How to Screenshot a Lazy-Loaded WordPress Page After Scrolling

A full-page screenshot may miss content that depends on real scrolling. Learn how to scroll a WordPress page first, verify images, and automate a reliable capture with Playwright.

To capture a long WordPress page with its below-the-fold images, scroll down through the page in increments, pause for the content you need to load, then take a full-page screenshot. A full-page capture covers the document, but it may not trigger code that waits for real scrolling or for an element to enter the viewport.

Why images can be missing from a full-page screenshot

“Below the fold” means outside the browser’s initial viewport. Lazy loading defers offscreen images or other content until they are near or within the viewport. WordPress 5.5 introduced native HTML loading="lazy" for images by default; it is a browser loading behavior, not a WordPress screenshot feature. Some themes or plugins may also use JavaScript to load content as it enters the viewport.

A screenshot tool that expands the capture to the full page does not necessarily scroll through the page as a person would. As a result, scripts that depend on actual scrolling or viewport intersection may not run before capture. Google Search Central describes viewport visibility as relevant to lazy-loaded content and notes that its documented methods do not rely on user scrolling or clicking; that crawlability guidance is useful context, but it is not a guarantee about how a particular screenshot tool or WordPress site behaves. Manual method: scroll first, then capture

  1. Open the published page. Wait for its initial content to settle rather than capturing immediately after navigation.
  2. Scroll down in increments. Move through the parts of the page that must appear in the screenshot. This gives viewport-based loading code a chance to run.
  3. Pause when needed. Give images or sections time to appear. If one remains blank, inspect that image or section directly; the rest of the page being visible does not prove it has loaded.
  4. Capture the full page. Use the browser’s full-page screenshot option if available. Browser menu names and built-in features vary, so check the documentation for your browser and version rather than relying on a universal menu path.
  5. Inspect the saved image. Check for missing images, unfinished sections, or sticky headers repeated in the output. If something is absent, revisit the relevant page area and wait for it to load before capturing again.

There is no universal scroll increment or wait duration: page scripts, network speed, browser engine, and the content itself all affect readiness.

Automate the capture with Playwright

Playwright’s fullPage screenshot option captures the scrollable page and defaults to false. Its documentation also describes viewport and element screenshots. Because a full-page capture alone may not trigger scroll-dependent loading, scroll through the page first and wait for the content you care about.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1365, height: 900 } });

  try {
    await page.goto('https://example.com/wordpress-page/', {
      waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',

    // Scroll by viewport-sized steps so scroll- and intersection-triggered
    // content has a chance to load. Stop at the document's current bottom.
    await page.evaluate(async () => {
      const step = Math.max(300, window.innerHeight * 0.8);
      let previousHeight = 0;

      while (true) {
        const height = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
        if (window.scrollY + window.innerHeight >= height) break;
        window.scrollBy(0, step);
        await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 250));
        if (height === previousHeight && window.scrollY + window.innerHeight >= document.documentElement.scrollHeight) break;
        previousHeight = height;
      }
    });

    // Prefer a page-specific readiness condition over assuming every image
    // will be ready after a fixed delay.
    await page.locator('.article-content img:last-of-type').waitFor({
      state: 'visible',
      timeout: 15000,
    });
    await page.locator('.article-content img:last-of-type').evaluate(img => {
      if (img.complete && img.naturalWidth > 0) return;
      return new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
        img.addEventListener('load', resolve, { once: true });
        img.addEventListener('error', () => reject(new Error('Image failed to load')), { once: true });
      });
    });

    await page.screenshot({ path: 'wordpress-page.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Run it with:

node screenshot.js

Replace .article-content img:last-of-type with a selector that actually identifies the content you need. If the target is a section rather than an image, wait for that section to be visible, and add a page-specific condition that confirms it is complete. A visibility check alone does not prove that an image has finished downloading; the example also checks its load state. For pages that add content dynamically as you scroll, the loop checks the changing document height while moving down, but the page’s own behavior may require adjusting the readiness condition or scroll timing.

Choose the screenshot scope

Capture type Use it when Playwright example
Viewport You need only what is currently visible in the browser window. await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' });
Full page You need the entire scrollable document in one image. await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
Element You need a specific component, such as an article body or image gallery. await page.locator('.article-content').screenshot({ path: 'article.png' });

These capture scopes describe what gets included in the output; they do not replace the scrolling and readiness checks needed to activate or confirm deferred content. Playwright screenshot documentation

Troubleshoot missing content

  • The screenshot has blank image areas: Scroll to the affected images and check whether they appear in the browser. Wait for their load state or for a relevant page-specific signal before capturing.
  • The full-page image is short or cuts off content: The page may add content as you reach the bottom. Scroll again after the document grows, and make the automation wait for the content that marks completion.
  • A fixed pause works sometimes but not reliably: Replace it where feasible with a condition tied to the target image or section. A single delay cannot account for every network and site script.
  • The target selector times out: Confirm that the selector matches an element on the published page, not just in the WordPress editor. Check whether the content is inserted only after scrolling or is absent from that page.
  • Sticky elements repeat or overlap: Inspect the final image and decide whether the repeated element is acceptable for the capture. Page-specific styling may need adjustment; the documented full-page option does not establish a universal fix for sticky headers.

ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one GET request. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and whether the request was billed. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients.
