Choose Puppeteer for Chrome-centered automation, particularly when its API and ecosystem fit your project. Either way, the hard part is usually deciding when the page is ready to capture—not calling the screenshot method.

The Playwright migration guide includes equivalent navigation-and-screenshot examples in both libraries, so this is a choice of browser coverage, workflow, and setup—not a capability gap. [Playwright migration guide]
Which one should you use?
Choose Playwright when browser coverage or test ergonomics matter
- You need to check captures in WebKit as well as Chromium or Firefox.
- You want locators and retrying, web-first assertions for testing page state before capture.
- You value a first-party test runner alongside browser automation.
Choose Puppeteer for a Chrome-centered setup
- Your workflow targets Chrome and Puppeteer’s direct browser API or existing ecosystem suits the project.
- You want Puppeteer to install a compatible Chrome build by default, and your package manager permits its install setup.
- You already manage a browser or connect to a remote browser; in that case, evaluate
puppeteer-core.
These recommendations follow documented capabilities, not a comparative speed or reliability test. The official documentation reviewed does not establish that one library is inherently faster, more reliable, or better at bypassing a particular site’s anti-bot checks.
Capture only after the page reaches the state you need
JavaScript-heavy pages often render content after the initial navigation event. A screenshot taken too early may be valid as an image but still show a loading skeleton, incomplete results, or a transient overlay. Pick a readiness signal tied to the content you need: for example, wait for a known result container or a page-specific status change, then capture. Playwright’s locator and assertion tools can help express that condition; Puppeteer can also wait for page conditions. There is no universal wait setting that guarantees the right state on every site.

Playwright’s migration sample uses waitUntil: 'networkidle', while noting that explicit waits are often unnecessary in its auto-waiting workflow. Network idle is not automatically the right signal for a page that polls continuously, keeps analytics requests open, or renders content after requests finish. Select a condition based on the page’s behavior rather than adding a fixed delay by default. [Playwright migration guide]
Install and capture a screenshot
The following minimal examples use JavaScript modules, navigate to a page, and save a full-page PNG. Replace the example URL with the page you are authorized to capture. For an application with delayed rendering, add a page-specific readiness condition before the screenshot call.

Setup and troubleshooting
Playwright reports that a browser executable is missing
Install the browser binary matching the installed Playwright version with npx playwright install chromium (or the engine you use). If you upgraded Playwright, rerun the install command because supported browser versions change with Playwright releases. [Playwright browser documentation]
Puppeteer launches without its expected Chrome
Check whether the package manager blocked install scripts. If it did, use npx puppeteer browsers install to install the browser manually. With puppeteer-core, configure a browser you manage; that package does not download Chrome. [Puppeteer installation guide]

The screenshot is blank or shows an incomplete page
Navigation completing does not prove that the page’s meaningful JavaScript-rendered content is ready. Inspect the page’s actual render flow and wait for a specific element or state that indicates the content you need is present. Avoid treating a generic delay or network-idle state as a universal fix.
The script waits indefinitely
A page may keep network requests active or never produce the condition your script expects. Reconsider the readiness condition: wait for the target content rather than every request to finish, and ensure the selector or state exists in the version of the page being captured. Keep navigation and wait timeouts bounded in production so a single stalled page does not hold a job indefinitely.
Which one is faster or more reliable?
The official sources cited here do not provide a controlled, same-page benchmark of these libraries on JavaScript-heavy screenshot tasks. Performance, memory use, and behavior against a particular site’s bot checks depend on the workload and environment; test your own target pages rather than inferring a winner from the feature lists.
