Use Chrome DevTools for a one-off capture, or Playwright when you need to regenerate the same screenshots reliably. Set and record the exact viewport width and height, capture either the visible viewport or the full page, and label each file so its breakpoint and capture mode are clear.
Choose what the screenshot needs to show
A viewport screenshot shows the part of the page visible within a particular screen size. A full-page screenshot includes content farther down the scrollable document. They are different artifacts: use the first to document what fits at a breakpoint and the second when the documentation needs the whole page. Keep the distinction in the filename or caption.

For a useful mobile-and-desktop comparison, choose deliberate widths and use the same height when a controlled side-by-side comparison matters. Change the height only when the documentation needs to illustrate a particular screen shape. Record both dimensions with each image.

- Open the page in Chrome, open DevTools, and turn on the device toolbar.
- Choose Responsive mode and enter the viewport width and height you want to document.
- To locate the page’s actual responsive transitions, enable the media-query bars. Chrome displays max-width and min-width breakpoints; click a breakpoint to set a viewport that triggers it. This is more informative than assuming a common preset matches the site’s CSS.
- Choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the full scrollable page.
- Name or caption the file with the page, dimensions, and capture mode. For example:
page-mobile-375x812-viewport.pngandpage-desktop-1440x900-viewport.png. These are naming examples, not required browser settings.
Chrome’s documented responsive width presets are 320, 375, 425, 768, 1024, 1440, and 2560 pixels. They are convenient sample widths, not universal breakpoint values. Regenerate captures with Playwright
For repeatable documentation, configure a browser context with a device profile or set viewport dimensions explicitly, navigate to the page, and use Playwright’s screenshot API. Set fullPage: true when you want the full scrollable page; otherwise the capture is viewport-only. Playwright also supports format, clipping, and scale options.

Keep captures comparable and accurately described
- Record the browser, viewport width and height, whether device emulation was used, and whether the image is viewport-only or full-page.
- Keep screenshot scale consistent when comparing output pixel dimensions. Playwright’s scale option affects the resulting image dimensions.
- Use presets as sample sizes, not as proof of where a particular site’s CSS breakpoint lies.
- Device emulation is useful for repeatable layout evidence, but it runs on a desktop browser and is only an approximation of a physical phone. Check on real hardware when device-specific rendering, input, or performance matters.
Troubleshooting breakpoint screenshots
The mobile layout does not appear
Check the width entered in Responsive mode or the configured Playwright viewport, then verify the page’s actual media-query breakpoint. In DevTools, enable the media-query bars and click the relevant breakpoint rather than relying on a generic preset.
The screenshot omits content below the fold
The capture is viewport-only. In DevTools choose Capture a full size screenshot, or set fullPage: true in Playwright.

Images have different pixel dimensions despite matching viewports
Check the screenshot scale setting and keep it consistent between captures. Viewport dimensions and output image dimensions are related but are not necessarily identical when scale differs.
The emulated result differs from a phone
Desktop-based emulation is not proof of physical-device behavior. Validate on a real device if the distinction is important to the documentation.
