Take a full-page screenshot with the Browserless REST API
The REST endpoint is the shortest route when the input is a URL and the output should be an image. It requires a Browserless API token, accepts a JSON request body, and returns image data. Use the hostname assigned or documented for your account; the production-region hostname below is the one shown in Browserless’s current quickstart, not a guarantee that every account uses the same region. See the Browserless Screenshot API documentation.

const token = process.env.BROWSERLESS_TOKEN;
if (!token) throw new Error("Set BROWSERLESS_TOKEN first");
const endpoint = `https://production-sfo.browserless.io/screenshot?token=${encodeURIComponent(token)}`;
const response = await fetch(endpoint, {
method: "POST",
headers: {
"Content-Type": "application/json",
"Cache-Control": "no-cache",
},
body: JSON.stringify({
url: "https://example.com/",
options: {
fullPage: true,
type: "png",
},
}),
});
if (!response.ok) {
const detail = await response.text();
throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed (${response.status}): ${detail}`);
}
const image = Buffer.from(await response.arrayBuffer());
const { writeFile } = await import("node:fs/promises");
await writeFile("screenshot.png", image);
Save this as an ES module, such as screenshot.mjs, and run it with BROWSERLESS_TOKEN set in the environment. The request shape and endpoint follow Browserless’s REST quickstart; the Node.js fetch wrapper is an adaptation, not a claim of an executed test. Keep the token out of source control and avoid logging the full endpoint because the token is in its query string.
What the request options mean
urlidentifies the page to navigate to. Browserless also supports supplying inlinehtmlinstead, but do not sendhtmlandurltogether in the same request.options.fullPage: trueasks for the full document rather than just the viewport. The flag is nested underoptionsfor this REST request.options.typeselects a documented image output format:png,jpeg, orwebp. Match the filename extension to the selected format.- For below-the-fold lazy-loaded content, use top-level
scrollPage: truealong withoptions.fullPage: true. The scrolling option and capture option serve different purposes: scrolling encourages content to load; full-page capture sets the capture scope.
For a particular element rather than the whole document, the REST API documents selector at the top level alongside url. For a fixed rectangle, use the documented clip settings inside options. Check the endpoint schema before combining capture modes.

When to use a connected Puppeteer or Playwright session
Use a browser session if the page needs extra preparation—such as waiting for a particular navigation state or running interactions—before capture. The script connects to Browserless over a WebSocket, controls a page through the browser library, takes the screenshot, and closes the remote browser session in finally. Browserless’s examples use puppeteer-core or playwright-core; these packages connect to a browser rather than downloading and managing a local browser. See Browserless’s Node.js screenshot examples.
Puppeteer
Install puppeteer-core in your project, then use the Puppeteer-specific connection and navigation pattern shown here:

import puppeteer from "puppeteer-core";
const token = process.env.BROWSERLESS_TOKEN;
if (!token) throw new Error("Set BROWSERLESS_TOKEN first");
const browser = await puppeteer.connect({
browserWSEndpoint:
`wss://production-sfo.browserless.io?token=${encodeURIComponent(token)}`,
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto("https://example.com/", { waitUntil: "networkidle2" });
await page.screenshot({ path: "screenshot.png", fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The networkidle2 value is from Browserless’s Puppeteer example. It is a navigation wait condition, not a guarantee that every site-specific widget or delayed request has finished.

Playwright
Browserless also documents a Playwright alternative using playwright-core, a Chromium-specific WebSocket path, and Playwright’s networkidle navigation condition. Use its matching connection configuration rather than copying Puppeteer’s endpoint or wait option into Playwright:

Follow the current Browserless example for the WebSocket connection method and path associated with your account and library. A connected session offers a page object for navigation and interaction; the REST call is simpler if you only need a URL-to-image request.
Choose full-page, element, or clipped capture
| Need | Approach | Where it is configured |
|---|---|---|
| Entire document | Set fullPage: true. |
REST: options.fullPage. Puppeteer or Playwright: the screenshot call’s fullPage option. |
| One matching element | Use a selector-based capture. | REST documents selector as a top-level request field. Library APIs have their own element screenshot methods and schemas. |
| A specific rectangle | Use a clip rectangle. | REST clip settings are within options; confirm the endpoint schema for exact field names. |
Browserless’s REST API documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output along with viewport, clip, device scale factor, quality, and selector-related settings. Put each field where that endpoint’s schema specifies; options for its separate BQL interface are not interchangeable with REST request fields.

Full-page capture does not guarantee lazy content is present
A browser can capture the document’s full dimensions while images or sections that load on scroll remain unrendered. Browserless explains that lazy-loaded content renders when it scrolls into view. For the REST route, pair scrollPage: true at the top level with options.fullPage: true. Then inspect the output for particularly long or dynamic pages: page-specific scripts, authentication, automation blocking, or ongoing updates can still affect what appears.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- Only the visible viewport appears: confirm that
fullPage: trueis set in the screenshot options for the route you are using. Puppeteer’s screenshot reference documentsfullPageas false by default; omitting it can therefore produce a viewport capture. See Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference. - Images or lower sections are missing: add top-level
scrollPage: trueto the REST request while keepingoptions.fullPage: true. If using a browser session, prepare the page in a way appropriate to its own loading behavior before capturing it. - The wrong region is captured: use the REST selector field for a specific element or a clip rectangle for a fixed area. Confirm the field placement for the interface in use rather than copying a BQL argument into a REST body.
- The file format or quality is unexpected: set the REST
typeto the desired supported format and use a matching extension. Puppeteer’s reference says PNG is its default and that quality values from 0 to 100 do not apply to PNG; use the relevant format and settings for JPEG or WebP. - The page is blank, shows a CAPTCHA, or differs from a normal visit: Browserless notes that blank images, CAPTCHA pages, or divergent content can indicate the site is blocking automation. This is a troubleshooting clue, not a promise that a screenshot service will bypass the site’s controls.
- A browser session remains allocated after an error: ensure the connected browser is closed in a
finallyblock, as in the examples. Cleanup releases the session but does not itself guarantee that navigation or capture succeeded. - The request returns an HTTP error: check the status and response body as in the REST example, then verify the token, account-specific endpoint host, request JSON, and whether the target page is reachable under the site’s access rules.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want a one-call screenshot instead of managing a remote browser session, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. The parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can make switching easier. The example below follows the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:

FAQ
Can the Browserless REST API return something other than an image?
The screenshot endpoint documented here returns image data. Browserless has separate documentation for other workflows, so do not assume the screenshot response is a PDF.
Can I send HTML instead of a website URL?
Yes. Browserless documents an inline html input for the REST screenshot API. Use it instead of url; the documentation warns against sending both in one request.
Does the BQL screenshot schema describe the REST API?
No. BQL is a separate interface with its own arguments and defaults. For example, its screenshot reference documents a 30-second default timeout and a false default for fullPage; do not transfer those details to a REST request unless the REST documentation also specifies them. See the BQL screenshot reference.
