Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose OBS Studio if you need a visual workspace for scenes and interactive changes; choose FFmpeg if your stream is a repeatable media pipeline you can configure and supervise from the command line. Neither tool has a substantiated reliability advantage for 24/7 use. The right choice depends on your media workflow and on whether the specific VPS, network route, and supervision setup can sustain the stream.
OBS vs FFmpeg: which workflow fits?
| Decision | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Operating style | A visual application and production workspace for scenes and sources. Its official Knowledge Base covers setup, streaming, sources, filters, audio, scripting, and troubleshooting. | A command-line media pipeline in which inputs, processing, and outputs are specified explicitly. See the FFmpeg documentation. |
| Best fit | Use it when you want to arrange multiple visible sources and make interactive production adjustments. | Use it when inputs and transformations are known and can be expressed as a repeatable command or script. |
| Media processing | Configure sources and output in OBS, then verify the actual stream settings. | Can stream-copy compatible encoded media, filter, transcode, and route multiple inputs and outputs. Stream copy avoids re-encoding, but cannot apply filters and does not work for every target-format combination. |
| Unattended operation | Plan how the application and session will be supervised on the chosen server OS. Available official guidance does not establish headless 24/7 reliability. | Plan process supervision, logs, alerts, and restart policy. Scripting can automate the workflow, but the FFmpeg manual does not guarantee uninterrupted operation. |
| Compute planning | Measure the actual scenes, sources, and encoding configuration on the intended VPS; there is no universal CPU or RAM sizing established here. | Measure the actual decoding, filtering, and encoding workload. Compatible stream copy can use less processing than transcoding or filtering, but actual requirements depend on the pipeline. |
This is a workflow comparison, not a measured uptime ranking. There is no substantiated comparative benchmark here for 24/7 reliability, CPU use, recovery, or performance on Indian networks.

Set the encoder to YouTube’s ingest requirements
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the real broadcast. Live Control Room detects encoder settings; check stream health and messages during the event. A speed-test peak alone does not establish that the VPS can sustain a bitrate around the clock.
Recommended Free Tools
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Stereo audio: 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps recommended in advanced settings.
The following are YouTube-published recommended encoder ingest bitrates in its current guidance; the page does not display a publication year. They are recommendations, not a guarantee of what a particular VPS connection can sustain.
#1 Best Overall
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended bitrate | H.265/AV1 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Choose a quality the available upload connection can deliver reliably. Allow headroom for audio and protocol overhead, then validate sustained outbound capacity from the actual VPS and route to YouTube ingest.
Prepare a 24/7 deployment
- Define the media path. For OBS, configure and test the required scenes, sources, audio, and output. For FFmpeg, verify each input, any filters or transcodes, and the output protocol. If using stream copy, confirm the codecs and container are compatible with the intended output.
- Set the YouTube stream destination. Configure the encoder with the stream key and RTMPS destination provided in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube before resuming.
- Run a representative test. Use the intended resolution, frame rate, audio, and motion. Confirm the stream appears correctly in Live Control Room and inspect its health and messages before relying on it unattended.
- Supervise both process and connection. Decide how you will detect an encoder exit, input-file failure, network interruption, or host reboot. Set up suitable logs, alerts, and a restart policy for your operating system and deployment; do not assume either application restarts or recovers in the way you need without testing.
- Plan a separate recording if needed. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Check the current archive live streams guidance, and keep and verify an independent recording when a durable copy matters.
Teams that need programmatic status checks can use the YouTube Live Streaming API’s LiveStreams resource. API integration is optional; basic encoder setup does not require it.

Check the Indian VPS before choosing a plan
An India-region label does not prove sustained upload capacity, a particular route to YouTube ingest, included traffic, or uptime. Evaluate the specific provider and plan you intend to use rather than relying on generic VPS specifications.
- Verify the server’s location and route to YouTube ingest, then run a sustained upload test from that VPS.
- Check whether outbound traffic is included, capped, or billed separately. Estimate monthly egress from your chosen bitrate plus audio and protocol overhead.
- Measure CPU use for the actual scene or media pipeline. Confirm whether hardware encoding is exposed to the instance before relying on it.
- Check storage capacity and write performance if you will keep a separate recording on the VPS.
- Review reboot behavior, process-supervision options, logs, monitoring, support, and service limits.
- Choose the location for stable encoder-to-ingest operation. YouTube handles downstream transcoding and delivery; the VPS is not the server that directly serves every viewer.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Unstable stream health or dropped connection | Sustained VPS upload, route to ingest, or bitrate too close to available capacity. | Test from the actual VPS over time, reduce output quality or bitrate if needed, and leave headroom rather than relying on a peak speed-test result. |
| Live Control Room reports an encoder setting or format issue | Codec, RTMP/RTMPS configuration, CBR, frame rate, or keyframe interval. | Compare the active output against YouTube’s recommended settings and retest before the broadcast. |
| Stream stops after an input or process failure | Missing or unreadable source file, encoder exit, host reboot, or absent supervision. | Check logs and input availability, then test the process monitor and restart policy against the failure you expect. |
| High CPU use or failed transcode | Encoding, decoding, or filters exceed the VPS’s available capacity. | Measure the actual workload. If compatible with the target, stream copy can avoid re-encoding; it cannot filter media and may not suit every format combination. |
| No dependable archive after a long broadcast | A stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube. | Check YouTube’s current archive guidance and maintain a separate recording if preservation matters. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube stream made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera production, StreamNeo is an alternative that avoids operating OBS or FFmpeg on your VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded media from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
