A cloud service may keep your video looping on its own servers, but that does not guarantee YouTube will remain continuously live when you reset the stream key. YouTube’s documented recovery is to copy the new key and update the encoder; depending on the service, that may mean reconnecting and could interrupt the live event.
What happens when you reset a YouTube stream key?
A stream key is the credential an encoder uses, along with the YouTube Live server URL, to send a feed to YouTube. YouTube describes it as similar to a stream’s password and address. YouTube’s reset instructions tell the channel owner or manager to open Stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, reset the key, copy the newly generated key, and update the encoder software. Editors and viewers cannot reset the key. If a third-party encoder cannot start, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance likewise recommends getting a new key and updating the encoder. They are separate things. Your source video may continue playing in a cloud service while its connection to YouTube is interrupted. But YouTube’s published instructions do not promise that a live event stays uninterrupted after a key reset, or that a cloud encoder will automatically receive the replacement key and resume the same event.

Whether there is a gap—and whether reconnection resumes the existing scheduled or live event rather than starting another—depends on the provider’s credential and reconnection workflow. Do not treat “the video keeps looping in the cloud” as proof that viewers will see an uninterrupted YouTube stream.
How to reset the key with the least avoidable disruption
- Confirm who can make the change. Sign in to the channel as an owner or manager with access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Editors and viewers cannot reset the key.
- Check the encoder’s recovery process first. For a cloud encoder, find out how to enter a replacement key and whether reconnecting will resume the current event or require a new one. If you cannot verify the recovery path, plan for a possible interruption.
- Reset the key in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, select Stream, and reset the stream key. Copy the newly generated key.
- Update the encoder. Replace its saved key with the new one. YouTube’s encoder setup also calls for the YouTube Live server URL and stream key; use the service’s documented fields and connection procedure. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Verify the feed in YouTube. Check for a preview and confirm the event is receiving the feed. For a scheduled stream using an encoder, YouTube’s setup instructions say to wait for the preview and then click Go live. Do not assume that reconnecting the encoder alone makes the event live.
Questions to ask a cloud streaming provider
- Does the provider store the YouTube destination key, and how do I replace it after a reset?
- Does resetting the key make the provider’s current connection to YouTube fail?
- Does the video source keep looping in the cloud while the destination reconnects?
- Will reconnection resume the same scheduled or live event, or create a new event?
- Does the provider support a backup input or encoder failover, and how can I test it?
Get answers for the specific service and workflow you use. YouTube’s general instructions establish that the encoder must be updated; they do not describe how any particular cloud provider handles key rotation.

Backup encoders are not a guarantee against key-reset interruptions
YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network connection and checking whether the player rolls over. That tests encoder failover. It does not establish that a backup encoder or cloud relay will keep the same event live after the destination key is reset. YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips – Computer
YouTube also recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but using one is an optional production choice—not a documented fix for maintaining a live session through a key reset.
