Make the iframe enter the viewport, wait until the embedded content is actually ready, and then capture it. A screenshot call by itself does not guarantee that a lazy-loaded frame has loaded. This guide shows how to do it with Playwright or Puppeteer, how to handle cross-origin frames, and how to troubleshoot blank or clipped captures.
Why a lazy-loaded iframe is blank in a screenshot
A page can defer loading an iframe until it approaches the viewport. If your automation captures the page while the frame is still far below the fold, the embedded content may not yet exist or be rendered. Scrolling the page so the frame becomes visible is the first step; then wait for a signal that the content you need has appeared.

Google Search Central recommends that relevant lazy-loaded content load whenever it is visible in the viewport. Its guidance applies to images and iframes: Google Search Central’s lazy-loading guidance. The web.dev article on lazy-loading offscreen iframes describes browser support and behavior; its reported support figures are Chrome 77, Edge 79, Firefox 121, and Safari 16.4, not a fresh compatibility test.

- Locate the iframe. Use a stable selector for the iframe element or for the visible content you intend to capture.
- Bring it into view. Scroll the iframe into the viewport. This triggers the visibility condition commonly used by lazy-loading implementations.
- Wait for a meaningful ready signal. Prefer a visible expected element, a known frame URL, or an application-specific ready condition over a short fixed delay. A timeout alone can be too short on a slow page and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
- Capture the right target. Capture the iframe element when you need just its rendered box, or use a page screenshot when you need the surrounding layout too.
Full-page capture is not a universal lazy-load trigger. The capture may not cause every offscreen frame to load, and the frame may still need time to navigate and render after it becomes visible. Playwright example
This Node.js example scrolls an iframe into view, waits for a selector inside its frame, and captures the iframe element. Replace the selectors and readiness condition with ones that match the target page. Install Playwright and its browser in your project before running it.

If the page does not expose a stable visible selector, use a condition specific to the site—for example, wait for a known URL or visible text—rather than assuming that the iframe element’s presence means its contents are ready. Playwright’s installed version may affect available APIs; use the documentation that matches your project.
Puppeteer example
Puppeteer’s element screenshot workflow can scroll a hidden target into view, but you should still explicitly wait for the iframe content to be ready. This example waits for the iframe element, brings it into view, checks for a target inside the frame, then saves the frame’s box.

})();Use a frame URL that identifies the intended iframe; pages can contain several frames. Puppeteer’s frame access and screenshot APIs vary by installed version, so consult the Puppeteer screenshot guide and the API documentation for that version.
Same-origin and cross-origin frames
A parent page can generally inspect a frame’s DOM only when it is same-origin with that frame. MDN documents that HTMLIFrameElement.contentDocument returns the frame document only for same-origin content and returns null otherwise; see MDN’s contentDocument reference and the iframe element reference.
Cross-origin does not automatically mean the browser cannot display or screenshot the iframe. It does mean page JavaScript cannot freely inspect its internal DOM. In an automation framework, use that framework’s supported frame-selection mechanisms and an observable condition it can access. If the site blocks embedding or applies sandbox restrictions, automation does not remove those policies; use an authorized route that respects the site’s behavior.

Choose the screenshot area
- Iframe element: captures the frame’s rendered box and avoids unrelated page content. Check that its dimensions include everything you want; an iframe does not automatically expand to the full height of its embedded document.
- Viewport screenshot: captures what is visible in the browser window after scrolling the iframe into view.
- Full-page screenshot: captures the page’s scrollable extent, but does not ensure every deferred iframe has been triggered or finished rendering.
- Custom clip or viewport: useful when the frame is cut off, but set the viewport and clip based on the rendered dimensions you need.
Troubleshooting
The iframe is still blank
- Confirm that your selector matches the intended iframe and that it is attached to the page.
- Scroll it into view before waiting for its content.
- Wait for a visible, frame-specific readiness signal. The iframe element may exist before its embedded document finishes loading.
- Check whether the frame has navigated to the expected URL and whether the page reports a failed or blocked load.
The parent page cannot find content inside the frame
Check whether the frame is cross-origin. Same-origin policy restrictions can prevent access to its DOM from the parent page. Select the frame through the automation library’s frame APIs where possible; do not rely on reading contentDocument from a cross-origin parent context.

The site may restrict embedding, use sandbox attributes, require consent or interaction, or respond differently to automated browsing. Inspect the actual browser behavior and use a permitted capture method. A screenshot tool cannot bypass the site’s embedding policy.
The result clips the iframe
Compare the screenshot bounds with the iframe element’s rendered box. Use an element screenshot for the frame itself, or adjust the viewport or clip if the surrounding page area is required. If the embedded document has content beyond the iframe’s set dimensions, capture of the iframe box will not reveal that off-frame content.

A fixed delay works sometimes but fails intermittently
Replace the delay with a condition tied to the content that matters, such as a visible selector or expected frame URL. Network timing varies; a delay that happens to work on one run is not proof the frame is ready on another.

Does taking a full-page screenshot trigger a lazy-loaded iframe?
Not reliably. Scroll the frame into view and confirm its content is ready before capturing.
Can I screenshot a cross-origin iframe?
A cross-origin frame limits DOM inspection from the parent page; it does not by itself establish that a screenshot is impossible. Use supported automation frame access and respect the site’s embedding restrictions.
Should I use Playwright or Puppeteer?
Use the framework already used by your project. Both document page and element screenshot workflows; neither guarantees arbitrary iframe content has loaded just because capture was requested.
