intended format unambiguous. - The screenshot only shows the top part of the page: The default is viewport capture. Set
fullPage: truefor the full scrollable page. - The saved image has an unexpected background: JPEG cannot preserve transparency. Use a transparency-capable format if you need a transparent background.
- The page looks incomplete: Wait for the relevant selector or other page-specific readiness condition before calling
screenshot(). - The image differs between runs: Rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For visual tests, keep the environment consistent. Playwright’s screenshot assertion workflow repeats captures until two consecutive screenshots match; see the visual comparisons documentation.
