Find your stream’s RTMPS ingest URL in YouTube Live Control Room, reveal the secure URL in Stream settings, and pair it with that stream’s matching key. In FFmpeg, send the output to the URL and key in the format your build accepts. RTMPS requires a TLS connection on port 443, and not every FFmpeg package supports it.
Where to find your YouTube RTMPS URL
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Select the Stream tab, or schedule a stream if you are setting one up in advance.
- Open Stream settings. In the Stream URL field, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; do not assume that it is the secure address.
- Copy the RTMPS URL and the stream key associated with that same stream configuration. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
YouTube’s guide to encrypting a stream using RTMPS explains the Live Control Room procedure and notes that the encoder must support RTMPS. The endpoint and key are stream-specific, so use the values displayed for your own stream rather than a URL or key copied from an example.

Get the URL through the YouTube Live Streaming API
If your setup creates or manages streams through YouTube’s API, retrieve the connection information from the LiveStreams resource. The primary secure endpoint is cdn.ingestionInfo.rtmpsIngestionAddress; the optional backup endpoint is cdn.ingestionInfo.rtmpsBackupIngestionAddress. YouTube returns the stream name separately. Depending on the encoder interface, provide the URL and stream name in separate fields, or use the documented combined form STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME.

Send a file to YouTube with FFmpeg
For a prerecorded file, this is the general command pattern:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY'
Replace INPUT, RTMPS_URL, and STREAM_KEY with your own values. This is an illustrative pattern, not a command guaranteed to work unchanged with every FFmpeg build, operating system, input file, or stream configuration. Some encoders require the URL and key in separate fields; follow that interface instead of appending the key.

For a live capture source, replace INPUT with the actual device or capture input and use the codecs and options supported by that source. Never publish your key in a screenshot, public command, process log, or shell-history example.
Check that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. RTMPS support can vary among builds. In particular, FFmpeg documents the librtmp RTMPS variant as requiring a build configured with --enable-librtmp and the relevant librtmp headers and library. Check the protocol support available in your installed build—for example, with FFmpeg’s protocol listing—and consult the documentation for that package if RTMPS is missing.

See the FFmpeg protocols documentation. A command that works with one packaged build may fail with another because their enabled protocols differ.
Choose encoding settings for the stream
The command uses H.264 video and AAC audio as a straightforward starting pattern, but choose the profile and bitrate for your intended resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance. YouTube’s general guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in supported contexts, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Match resolution and bitrate to the relevant profile rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream.

Why RTMPS needs the right URL and port
RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance requires the secure rtmps scheme and port 443. Use the host and address YouTube provides; do not convert an ordinary RTMP address yourself or substitute a generic endpoint. For a custom/API encoder, the TLS handshake must also send the server hostname as SNI for server authentication.
Troubleshoot common FFmpeg connection problems
- SSL or certificate error: Re-copy the RTMPS URL from the stream’s settings and check that the scheme is
rtmps, notrtmp. Confirm the connection uses port443and that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. - Connection timeout: Check for a mistyped or outdated URL, the wrong port, and a build without RTMPS support. YouTube identifies an incorrect URL or port and an encoder that does not support RTMPS as possible causes.
- Connection starts but the stream does not appear as expected: Make sure the URL and key belong to the same stream. Confirm whether FFmpeg or an intervening encoder expects the key appended to the URL or entered separately.
- Connected, but stream health is poor: Check the stream’s status and health in Live Control Room. Compare your codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected profile.
- Custom/API client fails during TLS setup: Connect to the YouTube-provided host on port 443 and send that hostname as SNI in the TLS handshake.
