How to Keep OBS Running on a Windows PC During Indian Power Cuts

A UPS can bridge short power cuts, but sustained OBS streaming depends on load sizing, safe shutdown, PC recovery settings and testing the full restart path.

A UPS can keep your Windows PC, network gear and any essential peripherals running through a short power cut—but only for as long as its battery lasts. To handle a longer outage safely, set up a graceful shutdown before the battery is exhausted, configure the PC to start when power returns if its BIOS/UEFI supports that option, and test whether your actual OBS setup recovers. This is a plan for reducing interruptions, not a guarantee of an uninterrupted stream.

What a UPS can—and cannot—do for an OBS stream

A UPS provides limited battery backup. It can bridge a brief interruption or give Windows time to shut down cleanly, but it is not an all-night power source unless it is part of a separately sized longer-duration power system. The actual runtime depends on the connected load, battery condition and the UPS model.

Power returning to the UPS does not, by itself, prove that the PC will start, OBS will relaunch, or YouTube will resume the live stream. Treat these as separate recovery stages: UPS output, PC startup, Windows sign-in, OBS startup, network availability, and stream status.

Work out the backup you need before buying a UPS

Measure the equipment load

  1. List the equipment that must stay powered: the PC tower, router or modem, and a monitor only if you need it during the interruption.
  2. Measure or estimate the running watt draw of each device, then total the watts. Use the actual streaming workload where possible; a PC’s draw can vary with its encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.
  3. Check both the UPS’s maximum watt output and its VA rating. The connected equipment must remain within both limits.
  4. Decide how many minutes you need: enough to ride through a typical brief cut, or enough to shut down gracefully if an outage continues. Check the manufacturer’s runtime curve at your estimated load rather than choosing by VA alone.

APC by Schneider Electric recommends UPS output watt capacity 20–25% above the connected equipment’s total draw. This is the manufacturer’s sizing guidance, not a universal standard or a promise of any particular runtime. Its UPS buying guide also explains that adding equipment reduces runtime.

Connect only what needs backup

Plug the tower and the network equipment required for the stream into battery-backed outlets. Add a monitor only if it is necessary for the workflow you intend to use. Avoid putting nonessential accessories on battery outlets: every added load shortens the available runtime. If the router or modem loses power, a powered PC alone cannot keep an internet stream connected.

Check local product suitability

For a specific UPS sold in India, verify its electrical compatibility, service and warranty coverage, runtime data at your measured load, and replacement-battery compatibility with the vendor. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish an India-specific model, price or runtime recommendation for an unknown PC setup, so a watt/VA rating cannot be responsibly prescribed without your load and runtime target.

Set up safe shutdown for an outage that lasts too long

  1. Connect UPS monitoring. If your UPS supports USB monitoring, connect it to the PC and install shutdown software confirmed as compatible with that UPS family and software version.
  2. Choose a shutdown threshold. In the UPS software, configure Windows to shut down orderly during a prolonged disturbance, before the battery is exhausted. APC describes PowerChute as supporting unattended graceful shutdown; see its PowerChute management software guide. Exact options and compatibility depend on the UPS and software version.
  3. Keep the network path in the plan. Put the router/modem on battery backup if your stream depends on it, and include its power draw when checking the UPS limits and runtime.
  4. Confirm the shutdown works. During a controlled test, verify that the monitoring software detects the interruption and Windows shuts down before backup power runs out. Do not wait for a real long outage to discover the threshold or USB monitoring is not working.

Configure the PC to start when power returns

Some motherboards provide a BIOS/UEFI option commonly named “Restore AC Power,” “AC Back,” or “Power On After AC Loss.” Look in the motherboard firmware settings or manual; wording and availability vary by model. APC notes that a Back-UPS may restart when adequate utility power returns, while the connected PC may not. The PC needs an appropriate BIOS setting to power on when power becomes available: APC Canada’s restart FAQ was modified on 2025-03-20.

Test the complete sequence with a controlled interruption. Check that the UPS behaves as expected, the PC starts, Windows reaches the intended sign-in state, the network is back, and OBS has the correct scene and audio devices. Configure Windows sign-in and OBS startup only if unattended recovery is part of your plan. Do not assume that a PC power-on setting also launches OBS or restores a YouTube broadcast.

Keep OBS within the PC’s capabilities

OBS Project lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic Windows requirements, but meeting basic compatibility requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording performance. CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test your actual scenes and stream settings under the workload you plan to use. See the OBS Project system requirements page, dated 2021-08-25.

After changing Windows, drivers, OBS, UPS software or PC hardware, repeat the relevant tests. A setup that worked before an update may not behave identically afterward.

What to expect from restart and reconnection

There are several distinct outcomes after a power cut: the UPS may restore output, the PC may or may not power on, Windows may need sign-in, OBS may or may not start with the right devices, and the platform may or may not reconnect the broadcast. The cited platform and system guidance does not establish universal OBS auto-relaunch or live-stream recovery behavior, so verify these stages on your own installation.

Microsoft’s article on Windows system failure and recovery options concerns automatic restart after a system error. It is not evidence that Windows or OBS will start after mains power returns.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

  • The UPS beeps or shuts off soon after the cut starts: the connected load may be too high, the battery may be undercharged or aging, or the runtime expectation may exceed the unit’s capability. Recheck watts and VA, remove nonessential loads, and compare the load with the manufacturer’s runtime data.
  • The PC does not turn on after power returns: check whether the UPS has adequate utility input and whether the motherboard has a power-on-after-AC-loss setting enabled. A UPS restart does not ensure a PC restart.
  • Windows starts, but OBS does not: confirm that you deliberately configured and tested the Windows sign-in and OBS startup path. Inspect the actual OBS scene, audio devices and network before relying on unattended operation.
  • OBS is open, but the stream is not live: check internet connectivity and the live status at YouTube. Do not treat a running OBS window as proof that the broadcast resumed.
  • Runtime has fallen compared with earlier tests: check battery charge and age, and retest at the current workload. APC notes that battery runtime declines with age; its Back-UPS battery troubleshooting guidance covers battery-related runtime issues. A displayed runtime estimate is not a guarantee under a streaming workload.
  • The stream struggles even when power is stable: validate OBS settings and workload independently of the UPS. Resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity all affect whether the PC can sustain streaming.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos during a local power cut, StreamNeo is a different approach from keeping OBS running on your Windows PC: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only.

  • One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • One free day per account, with no card required.
  • Every slot includes one always-on stream, pooled 10 GB storage per active slot, 24/7 looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. The product is the same on every plan; only the billing length changes.

Monthly $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or pricing. Start the free first day.
