To analyze Wowza Streaming Engine logs in Sawmill, enable Wowza’s serverStats appender, locate the resulting wowzastreamingengine_stats.log, then import it using Sawmill’s Wowza plug-in. The configuration differs by Engine version: Wowza’s Log4j 2 procedure applies to 4.8.8.01 and later; its legacy Log4j 1.x procedure covers 4.8.5 and earlier.
1. Check your Wowza Streaming Engine version
Before editing logging configuration, confirm the Engine version and follow the procedure intended for it. Wowza says Log4j 2 is available in Streaming Engine 4.8.8.01 and later; earlier releases use Log4j 1.x. Its current analysis setup instructions apply to 4.8.8.01 and later, while the legacy setup page covers 4.8.5 and earlier. The reviewed instructions do not explain versions 4.8.6 through 4.8.8.00 in detail, so check the documentation shipped for your exact version before changing a production server’s logging configuration.

2. Enable the statistics log
Wowza Streaming Engine 4.8.8.01 and later
- Open
[install-dir]/conf/log4j2-config.xml. - Within the Root logger, enable the appender references Wowza documents:
stdout,serverAccess,serverError,serverStats,vhostAccess, andvhostError. - Use the levels in Wowza’s example as a reference:
infofor stdout, access, and stats appenders;warnfor error appenders. Follow the file’s existing XML structure and the instructions for your version rather than pasting a different version’s configuration.
Wowza’s Log4j 2 setup instructions identify wowzastreamingengine_stats.log as the best log file for analysis tools.

Wowza Streaming Engine 4.8.5 and earlier
- Open
[install-dir]/conf/log4j.properties. - Add
serverStatsto thelog4j.rootCategoryappender list. Wowza’s example islog4j.rootCategory=INFO, stdout, serverAccess, serverError, serverStats.
Use Wowza’s legacy instructions for this Log4j 1.x procedure; do not apply it to a Log4j 2 configuration.
3. Find the right log file
Engine logs are normally under [install-dir]/logs. The statistics file to import is wowzastreamingengine_stats.log. Wowza Manager logs are separate and normally reside under [install-dir]/manager/logs; do not substitute those for the Engine log when following this workflow. Wowza describes the statistics file as its best choice for analysis tools, not as the only log available.

For large files or complex searches, work from a downloaded log or access it in the installation directories. Wowza says Manager’s Logs tool is best suited to small files and simple strings; for files several megabytes or more, or more complex searches, download or access the logs directly. 4. Import the file into Sawmill
- Open Sawmill and select its Wowza Streaming Engine/Wowza Media Server log format or plug-in for the import.
- Choose the generated
wowzastreamingengine_stats.logfile and run the import. - Review the parsed fields before building reports. If your logging configuration or format is customized, test with a representative log file and confirm that important fields are recognized.
Sawmill lists a Wowza Media Systems Wowza Media Server log analyzer plug-in and describes parsing, importing, aggregation, and dynamically filtered reporting. Its supported log formats page notes that custom formats are possible. The reviewed product information does not provide a version-by-version compatibility matrix, so confirm compatibility with your Sawmill release and any customized Wowza format rather than assuming every configuration parses identically.

5. Choose reports based on fields actually present
Wowza documents fields such as c-client-id, c-ip, c-proto, c-referrer, c-user-agent, cs-bytes, cs-stream-bytes, x-stream-id, x-suri, and x-vhost. The appender selection and configured fields determine what is actually written, so verify the imported data before drawing conclusions.

Sawmill’s filtering and aggregation can help organize these questions, but a report can only answer them to the extent the relevant fields were logged, retained, and parsed correctly.
