For a standard YouTube video, use a 16:9 frame; 1920×1080 is a clear default. For a Short, use a square or vertical frame. Keep thumbnail dimensions separate: YouTube recommends 16:9 thumbnails for standard videos and 9:16 thumbnails for Shorts.
What is the best aspect ratio for YouTube videos?
YouTube says the standard aspect ratio for playback on a computer is 16:9. For a conventional widescreen video, export at 1920×1080 (1080p) unless your project calls for another resolution. Aspect ratio describes the shape of the frame; resolution describes its pixel dimensions. A 1920×1080 frame is 16:9, while changing the pixel dimensions does not by itself change the shape if the ratio remains 16:9.
What aspect ratio should YouTube Shorts be?
Use a square or vertical frame for a Short. YouTube’s Shorts guidance does not establish one mandatory pixel resolution for every Short, so treat 9:16 as a common vertical canvas choice, not a required upload size.

When YouTube categorizes a video as a Short
For standard channels, YouTube says square or vertical videos up to three minutes long uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 are categorized as Shorts. The shape alone is not the complete rule: duration, upload date and channel context matter. YouTube lists a separate December 8, 2025 transition date for Official Artist Channels. Check YouTube’s current guidance on three-minute Shorts for the applicable details, and its computer upload instructions for Shorts.
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
A thumbnail is a separate image asset, not the video frame. YouTube recommends 16:9 for standard video thumbnails and 9:16 for Shorts thumbnails. Its suggested thumbnail resolutions are 3840×2160 for standard videos and 2160×3840 for Shorts. Those recommendations apply to thumbnails, not to video uploads. How YouTube displays square and vertical video
The YouTube player adapts to the uploaded video’s shape and the viewer’s device. YouTube advises against adding black bars or padding directly to the video to force it into another shape. On Android, the player adapts to vertical, square and horizontal video; its portrait player becomes taller for square and vertical footage and shorter for widescreen footage. Choose the canvas before you export
- Choose where the video is meant to appear. Use 16:9 for a standard widescreen upload; use square or vertical framing when making a video intended to qualify as a Short.
- Set the canvas to match the footage. For standard widescreen, 1920×1080 is a practical default. For Shorts, choose square or vertical framing without treating any one pixel size as a universal YouTube requirement.
- Check framing at the edges. Reframe the subject for the chosen orientation rather than adding black bars or padding to the video.
- Export the thumbnail separately. Use the applicable thumbnail ratio and suggested resolution, not the video’s dimensions by default.
Aspect ratio is only one export decision. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations separately cover encoding settings, including frame rate and bitrate; those settings do not determine the canvas shape.
