Scroll through the page first, then take a full-page screenshot. A full-page capture records the page’s scrollable extent, but it does not necessarily scroll the visible viewport to trigger images, sections, or other content that loads only when it comes into view. In Playwright, the capture call is await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });; the important extra step is the scroll pass before it.
Why a full-page screenshot can still miss lazy-loaded content
Playwright defines a full-page screenshot as capturing the full scrollable page as if it were a very tall screen. That describes the image’s extent, not a simulated visit to every part of the page. Some sites load images or iframes, reveal sections, or request more items only after scrolling makes them visible. If the viewport never reaches those areas, a screenshot can finish successfully while those elements remain unloaded or hidden. Playwright’s screenshot documentation explains full-page capture; a Playwright feature request discusses scroll-triggered content and proposes an option to load it. That proposal is not evidence that such an option is part of Playwright.

Use a scroll-first workflow for a finite page
- Open the page and wait for a suitable initial state. Choose a navigation readiness event appropriate to the page, then identify a page-specific sign that the content you need is ready. Playwright discourages treating
networkidleas a general readiness test; an assertion about expected content is more useful. See Playwright’s Page API documentation. - Scroll through the document. Move the viewport down in increments so the next areas enter view. Allow the site’s requests and rendering to proceed. Some pages extend as you reach the bottom, so repeat the pass as needed. There is no single scroll distance or wait time that works for every site.
- Wait for evidence, not just elapsed time. If you know the last expected image, section, or item, wait for it to appear or become visible before capturing. A fixed delay can be a fallback, but it cannot prove that every component has finished loading.
- Capture the full page. Use Playwright’s documented full-page screenshot option after the scroll pass.
- Inspect the output below the fold. Confirm that expected images and sections are actually present. A successful screenshot call alone does not establish that scroll-triggered content loaded.
Runnable Playwright example in JavaScript
This example performs a bounded scroll pass, then captures the page. Replace url and, where possible, replace the short delay with a condition for the target site’s expected content. The loop is a starting pattern, not a universal lazy-load detector: some pages need smaller scroll steps, some append content later, and some have no stable end. The 20-pass cap keeps an endlessly growing feed from looping indefinitely.

const url = 'https://example.com';
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
let previousHeight = 0;
for (let pass = 0; pass < 20; pass++) {
const height = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
if (height === previousHeight) break;
previousHeight = height;
await page.evaluate(() => window.scrollTo(0, document.documentElement.scrollHeight));
// Prefer a page-specific visibility or load condition when one is available.
await page.waitForTimeout(500);
}
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
The JavaScript capture call follows Playwright’s screenshots API. The delay and loop conditions are illustrative; adapt them to the page rather than assuming a stable document height means all content has loaded.

Python capture call
After navigating, scrolling, and waiting for the target content using the same principles, Playwright’s Python API uses full_page=True:
page.screenshot(path="page.png", full_page=True)
Use an explicit content condition when available, and inspect the saved image. The Python parameter name differs from JavaScript’s fullPage; the documented APIs are at Playwright Screenshots.

Choose a capture strategy for the page structure
| Page behavior | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Finite document with ordinary lazy-loaded images or sections | Scroll through the document, wait for expected content, then take one full-page screenshot. | Visibility-triggered content needs an opportunity to enter view before capture. |
| Virtualized list or feed | Capture successive viewport segments while advancing through the list, or use the site’s export if record completeness matters. | A virtualizer may remove off-screen rows from the DOM, so one tall image may not contain every item. |
| Content inside a nested scroll panel | Identify the element that owns scrolling and scroll that panel; test the current target’s behavior. | Scrolling the document does not necessarily move an inner panel. A 2022 Playwright issue report described incomplete full-page capture for a non-body scrolling element in Playwright 1.20.0; that historical report is not proof of a current universal limitation. |
| Infinite feed | Define a stopping point, such as a known item or a bounded number of results, and capture segments as needed. | An endless feed has no finite full-page endpoint. |
Account for visual changes caused by scrolling
Scrolling can trigger animations, reveal effects, or other state changes. If the screenshot must represent a particular initial state, decide what state should be preserved and compare it with the page after the scroll pass. The Playwright feature request notes that automatically scrolling can change page state; its proposed behavior is a request, not a documented built-in option.

- Images are blank below the fold: confirm the viewport actually reached their area, then wait for the image or its loaded state before capture. A full-page flag does not itself trigger visibility-based loading.
- The screenshot ends before later items appear: check whether the page height grows as you scroll. Repeat the pass or wait for a known final item; do not rely on one fixed delay as proof of completion.
- Earlier rows are absent from a long list: the page may virtualize rows and keep only nearby items rendered. Capture consecutive viewport segments or use an export when completeness is important.
- An inner panel remains unchanged: inspect which element has the scroll position and scroll that container rather than only calling
window.scrollTo. The 2022 report applies to Playwright 1.20.0 and should be treated as a historical, version-specific example. - The page never reaches a stable height: it may load indefinitely or append items in response to scrolling. Set a meaningful stopping condition and a pass cap instead of waiting for a universal “done” state.
- The output looks different after scrolling: inspect for scroll-triggered animation or state changes, and decide whether the desired capture is the initial state or the post-scroll state.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request takes a screenshot; use it when you want a capture without writing and maintaining the browser scroll workflow. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
Example request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. This one-call example does not claim to reproduce a site-specific scroll pass; if completeness depends on scrolling or a virtualized feed, use the workflow above and verify the result.

Is a 500 ms wait enough for lazy-loaded content?
Not necessarily. It is only an example delay; wait for a page-specific content or visibility condition when possible.
Will one full-page screenshot include every item in a virtualized feed?
Not reliably. Virtualized feeds may keep only nearby rows rendered, so use sequential viewport captures or an appropriate site export when you need all records.
