Generate the screenshot with Playwright’s page.screenshot(), set the Express response’s Content-Type to match the image, and send the returned Buffer with res.send(). For a PNG, use res.type('png'). This keeps the image in memory instead of writing a temporary file first. The example below is a documentation-based pattern; confirm it with the Playwright and Express versions installed in your project.
Return the screenshot Buffer directly
Playwright’s Page API returns screenshot data when you call page.screenshot() without a file path. Express’s response API accepts a Buffer in res.send(). Set the response type first: Express otherwise labels a Buffer application/octet-stream, which does not identify the payload as a PNG image.

});This route assumes page has already been created and is available to the handler. It sends binary PNG bytes, not JSON or a URL to an image file. The res.type('png') call sets the MIME type to image/png.
Wire the route into your application
The route needs a Playwright page that has navigated to the page you want to capture. The following example shows the pieces together, with a browser and page created for each request so their ownership and cleanup are explicit. It uses the installed Playwright package and Express 4.x response and routing APIs documented in the linked sources; it is not an independently tested deployment recipe.

/screenshotroute. Replace the example target URL with an allowed URL or, preferably, a URL selected by your application rather than passed through unchecked from a caller. -
Launch the browser, create a page, navigate, capture the PNG Buffer, and send it with the PNG Content-Type.

Close the page and browser when finished. If your application instead shares a browser or uses a worker pool, manage that lifecycle at the application level rather than closing shared resources inside a request.

Launching a browser for every request is a simple way to show ownership, but the documentation cited here does not establish that it is the best choice for a particular workload. A shared browser, per-request page, or worker pool has different concurrency and cleanup implications.
Choose a response format and delivery method
Send bytes when the caller needs the image response
For a direct image response, omit the screenshot path option, set the matching type, and send the Buffer. This avoids creating a file solely to transmit it. Keep the Content-Type aligned with the actual encoding; the example uses PNG and image/png.

Save and transfer a file when the workflow needs one
Playwright’s screenshot API also supports a path option. Use it when the application needs a file artifact, then send that file with Express’s res.sendFile(). This is a filesystem transfer, not an automatic in-memory response. Construct paths securely, consider cleanup, and use Express’s root option to constrain relative paths when appropriate. See the Express response documentation for sendFile() behavior.

});Do not build an arbitrary filesystem path from an untrusted request parameter. If multiple requests can write artifacts, also ensure their filenames cannot collide and decide when saved files are removed.
Complete the response and handle errors safely
An Express route must send or end its response; otherwise the request can remain open. The direct Buffer example completes it with res.send(). Passing an error to next(error) delegates handling to Express’s error flow, as described in the routing guide.

An error can occur after response headers or some response data have already been written. In that case, do not try to send a second normal response; Express’s error-handling guide explains why errors after writing require special care. Keep the route’s error handling compatible with any middleware your application uses, and ensure a failed capture does not leave browser resources open.

The request hangs. Check that every successful route path sends or ends the response, and that errors reach error-handling middleware. A route that neither responds nor forwards an error can leave the request open.

An error handler reports headers already sent. The route may have started its response before a later failure. Avoid attempting to send another response after that point; follow the Express error-handling guidance for errors after response writing.

A saved-file response fails or exposes the wrong file. Verify that the file exists and that the route constructs its path safely. Use a constrained root for relative paths where suitable, and do not let callers choose unrestricted filesystem paths.

Requests interfere with one another or browser processes remain open. Review who owns the browser and page, how concurrent requests receive pages, and which component closes shared resources. The right lifecycle depends on the application; the screenshot and Express API references do not prescribe a universal pooling design.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The in-memory approach avoids writing a temporary image just to return it, while the file approach can serve workflows that need a persistent artifact. Neither the cited API documentation nor the example establishes a response-time benchmark, a safe concurrency limit, a deployment’s ability to run browser processes, or a suitable image-size policy. Check those against your host, installed package versions, and application requirements before exposing a capture endpoint publicly.
If callers can influence the target URL, validate or allowlist destinations and apply your own access controls. The example deliberately uses a fixed target rather than accepting an arbitrary URL, because unrestricted URL capture can expose infrastructure that should not be reachable from a public endpoint.
