To capture a lazy-loaded product image on a Shopify collection page, inspect the live image element in Chrome DevTools, scroll the product into view to trigger loading, then verify the image URL in the Network panel. Record both the element’s responsive image attributes and the URL the browser actually requested: they may differ.
What you need to capture
A collection page can declare several possible image URLs and let the browser choose one based on viewport and layout. The original HTML response may also differ from the rendered page if JavaScript or a theme app changes the element. To identify the image the storefront delivered, inspect the live page after the relevant image-loading trigger—not just the initial page source.

- Open the collection page and DevTools. In Chrome, open the Shopify collection page, then open DevTools. Select the Elements panel.
- Inspect the product image. Turn on Inspect mode and click the product image or its placeholder. Chrome’s Inspect mode highlights the corresponding DOM element and shows its styles.
- Read the live image attributes. In Elements, select the rendered
<img>and note itssrc,srcset,sizes,loading, andaltattributes. These are useful evidence of what the page declares, butsrcalone may not be the URL that was downloaded. - Check the browser-selected URL. With the image selected in Elements, open the Console and evaluate
$0.currentSrc. The result is the source selected for that element after the browser has applied layout and viewport conditions. If the selection is not the image element, usedocument.querySelector('CSS_SELECTOR').currentSrc, replacingCSS_SELECTORwith a selector for the image. - Trigger the lazy load. If the card is below the fold, scroll it toward or into the viewport and wait for the image to load. Then recheck the element and
currentSrc. Depending on the theme or app, scrolling or another interaction may cause attributes to change or a script-based loader to run. - Verify the request in Network. Open the Network panel, filter to image requests if useful, and find the request for the product image. Check that it completed and record its URL. Shopify recommends using Chrome DevTools Network to verify which image sizes download at different viewports; see Shopify’s image-filter guidance.
- Save or document the result. Copy the requested URL from Network if you need the delivered image source. For reproducibility, also record the collection URL, viewport, scroll position, and the element’s responsive attributes; the selected URL can change with those conditions.
How to interpret what you see
The initial source differs from the live element
The initial HTML response is not necessarily the final markup. If a theme script or app updates the page, Elements shows the current rendered element. Inspect it after scrolling or performing the interaction that triggers the image loader.

src differs from currentSrc
This can be normal when an image has responsive candidates in srcset. The browser selects a candidate using the available layout, viewport, and sizes information. Use currentSrc to see the browser’s choice, and Network to confirm what was requested. Keep the full candidate list if you are documenting responsive behavior.
The image only appears after scrolling
That is consistent with an offscreen image being lazy-loaded. Scroll it into view, wait, and look for the image request. A product card’s position in the collection markup does not by itself establish whether it was initially visible; viewport size and page layout matter.

The image is in the initial viewport
Distinguish above-the-fold images from below-the-fold lazy images when diagnosing loading. Shopify advises against lazy-loading the LCP image or another critical image in the initial viewport, because lazy loading can defer its discovery and download. See Shopify’s guidance on the LCP image.
If the image does not load
- No request appears: Scroll the card into view and wait. If nothing changes, check whether the element’s attributes change after scrolling or interaction; the theme or an app may use a script-based loader.
- A request appears but fails: Select it in Network and inspect its status and details. This distinguishes a failed request from an image that was never requested.
- The page shows a placeholder: Inspect the live
<img>after the trigger. The final source may not have been set yet, or the loader may have failed. - The URL changes when you resize the window: Recheck
currentSrcand Network at each viewport. Responsive source selection can legitimately choose a different candidate. - The original page source lacks the final URL: Use Elements and Network on the rendered page. JavaScript may modify the live DOM after the initial response.
The exact loading implementation depends on the Shopify theme and any apps in use. If you need to change a theme’s image-loading behavior rather than capture an image, Shopify’s Help Center guidance on images is a starting point; merchants may hire a Shopify Partner for changes beyond the theme editor.

Does `currentSrc` always identify a file I can download?
It identifies the URL selected by the browser. Check the corresponding Network request to confirm whether it was actually requested and completed.
Why do two people capture different Shopify image URLs?
Responsive source selection can vary with viewport and layout, so the browser may choose different candidates from the same `srcset`.
