Playwright can take viewport, full-page, buffer, or element screenshots; a scheduled workflow such as GitHub Actions can run the script repeatedly. Keep the capture environment and settings stable so you can distinguish site changes from rendering differences.
Plan the recurring capture
Before automating, define what the report needs to show and how the images will be handled afterward. Screenshot generation and recurring execution are separate jobs: the browser renders and captures the page, while the scheduler starts that work on a timetable.

- Choose the pages. Keep a list of target URLs, and note if any require authentication or a particular page state. Credential handling depends on the chosen workflow and client requirements; verify it before scheduling captures of private pages.
- Set the capture scope. Decide whether each report needs the visible viewport, the whole page, or a particular element. Use the same viewport and other browser settings for comparable captures.
- Define readiness. Choose a page or element state that indicates the relevant content is ready. A fixed delay, selector wait, or network-idle condition can suit different sites; validate the choice per site rather than assuming one wait strategy fits every page.
- Choose cadence and output handling. Set a schedule aligned with the client reporting cycle. Use filenames that identify the site and capture date, then decide where images will be retained and how the client will receive them. There is no universally established storage or delivery choice; meet the client’s access and retention requirements.
- Make failures visible. Set useful timeouts and retries, and ensure a failed run is visible to the person preparing the report.
Choose the right screenshot type

Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in the environment that will run the scheduled job. Save the following as capture.mjs. It reads URLs from the URLS environment variable, takes full-page screenshots, and names them with the site hostname and UTC date. Set URLS to a comma-separated list of pages.

For a page that renders the report content later, add an appropriate locator wait after navigation, such as await page.locator('.report-ready').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30_000 });, replacing the selector with one that actually identifies the content on that site. For a compact viewport image, remove fullPage: true. To capture one element, use await page.locator('.report-panel').screenshot({ path: 'screenshots/panel.png' });. To pass image bytes to an upload or processing step, omit path and use the buffer returned by await page.screenshot({ fullPage: true });.
Schedule the script with GitHub Actions
A GitHub Actions workflow can run the capture script on a cron schedule. This example runs at 09:00 UTC on Mondays and stores generated files as a downloadable workflow artifact. Change the cron expression and URL list to match the client workflow. GitHub’s scheduled workflow configuration and artifact retention should be checked against the repository’s current settings.

Keep visual comparisons meaningful
A screenshot difference can come from the site or from the environment that rendered it. Playwright notes that browser rendering may vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Its guidance is to use the same environment where baseline screenshots were generated for consistent comparisons; see Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance.

- Keep the browser version, operating environment, viewport, device scale, and capture mode consistent.
- Use the same readiness condition for each page and avoid treating a page captured before its content appears as a genuine visual change.
- Review material differences in context instead of treating every pixel variation as a site change.
Troubleshoot scheduled captures
- The output is blank or incomplete: The page may not have rendered the target content when the screenshot ran. Wait for a page-specific selector or a suitable readiness condition, and check whether the page needs a longer timeout.
- The run times out: Check whether the URL is reachable from the runner and whether the page waits indefinitely on requests. Use a realistic timeout and a readiness condition tied to the report content rather than waiting indefinitely for all network activity.
- A scheduled run produces no files: Confirm the cron schedule, URL environment variable, script path, and output directory. The workflow above fails if no artifact files are found, which makes that condition easier to notice.
- Images differ between runs without an obvious site change: Compare browser and runner environments, viewport and capture settings, and page readiness before concluding the site changed.
- A private page is captured as a login screen: The scheduled job may not have the required authenticated session. Configure access only through a credential method appropriate to the repository and client, and confirm that the resulting session can reach the intended page.

Can I use this workflow for PDFs as well as screenshots?
The Playwright example here saves PNG screenshots. PDF capture requires a separate browser-PDF step or a service that supports PDF output.
