Use Browserless to capture a rendered GST Portal page when you need a visual snapshot, but save the Portal’s own downloadable record whenever it is available. A screenshot shows what appeared on screen; it does not replace structured exports or establish that a record meets a legal requirement. Browserless supports authenticated browser workflows, but its documentation does not establish GST Portal approval or guarantee that a particular account flow will work.
Choose the right record before capturing
First identify the GST Portal page, form and tax period you need. Keep the capture limited to the information required for your recordkeeping task, especially where taxpayer or client data is visible.

Capture a page with Browserless
Browserless documents a REST Screenshot API: send a POST request to /screenshot with the page URL and optional capture settings. It returns an image such as PNG, JPEG or WebP. The documentation includes full-page capture; wait settings and selector capture can help with pages that render asynchronously or when only one element is needed. See the Browserless Screenshot API for the current endpoint details, required authentication and option names.
- Prepare access. Obtain a Browserless API token and keep it private. Browserless examples include the token in the request URL, so avoid putting a real token into published code, shared logs or shell history.
- Establish the page state. If the page requires login, use an authenticated workflow only if it is appropriate for your account and Browserless setup. Do not assume a saved browser state will pass the GST Portal’s login or verification checks.
- Set capture options. Choose an output format and, if needed, full-page capture or a wait/selector option from Browserless’s current API documentation. Make sure the capture occurs after the relevant data has rendered.
- Request and inspect the result. Save the returned image and open it. Confirm that it shows the expected GST page, tax period and data, rather than a blank page, CAPTCHA, access-denied response or stale screen.
- File the evidence together. Keep the screenshot alongside any official Portal export. Use a filename that identifies the form or page, period, capture date and whether the file is a screenshot or Portal export. This is a practical naming method, not a statutory rule.
Authenticated sessions and profiles
Browserless documents persistent browser sessions that retain cookies and navigation history, as well as authenticated profiles that load saved browser state before rendering a screenshot. Those capabilities can help when a workflow depends on an existing login, but they do not guarantee compatibility with the GST Portal or acceptance of automated access. Screenshot or PDF?
Use a screenshot when the visible layout and page state matter. Browserless says its PDF endpoint uses Chrome’s print engine and returns selectable text, unlike a screenshot. That can be more useful for searching or copying text, but the documentation does not say that a Browserless PDF is legally sufficient for any GST record. See the Browserless PDF API.

Check the capture before relying on it
Browserless warns that an automated capture may show a blank image, CAPTCHA, access-denied page or content different from what a regular browser displays when a site blocks automation. Do not treat a successful HTTP request or image file as proof that the intended record was captured. Inspect the actual image and compare it with the Portal page you expect. The Screenshot API documentation describes these failure signs.

- Blank or partially rendered image: The page may not have finished loading, or automation may be blocked. Review the screenshot and adjust the documented wait setting if rendering is simply delayed; if the Portal is blocking automation, do not try to bypass its controls.
- CAPTCHA or access denied: The response is a challenge or denial, not the requested record. Use the Portal through an authorized route and save an official export where available.
- Wrong or stale page: Check the URL, selected tax period and session state. Confirm that the relevant page content appears before saving the capture.
- Authentication fails: A session or authenticated profile may not be accepted for this Portal flow. Browserless documents the capability, not guaranteed compatibility with GST accounts; do not assume repeated automated attempts will work.
- Token exposure risk: Treat the Browserless API token as a credential. Keep it out of shared examples and logs, and avoid placing a real token in shell commands that may be retained in shell history.
Retention, acceptance and integration limits
The sources cited here do not establish a universal retention period for screenshots or prove that Browserless is approved by GSTN for GST Portal automation. A screenshot’s suitability depends on the record and the applicable obligations; confirm those with an authoritative GST source or a qualified adviser rather than treating the image as automatically sufficient.
