Cloudinary’s documented URL2PNG workflow can capture a webpage when its screenshot delivery URL is requested, but the reviewed documentation does not describe a built-in recurring scheduler. To take screenshots on a cadence, have an external scheduled job request a signed URL; Cloudinary then handles the documented screenshot and image-delivery workflow. First confirm that URL2PNG is currently available for your account and check its current requirements.
Can Cloudinary take website screenshots automatically on a schedule?
Cloudinary documents URL2PNG as a way to generate a screenshot of a remote webpage through a delivery URL. The screenshot generation is synchronous. The CLI documentation lists url2png as a delivery type and notes that the derived asset is not generated until its URL is opened. In other words, constructing or storing the URL is not a capture event: a scheduled process must make the request.
The sources reviewed do not document a recurring screenshot scheduler built into Cloudinary. Treat the schedule as a separate application or infrastructure task, not as a Cloudinary capability.
How to schedule recurring website screenshots with Cloudinary
- Check URL2PNG availability. Before building around it, confirm that your account can use the add-on and establish any current plan or add-on requirements. The detailed Cloudinary how-to is older, and current commercial terms have not been verified here.
- Build the screenshot URL on a trusted server. Use Cloudinary’s authenticated API or sign the dynamic delivery URL. Keep the API secret out of browser code and limit which target URLs your application will sign. See Cloudinary’s service overview for its API and delivery URL patterns.
- Choose an external scheduler. Configure cron, a hosted scheduler, or an application job for the cadence you need. These are orchestration choices; they are not presented here as Cloudinary features. Compare candidates for interval and timezone controls, retries, secure secret storage, execution limits, monitoring, and cost.
- Make the scheduled task open the URL. The task must actually request the signed screenshot URL. Since capture is triggered when the URL is opened, generating the URL in advance without requesting it will not create the derived screenshot asset.
- Decide how captures should be named and retained. Choose a stable asset naming or versioning scheme, and decide whether each run should preserve a distinct capture or replace a stable asset. The reviewed documentation does not prescribe a recurring-capture naming or retention policy, so align this choice with your comparison, audit, and storage needs.
- Use transformations and delivery separately from scheduling. Cloudinary documents image transformations such as resizing and cropping, plus CDN delivery; SDK helpers can build URLs and image tags. These features affect how a captured image is transformed or served, not when a new screenshot is requested. See Cloudinary image transformations.
- Monitor the scheduled job. Record request outcomes and alert on failures or unexpected page changes in the external runner. The sources do not establish performance or reliability figures for this setup, so validate its behavior against your own target pages and schedule.
Keep signing and target selection secure
A signed URL or authenticated request helps restrict screenshot generation to requests authorized by your Cloudinary account. Generate signatures only in a trusted backend, protect the API secret, and allowlist or otherwise validate the target URLs your application will capture. Do not expose a signing secret in client-side JavaScript. The cited Cloudinary material supports signing and authentication as controls; it does not define a complete security design for every scheduler or application.

Common problems and fixes
- The URL exists, but no screenshot appears: Make sure the scheduled task requests the delivery URL. Creating the URL alone does not trigger derived-asset generation.
- The URL2PNG delivery type or add-on is unavailable: Confirm current account availability and plan or add-on requirements with Cloudinary before relying on this workflow.
- A request is rejected: Check that the URL is signed or authenticated as required and that the signing code uses the correct server-side credentials. Never move the API secret into browser code.
- Captures overwrite one another or are hard to find: Review the asset naming and versioning scheme, and decide explicitly whether each run should be retained or replace an existing asset.
- The image is the wrong size or crop: Check the transformation and delivery URL separately from the scheduler. Image transformations change the delivered asset; they do not initiate a new capture.
- A scheduled run fails intermittently: Inspect the external job runner’s logs and retry behavior, then validate its cadence, timezone, execution limits, and monitoring. No universal reliability or latency result is established for this workflow.
