How to Screenshot a Cookie Banner Before and After Accepting Cookies

Use a clean browser context, capture the banner, click the site's actual Accept control, and save a second image with identical framing and a different filename.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make a useful before-and-after comparison, open the page in a clean browser context, capture it with the banner visible, click the site’s actual Accept control, then capture it again using the same framing and a different filename. The images show what changed on screen; they do not prove which cookies were stored or whether the site’s consent behavior is compliant.

Prepare a clean, comparable test

  1. Start with a first-visit state. Open the page in a private or incognito window so an earlier consent choice is less likely to suppress the banner. Sitepager’s guide recommends this for a first-visit view. If you need to use your regular Chrome profile, open DevTools, go to Application > Storage > Cookies, select the site’s origin, and use the clear-all action. Clearing cookies can affect other site state, so use a clean private window for a simple one-off capture when practical. Sitepager’s workflow guide and Chrome’s cookie documentation describe these approaches.
  2. Hold the comparison conditions steady. Use the same URL, browser and version, window size, zoom, page position, and screenshot type for both images. If the comparison needs to be reproducible across people or locations, record the browser/version and region: banner presentation can vary by region, and Sitepager notes its scans operate from one region.
  3. Choose the capture scope. Capture the whole page when surrounding content and the overlay matter; capture only the banner when you need a focused record of its wording or layout. Use the same scope for the second image.

Capture the before and after in Firefox

Firefox’s Developer Tools support both whole-page and single-element screenshots. Mozilla’s Firefox Source Docs puts it simply: “You can use the Developer Tools to take a screenshot of the entire page, or of a single element in the page.”

Capture the whole page or a banner element

  1. Open the page in Firefox and confirm the banner is visible.
  2. For a full-page image, open Settings > Available Toolbox Buttons in Developer Tools and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page. Use the screenshot icon to capture.
  3. For just the banner, open the Inspector, select the banner node, and choose Screenshot Node.
  4. Save the first image as something distinct, such as cookie-banner-before.png.
  5. Click the page’s actual Accept control. Wait for the page to settle, then take the same kind of screenshot and save it as cookie-banner-after.png.

Firefox also provides a Web Console :screenshot helper with options for a filename, delay, device-pixel ratio, full-page capture, and CSS selector. Use a delay if a transient state needs time to appear, or a selector to capture the selected element and its descendants. Keep the device-pixel ratio the same in both images because it changes image scale. Check the options in Mozilla’s Web Console helper documentation; the precise command syntax and available options are documented there.

Use different filenames: Firefox warns that a later capture to the same filename overwrites the earlier image. Firefox screenshot controls and the :screenshot helper are Firefox-specific; Chrome’s cookie tools described below are for inspecting state, not for following these screenshot steps. Firefox’s screenshot documentation covers the capture controls.

What to compare—and what screenshots cannot establish

Compare whether the banner disappeared, whether its overlay was removed, and what page content became visible after the click. Preserve both original files and note the action and environment used. A screenshot documents the visible result; it cannot establish by itself that the expected choice was stored, that the right cookies were allowed or blocked, or that the site meets a legal standard.

If you need to investigate behavior rather than appearance, inspect storage and network activity separately. In Chrome, use DevTools > Application > Storage > Cookies and select the site’s origin; the cookie table includes domain, path, expiry, HttpOnly, Secure, and SameSite fields. In Firefox, the Network Monitor’s Cookies tab shows cookie details sent with requests or returned in responses. These are observations for investigation, not a compliance verdict. See Chrome’s cookie inspection guide and Firefox’s Network Monitor documentation.

Chrome privacy settings can affect the result

Chrome’s Privacy and security panel can temporarily limit third-party cookies and report blocked or exempted status. The temporary setting requires a reload to apply. If you use it, record that condition and do not mistake its effect for the site’s own consent choice. Chrome’s third-party-cookie troubleshooting documentation explains the setting.

Manual capture or an automated visual check?

Approach Useful for Trade-off
Manual browser capture A one-off record of the banner or page before and after a real click. Requires you to reset the context, keep framing consistent, click the control, and save both files.
Sitepager scan with a click selector Repeated visual checks on representative pages; its documented workflow captures before and after a selected click. Requires service setup and a narrowly scoped scan. It checks appearance and dismissal, not consent behavior by itself; Sitepager describes a one-region scan, so regional presentation may differ.

For a repeatable automated appearance check, Sitepager’s documented workflow uses a click selector on one or two representative pages and takes a screenshot before and after. Treat that as a vendor-specific service workflow, not a browser standard or a functional consent test.

ScreenshotNeo can make a clean capture through one GET request. Its cookie-banner handling accepts the consent banner like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server for AI agents, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

This one-call example captures a page, but it does not create a before-and-after pair by itself. For that comparison, make two requests with the same target and framing, one before and one after the interaction you want to document. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Common problems and fixes

  • The banner is missing in the first image: A stored choice may be suppressing it. Use a private window or clear the site’s cookies, then reload.
  • The second capture replaced the first: Give each screenshot a different filename, such as cookie-banner-before.png and cookie-banner-after.png.
  • The images do not line up: Match the URL, viewport, zoom, page position, capture scope, and—when using Firefox’s console helper—device-pixel ratio.
  • The banner disappears but you need to verify consent behavior: A visual change is not proof of stored consent. Inspect the relevant cookies and request/response details in the browser’s storage and network tools.
  • The result differs in another region: Record the region and browser conditions; banner presentation and behavior can vary. A single-region automated scan does not establish what visitors elsewhere see.
  • The banner changes after a reload when third-party cookies are limited: Chrome’s temporary privacy setting takes effect after reload. Record it separately from the site’s choice.
