The simplest way to save a long web page as a PDF is to open the page in a desktop browser, use Print, choose a PDF destination, and inspect the preview before saving. Long pages can paginate differently from how they look on screen, so check the saved file for missing content, clipped tables, blank pages, and readable text before sharing it with a client.
Save the page as a PDF in your browser
- Load the page completely. Wait for the relevant content to appear. If the site loads more content as you scroll, scroll through the page first, then return to the top; otherwise, content that has not loaded may be absent from the PDF.
- Open the print dialog. In Microsoft Edge, use Settings and more > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS. In Firefox, open Menu > Print. Browser labels can vary by version.
- Choose a PDF destination. In Firefox, select Save to PDF from the destination dropdown. In Edge, choose an available PDF destination in the print flow, then save the file. See Microsoft Edge’s print instructions and Firefox’s print help.
- Set the page layout. Choose paper size, orientation, margins, and scale. Use a readable scale rather than shrinking everything to fit; landscape orientation can be useful for wide tables.
- Review the entire preview. Check the first and last pages, as well as pages containing important tables or columns. Look for missing sections, clipped text, awkward page breaks, blank pages, or text too small to read.
- Save and verify. Use a descriptive filename, such as
ClientName-source-domain-page-title-capture-date.pdf, subject to the client’s naming and storage rules. Reopen the saved PDF and check its beginning, middle, end, and important links or tables before sending it.
Browser print output follows a paged layout, so the browser may divide content across as many pages as needed. Mozilla also cautions that pages can look different on paper than on screen. Chrome’s print CSS guide explains the paged-media model and how @page can set printed page size and margins in Chrome and Firefox.

Choose settings for a readable client record
Paper size, orientation, margins, and scale
Edge and Firefox provide controls for these settings. Start with the client’s expected paper size, then adjust orientation and margins for the content. If a wide table is cut off, try landscape orientation or a different scale and inspect the preview again. Avoid forcing a very wide page into a tiny font just to reduce the page count.
Headers, footers, and source details
Headers and footers can add context such as the date or page numbers. Edge says its option adds the current date to the document header and the page number to the footer. These details do not necessarily identify the source URL or establish client-specific compliance. If the record needs a source URL, capture date, or page title, make sure those details are visible in the PDF or include them in the filename or a cover note.

Background graphics and visual fidelity
Edge includes a Background graphics option; its support page recommends enabling it when the preview differs from the intended appearance. Backgrounds may help preserve a page’s look, but they are not always needed for a readable text record. Check the preview to decide.
Use a simplified print layout only when it preserves what matters
Reader-style modes can remove navigation, ads, or other clutter, but may alter the page or omit material. Use them only if the result still contains the information your client needs, and inspect the preview before saving.

- Edge Immersive Reader: Available only on some websites. Open the page in Immersive Reader if offered, then use Print and review the result.
- Firefox Simplified format: Select it in the print interface when available. Mozilla notes that Simplified format cannot be combined with printed backgrounds.
Standard print output is generally the better choice when the page’s original visual context matters; simplified output may be easier to read when navigation and advertising interfere. Neither is universally best: compare completeness, readability, visual fidelity, and the usefulness of dates and page numbers for the particular page.

Troubleshoot common PDF problems
- Content is missing: Wait for the page to finish loading. For scroll-loaded pages, scroll through the relevant content before printing. If it is still missing, the site may not expose it to print output.
- Columns or tables are clipped: Try landscape orientation, adjust margins, or change scale. Review the preview at a readable size rather than relying on the page count.
- Pages break in awkward places: Adjust scale or margins and inspect affected pages. Web pages may have print-specific styling that differs from the screen layout.
- The printout looks unlike the site: Check the Background graphics setting in Edge, or try a simplified mode if visual fidelity is not essential. Recheck completeness after changing modes.
- There are blank or nearly blank pages: Inspect page ranges, margins, and scale in the print dialog; preview the full document before saving.
- The saved PDF is not suitable for formal records: Browser print controls do not establish compliance with a client’s retention, accessibility, authenticity, or legal requirements. Confirm the applicable standard with the client before relying on the PDF as formal evidence.
Know what the PDF does—and does not—prove
A browser-generated PDF is a practical readable record of the page as rendered for printing at that time. It is not, by itself, proof of authenticity, a certified archive, or evidence that a client’s retention and compliance requirements have been met. The required browser, operating system, naming conventions, and retention rules depend on the client; confirm them when the document has formal or regulated use.
Chrome’s chrome.pageCapture extension API saves a tab as MHTML, a package of a page and its resources; it is not a PDF export method. See the pageCapture API reference.
