For automating a sequence of prerecorded videos on YouTube Live, vMix has the clearer documented workflow: its vMix 29 guide describes video files as inputs and a PlayList that runs multiple inputs with start times, durations, and transitions. Streamlabs Desktop supports YouTube streaming, but the official Streamlabs material reviewed here does not establish an equivalent playlist or continuous-loop control. Neither finding proves that vMix has a one-click seamless-repeat setting for a single file, or that Streamlabs lacks a repeat control in every current build.
Which should you choose for prerecorded YouTube Live?
- Choose vMix if you need to schedule and sequence multiple prerecorded segments, and you use a supported Windows computer. Its guide documents file inputs, playlist automation, and YouTube Live output.
- Consider Streamlabs Desktop if you already use it for YouTube production and your current build’s media source controls provide the repeat behavior you need. The Streamlabs sources reviewed confirm YouTube streaming and general source setup, but not a dedicated file playlist or continuous-loop setting.
- For a single video that must repeat continuously, verify the exact behavior before committing. The available vMix documentation establishes playlist sequencing, not a confirmed seamless repeat toggle. The reviewed Streamlabs documentation does not resolve whether its current media-source interface provides a repeat control.
This is a documentation-based comparison, not a hands-on test. Product interfaces, releases, and licensing can change.

What each program documents
vMix: file inputs and playlist automation
The vMix 29 user guide lists video files among its input sources. It describes PlayList automation for multiple inputs, including start times, durations, and transition effects, and documents YouTube Live output. That makes vMix the more clearly documented choice for arranging prerecorded segments into a scheduled sequence.
A playlist is not automatically proof of a seamless loop. If your requirement is for one file—or an entire playlist—to restart indefinitely, confirm the repeat behavior in the current vMix interface or current help before building a long-running broadcast around it. Also check how the selected duration and transitions behave at the end of the sequence.

Streamlabs Desktop: YouTube streaming, but playlist behavior is unconfirmed here
Streamlabs describes Desktop as a streaming studio, provides setup guidance for adding production sources, and confirms YouTube support. The official materials reviewed here do not document a dedicated prerecorded-file playlist or continuous-loop control. If Streamlabs is already part of your workflow, inspect the media source controls in your installed build and verify that they meet your needs before going live; do not assume a control exists or that it repeats without interruption.
Instant Replay is a different feature
Streamlabs’ Instant Replay documentation describes capturing recent stream content in a replay buffer and playing that footage back on command. That is not the same as loading a prerecorded video file and looping it as the program feed.

These are capability and availability points, not performance guarantees. Both vendors indicate that what a computer can handle depends on the machine and production workload. Compare the number and type of sources you plan to use, the complexity of the production, and the current license terms—not just the minimum system requirements. Check each vendor’s current product and licensing information before purchase because release details, plan names, prices, and inclusions may change.
Plan the broadcast around the video, not an assumed loop button
- Decide whether you need a sequence or a repeat. For a sequence of different segments, vMix PlayList is the documented fit. For a single file or a playlist that must restart, first verify the current application’s repeat behavior.
- Check the current controls in the version you intend to use. In Streamlabs, verify the media source behavior in your installed build. In vMix, verify how PlayList handles the end of the sequence. Do a short private or unlisted rehearsal before relying on the setup for an extended broadcast.
- Confirm your computer and production workload. Check the vendor’s current operating-system and hardware requirements, then account for the actual number of inputs and other production work running at the same time. Minimum requirements are not a promise that every workload will run smoothly.
- Prepare your YouTube Live connection. Use YouTube’s current live-stream setup and the software’s current output controls. Treat stream keys as credentials: do not publish or share them, and replace one through YouTube if it is exposed. The product documentation summarized here confirms YouTube output support, but does not establish exact current menu labels or recommended output settings for your channel.
- Check rights and channel eligibility before scheduling. Only stream prerecorded material you have permission to use. A video playing as a live broadcast does not remove copyright obligations. Review YouTube’s current rules for live streaming and monetization, including any applicable reused-content requirements, and do not assume that technically successful playback means the channel or video qualifies for monetization.
- Observe the rehearsal through the full sequence boundary. Check that the correct input plays, that transitions work as intended, and that the output returns to the expected content if a repeat is essential. A short test that stops before the end cannot verify restart behavior.
Hardware and cost considerations
A local video file and a capable computer are fundamental to a desktop workflow. The documented workflows do not make a capture card, external drive, or control surface necessary solely because the source is prerecorded. Additional hardware may make sense for a separate need—such as bringing in an external camera feed—but it is not a default purchase for playing a file.
