URL2PNG’s documented API can capture a page when you call it, but its Quickstart does not describe a built-in recurring scheduler. To take screenshots on a cadence, run a signed URL2PNG request from an external scheduler—such as a server-side scheduled job—and save each response. If each run must show the page as it is at that time, give every request a new unique value.
How the recurring workflow works
A recurring capture is a small job with three parts: a script that signs and sends the URL2PNG request, a scheduler that runs the script, and a destination for the resulting image. URL2PNG documents the API request; choosing the scheduler, retaining files, and arranging alerts are implementation decisions outside the documented API workflow.

- Create a script that supplies your API key, target URL, and security token. The token is an MD5 hash of the full query string plus your secret key; follow URL2PNG’s Quickstart Guide for the precise signing format and request parameters.
- Store the secret key in the server or job runner’s protected configuration, not in browser-side code or routine logs. Anyone who obtains the signing secret may be able to generate valid requests.
- Set an external scheduler to invoke the script at the cadence you need. The Quickstart does not prescribe cron syntax or a particular hosting platform, so use the scheduler’s own documentation for its configuration.
- Write the response to a file or transfer it to the archive, report, or storage system your workflow uses. Decide how filenames identify the page and capture time, and how long to retain old images.
- For a fresh render each time, include a changing
uniquevalue in the request. URL2PNG suggests a timestamp for this purpose.
Before enabling a frequent schedule, run the script manually and confirm that it creates a valid image, then check that the scheduled job can access the same credentials and output path.

URL2PNG’s Quickstart documents a default screenshot TTL of 2,592,000 seconds (30 days) and identifies unique as the cache-busting parameter. It suggests using a timestamp as the value. The plans FAQ also says cached screenshots are kept for 30 days and that loading a cached screenshot does not count against the plan; each fresh screenshot requested counts as one render. - Need a new image every run: change
uniqueeach time, for example by including the current timestamp in the query string before generating the token. Ensure the token is calculated from the final full query string. - Cache reuse is acceptable: do not vary
uniqueunnecessarily. A cached response can avoid requesting a fresh render, but it may not represent the page at the scheduled run time.
Confirm the live documentation before depending on a particular default or cache behavior; service details can change.
Build the request and choose capture options
The request needs a valid API key, the target page URL, and a security token computed according to URL2PNG’s signing recipe. Since the token depends on the full query string, include all parameters—including unique when used—before signing. URL2PNG’s Quickstart Guide provides language examples and the current request details.

The documented options include viewport width and height, full-page capture, custom CSS, a delay after document readiness and asset loading, a custom user agent, accepted language, and TTL. The homepage also describes full-height captures, viewport control, user-agent and language overrides, custom CSS, and JavaScript-controlled capture timing: URL2PNG. Choose only options the recurring report needs; a long delay may increase job duration, while a viewport change can make images unsuitable for direct visual comparison.
Schedule and operate the job reliably
Choose where it runs
A developer workstation is suitable for a quick experiment, but a machine that sleeps or goes offline can miss runs. A server or managed scheduler is generally a better fit for unattended captures. Whichever you choose, verify its timezone, retry behavior, timeout limits, and whether concurrent invocations are possible; these details belong to the scheduler, not URL2PNG’s API documentation.

Make failures visible
- Write a log entry for each run with the target, start time, result, and output location. Avoid logging the secret key or complete signed query string.
- Check the process exit status and confirm the response is an image before archiving it; a successful HTTP exchange alone may not mean the desired page was captured correctly.
- Set up an alert for missed jobs or failed requests using the monitoring available in your scheduler or host.
- Prevent overlapping runs if a capture can take longer than the interval. Otherwise two jobs may overwrite the same output or consume renders unexpectedly.
Retain and name outputs intentionally
Use a filename scheme that distinguishes the page and capture time, and define a retention policy so an archive does not grow without limit. These are application-level choices; URL2PNG’s Quickstart demonstrates reading or piping an API response but does not define a recurring archive workflow.
Estimate usage and check current plans
For a rough monthly estimate, multiply the number of URLs by the scheduled runs per month, then adjust for whether each request forces a fresh capture. This is an arithmetic planning method, not a published URL2PNG usage statistic. URL2PNG says each fresh screenshot requested counts as one render and cached retrievals do not count against the plan.

The Plans page also says the named plans include full-page screenshots, custom CSS injection, no watermarks, and Fastly CDN; it describes plans as month-to-month, cancellable at any time, and says there is no free account. Troubleshoot common failures
- Request rejected or authentication fails: check that the API key and secret correspond, that the token follows the documented MD5 signing recipe, and that it was calculated after all query parameters were assembled. URL-encode the target page URL as required by the Quickstart.
- Repeated runs return the same image: the request may be using a cached capture. If the schedule requires a new render, vary
uniqueon each run and regenerate the token using the updated query string. - The job works manually but not on schedule: inspect the scheduler’s working directory, environment variables, network access, permissions, and timezone. Scheduled processes often do not inherit an interactive shell’s configuration.
- Output file is missing or invalid: confirm the script writes the response to the intended path, the job account can write there, and the response is actually an image before replacing a prior archive file.
- Captures are late or overlap: review the scheduler interval and its timeout/concurrency settings. Increase the interval or prevent overlap if a capture routinely outlasts its scheduled cadence.
- Usage is higher than expected: count fresh renders rather than all retrievals, then check whether a changing
uniquevalue is forcing a new render on every invocation. Compare that count with the current plan allowance.
