Make a one-shot screenshot request with Python
Browserless documents its Screenshot API as a POST request to /screenshot, with the API token in the token query parameter and the URL and optional screenshot settings in a JSON body. Its documentation describes the workflow as sending a POST request with a URL and optional Puppeteer-style screenshot options. See the Browserless Screenshot API and its Python walkthrough.

Install the dependency

Store your token outside the script
Set an environment variable named BROWSERLESS_TOKEN to your Browserless API token. For example, in a Unix-like shell, run export BROWSERLESS_TOKEN='your-token'. Keep the token private and do not commit it to source control.

The endpoint, token parameter, JSON shape, full-page option, PNG type, and saving response bytes follow Browserless’s documentation. The timeout and raise_for_status() are defensive Python choices: the timeout bounds how long the request waits, while raise_for_status() makes HTTP error responses visible instead of silently saving them as an image.

Run the script with Python, then open screenshot.png and confirm that it contains the expected page. The API returns image bytes; the requested output type controls the image format.
Choose REST or a connected browser session
Use REST when the task is one capture of a URL and the page does not need a sequence of scripted interactions first. Browserless describes its REST APIs as single browser tasks without requiring you to manage browser infrastructure. Adjust the capture to fit the page
Capture the whole page or a region
- Set
options.fullPagetotrueto capture beyond the initially visible viewport. - Use the top-level
selectorfield when the target is a particular page element. - Use
options.clipwhen you need a fixed rectangular region instead of a full page or selected element.

Handle lazy-loaded content
Some pages create images or other content only when those sections are scrolled into view. Browserless documents scrollPage: true to trigger loading; pair it with full-page capture when you need the content across the full document. If elements remain absent, first check whether the page loads them only after additional interaction or a longer wait.
Choose an output format
Set options.type to a supported format such as png, jpeg, or webp. Make the output filename extension match the selected type so downstream tools do not mistake the file format.

Wait only as much as the page needs
The API reference documents wait controls for events, functions, selectors, or timeouts, as well as navigation options and request or resource filtering. Start with the smallest relevant wait: for example, wait for a specific selector if the screenshot depends on that element. A fixed delay can be useful for a known delayed render, but it adds time even when the page is already ready. Use the API reference for exact option names and request placement.

A successful HTTP response does not prove that the desired page content appeared. The screenshot endpoint can only render what its browser can access, so inspect the saved image as part of the workflow.

Do not treat a CAPTCHA or an access-denied page as a successful screenshot of the intended content. Browserless’s API documentation discusses blocking and the limits of its unblocking endpoint.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I send HTML instead of a page URL to Browserless?
Yes. Browserless documents rendering provided HTML, but its API reference cautions not to send html and url together in the same request.
Does Browserless guarantee it can capture a page behind a CAPTCHA?
No. A CAPTCHA or access-denied response can indicate that the target is blocking automation; the documented /unblock endpoint applies to certain cases, not universally.
