Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To update a website thumbnail when a page changes, first identify which thumbnail you mean. Social link previews usually come from the page’s Open Graph metadata, especially og:image; a generated-image service or screenshot can supply that image. Search-result images follow a separate process. For automatic updates, make the image depend on the page content that changes, publish the correct image URL in the page metadata, and account for both image-service and platform caches. Updating a page alone does not guarantee that an old social preview will refresh immediately.
Identify which thumbnail is stale
“Website thumbnail” can mean several different images. Diagnose the affected layer before changing settings:
- A social or messaging preview: the card shown when someone shares a page link. It commonly uses the page’s
og:imagemetadata, but the social platform may retain its own cached copy. - A generated Open Graph image: an image-rendering service creates a card from a template, page metadata, or other inputs. That service may cache its source data or rendered output.
- A screenshot-based image: a service captures the rendered page. Its cache and the destination platform’s cache are separate.
- A CMS or theme image: the featured image or a site-wide fallback may determine the metadata image.
- A Google Search result image: this is not the same cache as a social preview; Google’s crawl and eligibility processes apply.
Check the image directly, then inspect the page’s crawler-facing HTML and the preview shown by the destination platform. This helps distinguish a wrong source image from a stale service render or stale platform card.
Choose an update strategy
| What should the thumbnail reflect? | Practical approach | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|
| A stable, representative image | Set the page’s featured or social-sharing image and verify the published Open Graph tags. | Theme and page-level settings can take precedence over a site-wide fallback. |
| Changing page data, such as a title or price | Use a generated Open Graph template whose inputs include the changing values. | A refresh cannot produce a meaningfully new render if its effective inputs have not changed. |
| The visible page itself | Use a screenshot-based image workflow and make sure it captures after relevant content has loaded. | Both the screenshot service and sharing platform can cache the result. |
| An already-shared link still shows old content | After fixing the source, request a re-scrape through the platform’s inspection tool if one is available. | Inspection tools request a check; they do not guarantee immediate updates to every existing post or client. |
| A Google result has an outdated image | Use the appropriate Search Console recrawl process if you own the site, or Google’s outdated-content process where eligible. | These are search-result workflows, not social-card cache controls. |
Make the page publish the intended image
Check CMS precedence
CMS behavior varies. WordPress.com automatically adds og:title, og:description, and og:image to posts and pages. It normally uses the featured image and checks other image sources when one is absent. Shopify documents a different order: theme-code images first, then theme settings, then the Online Store Preferences image as a fallback. Changing a fallback will not help if a higher-priority page or theme setting supplies another image.

Inspect the crawler-facing response
- Open the published page and inspect its server-rendered HTML source, focusing on the
<head>. - Find
og:imageand confirm its URL points to the intended asset. Also checkog:titleandog:descriptionif those card fields are stale. - Look for duplicate Open Graph tags or competing service-specific tags. A browser view that depends on client-side JavaScript may not match what a crawler receives.
- Open the image URL directly and confirm that it is reachable and returns the current image.
WordPress.com’s general social-image recommendations are 1200 × 630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio, JPG or PNG, and under 5 MB. These are recommendations from WordPress.com, not universal guarantees for every platform. Keep important text and subjects near the center to reduce the impact of cropping.
Automate generated images and screenshots
Make changes part of the image inputs
If a template-generated card should change when the page changes, feed the relevant changing fields into its inputs. If the page’s visual content changes but the extracted metadata does not, the renderer may have no reason to generate a new image. The image service’s documented invalidation or versioning mechanism matters in that case.

For its OG Image Config workflow, HTML/CSS to Image documents a default source-metadata refresh interval of 24 hours; minimum intervals depend on plan. It can serve the previous image while a background refresh runs, with refreshed inputs used on a later request. Source Cache-Control or Expires freshness can delay the next check beyond the configured interval. This is a service-specific default, not a universal thumbnail update schedule.
HTML/CSS to Image documents a numeric hcti:content_version meta value for cases where render-relevant content changes without a metadata change. Increase the integer when that content changes. For this workflow, its documentation says query strings do not change the configured image identity, so do not assume that appending ?v=2 invalidates the image. Other services may handle versioning differently; use their documented mechanism.

Automate the trigger and destination
A complete automatic workflow needs more than a renderer. Decide what event triggers an update—such as publishing a page edit or changing a data record—then update the render inputs or version, generate or refresh the image, and ensure the page’s og:image points to the image that should be shared. If the image URL remains the same, confirm that the renderer and platform can detect changed image bytes or use a supported content-version mechanism.
For screenshot-based cards, capture after the page’s relevant content has loaded; a capture taken before client-rendered content appears can faithfully preserve an incomplete page. Services such as Microlink describe using screenshot APIs as og:image sources for page-level cards, but the screenshot service and social platform may each cache independently.

Refresh the social platform after fixing the source
Once the page tags and direct image are correct, ask the destination platform to inspect the link again where that option exists. WordPress.com’s support guidance recommends Facebook’s Sharing Debugger and its “Scrape Again” action for Facebook and WhatsApp previews, and points to LinkedIn’s Post Inspector. It says X re-indexes card tags roughly every seven days; treat that as an approximate interval stated by WordPress.com, not a guarantee for every post or account.
Shopify also recommends Facebook’s Sharing Debugger after changing a social image. A re-scrape requests a platform-side check. It does not ensure that every previously published card, messaging client, or downstream cache changes at once.

Google Search imagery is not refreshed through Facebook’s, LinkedIn’s, or messaging apps’ preview tools. Google says site owners can request a recrawl through Search Console. Its Refresh Outdated Content tool is for results where a page or image is gone or significantly different, not a general way to recrawl live, unchanged material. Shopify also advises resubmitting a sitemap if a search-result image remains outdated after a change in its admin. Search display and timing remain subject to Google’s crawling and eligibility processes.
Troubleshoot a thumbnail that will not update
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The shared card shows the wrong image from the start | The published metadata points elsewhere, or a CMS theme/page setting overrides the fallback. | Inspect the rendered og:image and check the CMS image precedence for that page. |
| The browser shows the new image, but the crawler sees the old one | The crawler-facing server response may differ from the browser’s client-rendered view. | Inspect the server-rendered <head> and the image URL without relying on post-load JavaScript. |
| The page tags changed but the generated image did not | The image service may still use cached source metadata, or its effective inputs did not change. | Check the service’s refresh interval, source cache headers, and documented versioning method. |
| The image URL is current but a social card is old | The destination platform may have cached its earlier preview. | Use that platform’s inspection or re-scrape tool when available, then verify the resulting preview. |
| The screenshot misses content or captures a loading state | The capture occurred before the relevant page content finished loading. | Configure the capture workflow to wait for the needed content or page state before taking the screenshot. |
| A Google result is still old after a social preview refresh | Google Search has a separate crawl and update process. | Use Search Console if you own the site and follow Google’s eligibility rules for outdated-content requests. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can capture a page image; you can use a scheduled or page-update workflow to request a fresh capture, then publish the resulting image URL in your page metadata. This one-off API call returns an image file, so it does not by itself edit your CMS metadata or force a social platform to refresh its cache.
Example using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing the page automatically update every old social preview?
No. The page, image service, and destination platform can each retain cached content, and platform refresh controls do not guarantee that every existing card updates immediately.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does adding a version query string always refresh a generated image?
No. Cache identity rules are service-specific. For HTML/CSS to Image’s OG Image Config workflow, its documentation says query strings do not change image identity; it documents increasing the numeric hcti:content_version instead.
