To preserve the carousel’s current slide, pause autoplay first, avoid scrolling the page, wait until the target image is loaded and decoded, then capture the viewport or the carousel element. A full-page screenshot does not necessarily trigger the scroll events or viewport intersections that lazy-loaded content needs.
Why a carousel image may be missing
Lazy loading postpones fetching images until the browser considers them close enough to the viewport, or until a JavaScript observer detects that an image or its container is intersecting the viewport. A slide hidden behind another carousel slide may therefore exist in the page markup without its image being ready to paint. Chrome’s guidance notes that images behind a carousel or hidden by CSS may not load when marked loading="lazy", depending on their calculated distance from the viewport. JavaScript implementations often use IntersectionObserver or a library that loads images when a slide becomes visible. Google Search Central also describes native lazy loading and JavaScript-based approaches, emphasizing loading content when it is visible. The exact trigger depends on the site. MDN’s Intersection Observer reference and Google Search Central’s lazy-loading guidance explain the common patterns.

The safest approach is to use the site’s pause control, or its carousel library’s documented API, rather than relying on screenshot settings to stop autoplay. There is no universal selector or pause method: identify the control or API for the specific page. The following example assumes you have identified a pause button and an image within the carousel. Replace the example selectors with selectors from the page.

If autoplay is controlled by a library rather than a visible button, use that library’s documented pause API after identifying the page’s implementation. Waiting for an image request to finish is not always enough: decoding and painting may still be pending.

Use screenshot options carefully
Playwright supports element screenshots, full-page screenshots, clip rectangles, screenshot-time CSS through style, and an animations option. Disabling animations can fast-forward finite animations and cancel infinite ones, which can help with CSS transitions or Web Animations. It is not a general control for JavaScript timers that advance a carousel. See Playwright’s Page API documentation.

Full-page capture renders the page’s full scrollable extent, but it is not the same operation as moving the visual viewport through the document. - Keep the carousel in view. Do not scroll the document if preserving the slide is essential.
- Expose the target slide using the page’s normal controls. If necessary, navigate to that slide, wait for its image, then pause autoplay. This may change the state temporarily, so verify that the desired slide is selected before capture.
- Wait for readiness. Check that the image has loaded and, where supported, decoded. A started network request alone does not prove the image has been painted.
- Capture the viewport or carousel element. Use a full-page screenshot only when the entire document is needed, then inspect the result for missing lazy-loaded content.
- Suppress CSS motion only if needed. If CSS animation causes inconsistent output, use screenshot-time CSS or Playwright’s animation option, then check the slide again because JavaScript autoplay may continue.
Troubleshooting
- The screenshot shows the next slide. Autoplay may still be running. Use the site’s pause control or the carousel library’s documented API, then confirm the active slide immediately before capture.
- The carousel is blank or its image is missing. The image may be lazy-loaded only when its slide approaches or enters the viewport. Keep the carousel visible, expose the intended slide through its normal controls, and wait for the image to load and decode.
- The full-page capture omits below-the-fold images. Full-page rendering does not guarantee ordinary scrolling or intersection events. Scroll the page when loading those images matters more than preserving state, or capture a viewport or element when the current slide matters more.
- Disabling animations did not stop the slide change. The setting addresses browser animations, not every JavaScript autoplay timer. Pause the carousel through its own control or API.
- The example pause selector finds no control. The selector is page-specific. Inspect the page for its accessible pause button, or identify the carousel implementation and consult its API; there is no generic selector that works for every site.
- The image request finished, but the capture still looks incomplete. Wait for the image’s decode step and ensure the target element is visible before taking the screenshot.
