A saved screenshot archive alone does not detect changes or notify anyone—you must configure comparison and an alert path for monitoring.
Decide what the daily check should do
Before adding a schedule, decide what you need to learn from each run. A dated collection of images is useful for visual history, but it requires someone to inspect the images. A visual check compares new captures with a reference and can fail when the page changes; notification still needs to be connected to the failure.

- List the URLs, viewport sizes, and any interaction state that matters, such as a page after signing in or opening a menu.
- Choose viewport-only or full-page capture. Full-page images are useful for long pages, but can make comparisons sensitive to content that moves or loads lower down.
- Decide which differences matter. Dynamic ads, timestamps, rotating content, and embedded widgets may create noise unrelated to the design change you want to catch.
- Choose where images and baselines will live, how long to keep dated captures, and who should review failures. Retention and notification are operational choices, not automatic consequences of taking a screenshot.
Build a Playwright visual check
Playwright Test can capture a page and compare it with a reference image using expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The first run generates the baseline; later runs compare against it. Review any proposed baseline update before accepting it, so a real regression is not silently recorded as the new expected appearance.

Install and create the test
In a Node.js project, install Playwright Test and its browser, then create tests/homepage.spec.js:

To capture a specific state, add the necessary actions before the assertion—for example, click a navigation control or authenticate using a test account. Avoid putting real credentials directly in source code; supply them through your CI platform’s secrets and use the site’s intended test environment.
Create and review the baseline
- Run
npx playwright test. On the first run, Playwright writes a reference screenshot rather than reporting a comparison against an existing one. - Inspect the generated baseline and commit it with the test only if it represents the appearance you intend to protect.
- Run the test again after a code or page change. A visual difference causes the assertion to fail and produces comparison artifacts for review.
- When a change is intentional, inspect it and update the baseline deliberately with
npx playwright test --update-snapshots. Review and commit the resulting image change rather than treating every failure as acceptable.
Schedule the test daily with GitHub Actions
GitHub Actions workflows use five-field cron expressions: minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. The expression 17 5 * * * requests a run each day at 05:17 UTC. GitHub also supports timezone-aware schedules using IANA timezone strings; check its current workflow syntax before relying on a local-time schedule.

This example installs Chromium and uploads available test results, but it does not create a long-term image archive or send a separate alert. Add an alerting step or connect the workflow’s failure state to the notification system your team uses. GitHub Actions artifacts have their own retention settings; set an explicit retention policy if those files are your intended history.
Scheduled workflows must be on the repository’s default branch, and scheduled runs use that branch’s latest commit. GitHub notes that high load can delay a run and, in sufficiently busy periods, cause a scheduled job to be dropped. The start of an hour is especially busy, so a nonzero minute such as 17 is a sensible choice, not a guarantee that the job will begin at exactly that time. In public repositories, GitHub automatically disables scheduled workflows after 60 days without repository activity. The shortest supported schedule interval is five minutes, so daily checks are within the supported cadence. See GitHub’s schedule event documentation for the current behavior and syntax.

Screenshot comparison is meaningful only when the capture environment is sufficiently consistent. Playwright’s documentation warns that rendering can vary with host operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Use the same operating system and browser setup for baseline creation and scheduled runs where possible.

Handle changing page content intentionally
If a known volatile region is outside the purpose of the check, hide it with a test stylesheet rather than broadly accepting differences. For example, to hide an embedded frame during screenshots:

In tests/screenshot.css, add a narrowly scoped rule such as iframe { visibility: hidden !important; } only if hiding every frame is appropriate for this page. A targeted selector is safer when only one region is dynamic. Hiding content changes what the test can detect, so keep the stylesheet aligned with the purpose of the check.
Set a difference allowance carefully
Playwright supports comparison configuration such as maxDiffPixels. An allowance can prevent tiny rendering variations from failing every run, but a larger allowance can also let meaningful changes pass. Start with strict comparisons in a stable environment, inspect actual diffs, and adjust only when the tolerated variation is understood. Neither a threshold nor a hidden region guarantees that false positives disappear.

Archive-only captures versus change monitoring

The official Playwright and GitHub documentation explains capture, comparison, and scheduling primitives; it does not prescribe a specific notification service or retention policy. Choose those based on how quickly someone needs to act and how much image history the team needs.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The test fails on the first run: Confirm that the baseline was created and committed in the same test configuration. The first assertion generates the reference; subsequent runs need that file to compare against.
- It passes locally but fails in CI: Compare the browser, operating system, headless configuration, fonts, and viewport between environments. Differences in these conditions can alter rendering. Generate and review the baseline in the same environment used by the scheduled workflow.
- Every run reports a small difference: Inspect the diff for dynamic text, animations, rotating content, or embedded regions. Stabilize the page or hide only the irrelevant area; consider a small pixel allowance only after verifying what it would ignore.
- The screenshot is incomplete or blank: Check the URL, authentication, and navigation outcome, then wait for the page state that the test actually needs.
networkidlemay not be suitable for pages with persistent network activity; waiting for a specific selector can be more reliable. - The daily run does not start on time: Treat cron as a requested schedule, not an exact-time guarantee. Check the Actions run history, workflow branch, and repository activity; consider a nonzero minute and retain a manual dispatch trigger for validation.
- The workflow starts but cannot install or run the browser: Verify the Node version, lockfile, Playwright package, and browser installation step. Keep CI dependencies reproducible and inspect the job log for the failing command.
- A changed page is not noticed by anyone: Confirm that the assertion’s failure reaches an alert path and that the team reviews it. Uploading artifacts alone does not notify a person or define a response process.
